Astora's Straight Sword is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.

Straight sword of an unknown knight, likely one of Astora's superiors."
"High-quality weapon with a powerful blessing."

How to Get / Where to Find the Astora's Straight Sword

  • Can be found in front of the Undead Dragon in the Valley of Drakes.
  • Can be acquired very early if you have the Master Key. Go to New Londo Ruins from Firelink Shrine, then head right to the Valley of Drakes and use the Master Key to unlock the gate. This allows you to get to the sword immediately after arriving at Firelink Shrine. The Undead Dragon will wake up (so expect a fight) when the sword is picked up, it is the item on the left out of the two items.
  • Since the Undead Dragon can one hit kill a low level character, try to be fast and at least pick up the sword before dying. The item on the right out of the two items is the Dragon Crest Shield which is also a good item. You can pick up both items before the Undead Dragon attacks if you are fast enough. You can pick the sword up without waking the dragon but not the shield.
  • Video Location Timestamp 1:16

Hints and Tips:

  • Can be given to Kingseeker Frampt to receive 100 Souls.
  • Astora's Straight Sword can be upgraded by using Twinkling Titanite.
  • This sword is an excellent early game weapon if you have the required 14 Faith to wield it, as it can be acquired earlier than the Drake Sword and does comparable damage, and is much cheaper to upgrade. It does 160 base damage, half physical and half magical and also scales with stats. It also counts as a Divine weapon and is excellent for exploring the Catacombs early, before you even unlock the Divine Ember. The stat scaling is rank C and is not that good, but the base damage on the sword makes up for it.

You can get this weapon to +5 very quickly if you want and with 250+- damage and divine on top its quite useful and its simple straight sword so its fast, light and doesnt eat too much stamina.

You can get 1+1+2 Twinkling from Snuggly if you bring each type of anti-debuff food (poison/bleed/toxic)
      Then its just crystal lizards:
One in undead burg on your way to taurus demon boss.
One if you go up the hill to darkroot from Havels tower.
Two can be found in Catacombs after falling through floor, its after you find those rotating bridges. (Its after the bridge with 1 necromancer and 2 skeletons)

Each bug drops 2x titanite, the most difficult part is getting 10k souls this early. If you want extra cheese you can just drop down into catacombs in the bonewheel zone there is Leroy summon sign and he can oneshot Pinwheel for you, Pinwheel is worth 15k souls, just bone out after this, you can get 5x homeward bone under the lift leading to Gargoyles.
Its just running and master key and maxed out weapon is ready within max 30 minutes.

I like to use this sword alongside the shield and the elite knight set. In my last playthough I used it even at Anor londo, and defeated Ornstein & Smough with it (Super Ornstein too). It's an okay weapon if you have experience with these games, and it becames strong if you get 40 on the required stats. If you go to max everything there's plenty of better options.

Very nice early weapon, but a Divine Zweihander is more accessible without Master Key, and cleans out the catacombs with ease.

          • Anonymous

Like the Drake Sword it is a noob trap. Destroys everything up to Capra but then falls off rapidly. An Astora's SS +5 gets outperformed by a divine Longsword +10 everytime regardless of stats.

            Only use it
1.) if you want to go to the catacombs early and are too lazy to farm for green shards,
2.) if you're new to Dark Souls and having trouble in the early game or
3.) if you're going for a Faith build anyways and looking for a starter weapon.

Deals 227 physical and 173 magic damage with 20% damage bonus against skeletons on character with 50 in Str/Dex/Fai.

Divine Claymore deals 242 physical and 361 magic damage with 10% damage bonus against skeletons on same character.

So unless you are straight sword addict picking Claymore or Bastard Sword and making it divine is much better option.

Since basic damage of this sword looks a bit crappy it is usually considered as early weapon for faith characters (divine longsword or any other similiar weapon performs much better for faith path). BUT! True power of this sword lies in it's scalling. Having C in three stats makes it quite strong weapon once all of them are risen to 40 and outclasses in damage any straight sword on divine or occult path.

If you want to use this weapon for the entire run, good luck. Being unbuffable, having expensive upgrades and not so good scaling, make using this weapon a challenge.

So I went with a dex/faith build and took the master key. Ran the back way through New Londo and then up through the basin to Andre, as you do. Picked up the ASS to use as an early weap because dex, and I hate the whiff on the mace/club.

Got early twinkly from crystal Lizzie's and moss drops with Snuggly. Took it to+4 before heading to the bell gargoyles.

Bummed them hard, then the Capra demon, then Pinwheel.

Got a Balder swag sword (2 actually), one is at +5 for later scaling, after I get the large ember from Blighty.

This weapon is boss early on for a faith build. Kinda comparable to blitzing the catacombs to get a fire weapon first thing, or grabbing the drake sword.

It's a lot easier to upgrade though.

Great early game weapon for clerics, especially if you use the master key to get it ASAP. It make getting the RoK a joke and even gets you to sens' reliably. But that's where it starts falling behind the curve. You can push it to O&S without suffering to much, but after that the triple C scaling starts showing like a tire that's been leaking. Even early on there are devine infused weapons-- namely longsword-- that are directly better, though that shouldn't stop you from using it as an early to mid game weapon if it catches your fancy.

                      • Anonymous

I personally found more use out of a divine longsword but i never upgraded this, so i think if you put some time into it (and level faith) it could be good.

                        • Anonymous

I feel like everyone in these comments tried using this on a dex/str build and then was confused by why it sucked. lol Learn how scaling works before you post, this thing wants dex, str and faith, if you don't have that then obviously it's gonna suck. Sure, it's gonna require more levels, but so do many weapons in this game, not everything is meant to be used at SL100 or lower. Dragonslayer Spear and Crescent Axe both compliment this weapon very well.

                          • Anonymous

maybe this weapon would actually be good after catacombs if it had any ****in scaling increases. should up to at least a high b, or maybe low b phys and a fth

                            • Anonymous

Sword with neat model like this and cool sheath had to be an early game weapon that quickly gets realy bad. Meanwhile the FIRST STEPS of the blender user known as Balder Side Sword is a god tier straight sword. This must be a joke.

this would get my vote for worst weapon in the game, the only thing that could be worse would be maybe a dagger or something. its impressive that a weapon which upgrades with twinkling titanite can be this bad, since normally thats a good thing, this is basically a shitty black knight weapon that you can always get guaranteed, but thats also very bad, you get what you pay for i guess.

It's a great weapon to challenge yourself when you git gud and find the game too easy with the better options.

This thing served me quite well up to Sen's Fortress. Especially great for clearing out the Catacombs.
Sure, there's eventually going to be better Divine weapons out there, but this thing performed when I needed it to right out of the box, and it only cost me 1 DEX and some abundant, easily farmed upgrade materials.

****.. I wasted all my Twinkies on this and it doesn't seem very good. The only good thing is the lightning staggers and I look like a professional knight of the round table. At least it's fast I guess?

                                      • Anonymous

Good weapon until you can get hands on better faith scalling weapons like the Crescent Axe, also not worth it to waste the twinkling titanites on this

                                        • Anonymous

Seems like a cruel joke seeing how useless this weapon is. You have to dedicate your entire build around this weapon for it to be of any use, and even then it loses any semblance of usefulness once you're maybe 1/3 of the way into the game.

                                          • Anonymous

You can upgrade this weapon pretty fast once you first get it (there's a few guides on Youtube and such) so it isn't too bad for early game. Solid pick for the Catacombs due to innate divine dmg, for anyone who didn't already know this lol.

                                            • Anonymous

It's great for when you get it + a fast, versatile split damage weapon for quality builds. There are plenty of straight swords that scale enough to use for endgame, at least it isn't a joke weapon like in DS3.

                                              • Anonymous

damage it is not that much difference from divine long +10. but i with it was generic like the sunlight straight sword.

                                                • Anonymous

The worst straight sword in the game. And probably the most disappointing weapon overall. You need 3 stats to max out damage and even in this case simple straight sword with the same stats has better pure physical AR. It's not even available early game if you go through game in legit way without master key.
And the worst part it that it looks pretty good. Why can't they make something like big wooden stick a garbage and good looking weapon a good end game gear

                                                  • Anonymous

                                                    If you like swords:

Nice for dex builds. Works well until S&O boss.
Move to Silver Knight Sword after this. Spear is good too.
If you don't have 14 faith, well, i'm using the schimitar. It has got low damage but best est moveset.

                                                    • Anonymous

This weapon makes fast work of the Capra Demon, +5 it’s also a great substitute to the BKH early game for Faith builds, is quickly out preformed by a Divine longsword+10.

                                                      • Anonymous

"You can pick the sword up without waking the dragon but not the shield." Is just flat put wrong. Only picking up the soul keeps the dragon asleep, he wakes up immediately if you even stand near either weapon.

                                                        • Anonymous

Got it for the Oscar cosplay playthrough. Surprised at the early game damage! Hope this carries over, even a little, to late game when I've upgraded it and my stats.

                                                          • Anonymous

An excellent choice for an early faith build. Given the few damaging miracles in the game, this gives you a good offensive option until you can make a divine weapon yourself.

                                                            • Anonymous

Ah okay this is Anri's sword. Or, Anri's sword is this sword oh, i got it. Yeah, this is actually a sweet sword, I always get it, even if I move on from it later. Get this sword, take the 14 FTH you'll get access to a heal spell as well. Survive. I dunno, though, coz you can get that Zweihander at the bottom of the hill at the beginning, and you could put those points into STR, get a bigger sword. so what do you want? big sword or magic sword? I like magic sword, but maybe that naked guy over there likes big sword whatever floats your boat i guess. Praise the sun.

I stepped on this on randomly while trying to figure it out where to go in my first playthrough
Looked cool so I decided to use it, but I saw that magical damage and thought it would scale off Int...God, I was a dumbass

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

You may find the Astora Straight Sword worth the 14 Faith, because it cuts early enemies like butter. You can get I think two twinkling titanite after the Grass Crest Shield on the way to Andre and three from the top of the tower Havel is in.

                                                                        • Anonymous

No matter how I run the stats on this weapon, the stats are just bad in the long run compared to any other straight swords with or without a divine buff. Why is one of the most iconic weapons in the game so trash lol? I wish they would've buffed it a little in the remaster. Doesn't even have to beat the Balder Side Sword or any of the other straight swords, just needs to be made into a more viable weapon for endgame PvE usage.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

Fantastic weapon for cleric/sunbro builds early on, perhaps one of the best weapons you can pick up before heading to undead burg (assuming you took Master Key). Falls off sharply once you start encountering enemies with higher resistances, but if you upgrade it, it can last you through til the end of Sen's. By then, you should have acquired a normal weapon like the claymore and have decent stats for it, so you can buff it with Sunlight Blade.

But for early game faith builds, this thing is even better than the drake sword.

                                                                              • Anonymous
