How to Get / Where to Find the Crystal Ring Shield

Notes:

  • Has the highest magic resistance in the game, tied with Havel's Greatshield.
  • Special: L2 or R2 Attack (depending on which hand holds the shield) sends out a vertical magic disc that strikes enemies at range.
  • The special attack uses 4 durability points and ignores the East Wood Grain Ring.
  • This shield can be repaired. Do not mistake this for crystal equipment. It has crystal in its name but it is NOT crystal equipment.

One of the best looking shields in the game, but both of its gimmicks are pretty useless and don't make up for the stats it lacks. It can't parry, and the ranged attack that replaces the parry doesn't have any scaling at all and caps at 150 magic damage, which is low even for the earliest point you can acquire it. It has low stability that can't be increased, but high weight for a small shield. It has okay resistances aside from magic, etc. For the same weight you can use the Crest Shield which, even though it has 10% less magic damage reduction and lower fire damage reduction, it has high stability and 100% physical reduction which more than makes up for it.

If you are unironically using this shield outside of blocking a magic casting enemy/ player, you deserve to go hollow...

Titanite catch pole is far better int weapon than this, -42 magic damage at 40 int but +226 physical at min requirements, has halberd moveset and you can get it really early on, the downside is that it is a very rare drop

Ok, look, it's not entirely bad. It's a small shield, it's got very high magic defense, and it's lighter than some of your other options. But it can't parry, doesn't have great defenses other than magic, and has less stability than most other shields you'll be using, so you can't even safely block the strong magic attacks from the likes of the Four Kings. The crystal ring attack is cool, but it doesn't do much damage, it's range sucks, it chews through durability, and if you're not locked on you'll never hit. Just use the Crest Shield, don't bother with this thing. It's not worth it.

Been using this for about 2/3 of my first playthrough through DS. Despite the range attack I don't think it's really worth it. Bed of Chaos really kicked this shield's ass and I changed it and I'm not gonna change it back

Honestly this shield is the only reason I defeated o&s in the original release. Saw it in the strategy guide. Thank you Dark Souls

Wow, a small shield with no parry... Honestly a parrying tool that doubled as a magic null would be sick, but they just had to ruin it.

Bad shield? Yes. But it's not completely useless. It has the highest Magic reduction stat, on tie with Havel's Greatshield but without its parameter requirement.

Why are people talking badly about this shield? At least in PVE against Four Kings, Nito, Moonlight Butterfly and Demon Firesage is very useful against magic attacks.

                      • This shield is really awful. The damage is bad, the blocking is bad, and you have to use the Moonlight Butterfly soul to even get it. If you want a high magic resist shield, use the Crest Shield.

Even tho people already talked about the patch of the shield, here's my overall opinion on this shield. Back in the days in DS1,pre patch of this shield is absolute top tier. Capable of taking down bosses that are weak to magic and deals a crazy amount of damage (depending how powerful your weapon in your right hand is). It also takes the advantage to block magic attacks with ease having a magic reduction of 90%. However when fromsoft realized the shield is to powerful. So they patch this thing to hell. This really makes this shield a god to absolute butt cheeks(not a sexy kind of butt you see. A butt crack). The thing that makes this shield useless is how low the damage is. In times you,re trying interested stuff. But in other times you,re trying to get yourself killed by a boss who is resist to magic or was aggressive. If you want to get a magic based shield, use the crest shield.

I remember using this shield back in the days. Unfortunately it got patched. It used to be one of the best shields in the game but since that patch it's not horrible. Unless you block magic it doesn't got other uses. Ashamed.

I forgot this thing even existed. Back during those first few months before it got patched to hell, it would hit like a truck and trivialize most bosses. I can understand why they'd want to nerf it, but they basically made it useless, which is a shame because it's the only thing in the series, weapon or shield, that even has a move like that.

I think this should would be fine if it had better stability, but no worries really, you can just use repair spell and you should be good

Fashion souls, true end game. That shield, the crystal catalyst, moonlight greatsword and the channeller set.

Situational is a good word for it.
                                      General shield? Nah
                                      Magic shield? Yeeh
Practically free projectile on moderate range? Yeeeh
A potential middle finger in the faces of Dark Bead spammers when they unload on your shield and have Karmic Justice blow their faces off?
...Yes, but don't let them know that.

it is a shame the remaster didn't re-balance the shield by adding a smidgeon of stat scaling. a c in intelligence even would have made it stay relavent during later game/new game +'s. As it is, the shield is just good for a few bits of chip damage at a moderate range. Or maybe pulling enemies if you're careful.
