Dark Wood Grain Ring

This special ring crafted in an Eastern land is made of gold, but with a wood grain crest
on its surface. Agents of subterfuge in this faraway land are particularly fond of the
dark gold wood grain, which greatly alters its wearer's rolling action.

Dark Wood Grain Ring is a Ring in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. Players can equip up to 2 Rings, but equipping two of the same item is not possible.

 Effect

  • Changes your dodge/roll to a faster cartwheel-esque flip that covers more ground, but only when you're at 25% or less of your total equip load.(patch 1.06). Increases invulnerability frames from 12 frames to 14 frames; character recovers from roll faster from 12 frames to 8 frames. While flipping across lava you take (roughly) half as much damage from lava as you would when you would run.

Notes

  • You need to join the Forest Hunter covenant for the ninja bodyguard to appear.
  • Attacking the bodyguard breaks the Forest Hunter covenant. This includes kicking him off of the ledge that he stands near.
  • If the bodyguard dies and for some reason you don't get to pick up his soul, quit and reload game and his soul should appear directly behind the building Alvina waits in. Of course, if you kill him in Blighttown and are unable to pickup, you will find his soul where he was standing in that area, behind the little wall in the poison swamp.
  •  After killing the bodyguard only, you can absolve your sins, rejoin the clan and still buy weapons from Shiva.
  • Rolling the right way over the corpses of lighter enemies while wearing this ring allows you to launch your enemies’ corpses into the air and down cliffs, which is a good way to relieve yourself from the boredom of farming.

Some people are mad cause this ring requires to be under 25% equip load so you can't use it with FaP an Havel at the same time. But why would you? The point of using this ring is NOT GETTING HIT so why wear it with heavy armor?

And yes you can make flipping havel with high enough endurance so I don't see where problem is.

        Love that last note.

Ok so let's take a moment and talk about Dark Souls and how to Git Gut. DS is one of the games that sticks to category "easy to learn but hard to master". It's easy to learn basic mechanics of gameplay but how to utilize them and when... That's something completely different.

There are many cool and great armors or shields and poise is considered to be OP. Just get the heavy armor with big defences and poise and spam attack using some big weapon that breaks enemy poise. EZ win. That's how Giant Dad works or any Havel + Big Bonk setup. Most of the time it works great on PvE and even on PvP is quite good. But is it a top? Is it a peak of mastery you can achiev?

No. If you go far beyond NG+ you will learn that at some point bosses will start to kill you in 1-2 hits no matter how good your armor is or how many health you have. And let's be honest. Taking no hit at all is in 99% better option than tanking it on armor or blocking via shield. There are many ways to avoid damage. Attacking from distance using spear or ranged attacks and moving is ok. But it won't save you from fast attacks that cover large area. So at some point you will realize that rolling at right moment and direction is the only 100% safe way to avoid damage.

And this is the secret of ancient masters. You don't need vitality, poise, armor or shield at all to survive and avoid damage. As long as you keep rolling correctly at right time you are technically immune to any damage. And this is the place where Dark Wood Grain Ring comes in. With it you can roll faster, cover larger area and get bigger immunity window.

But that's not all. There's mechanic we can call "Instability Damage". Do not confuse it with Counter Damage cause that's something different. Instability damage gives stable 40% damage boost to ANY attack that hits target that is somehow unstable. There are some situations when this works and one of them is rolling. If you manage to hit rolling target when he's not protected by immunity time window there will be green flash of light added to blood splash (counter hit have white flash). And this hit will deal 40% more damage and it's not affected by Leo Ring. Probably you were hit by it many times when you wrongly timed your roll during boss fight and you were hit really hard. It works best with medium and fat rolls but fast roller can also be hit that way. But not with this ring. When you use DWGR you are already hard to hit during ninja flip roll at all but it is still possible. But even if you are hit no damage bonus will apply. You are immune to additional 40% damage boost if you get hit during ninja flip roll and you will take normal damage instead.

So this is the true way how too Git Gut. Bleed, high poise damage or OP spells/weapon buffs won't help your enemies if they can't hit you. And if they can't hit you don't need high health, big poise or protection. Mobility > any armor or shield. So next time consider dumping Havel's Ring and your heavy armor to pockets and wear DWGR with less than 25% equip load instead.

Backstep gains Invicibility frame with this ring(100% confirmed)! Maybe backsteps always have i-frames but they are so small that it rarely works. I have tested backsteps without the ring and i-frames consistently work against the magic npc' projectiles in firelink.

I nearly missed the body guard entirely by the windmill. Be sure to walk around thoroughly if you see the merchant but not the ninja garb wearing and partially see-through body guard.

I'm working on getting this to work with Havel's set. I've got to be a level 89 Bandit with every level in endurance. I went past the hydra way to save souls for getting the Cat Covenant. I should have pushed the ninja off the cliff. Instead I went to BT and died trying attack him. Beat a couple of bosses and was able to get absolved and get the forest key (pro tip: in dsRM, after being absolved I could have rejoined at any bonfire). Talk to the cat, enter the Covenant, notice Shiva isn't by the cat, rest at Parish, run all the way down to the bottom of Blighttown. I kill the ninja and immediately quit out in case I want to buy stuff from Shiva later. When I open the game I'm at the Depths's Blighttown entrance and human. I bone back to Parish and the fire is unlit and unkindled (haven't checked other bonfires). But I ran back down and the ring was there. And that's my Dark Wood Grain Ring story.

Walk towards a wall while kicking a corpse towards it, when the corpse is as clamped as possible between you and the wall do a backflip!

The iframes thing isn't precise enough, since your frames depend on the equip load you have, being different for 0%-8.3%, 8.3%-16.6%, and 16.6% to 24.9%, each one of these equip loads decreasing the recovery frames by 1, and no, you can't ninjaflip with 25%

One niche upside to this ring is that it makes your backstep look the same as a backwards roll, allowing you to potentially catch a PvP opponent off guard with a backstep attack.

I fought the Ninja at an early point in the game, got killed and he wont spawn back. Is there anyway I could still get the ring?

I don’t understand, I’ve used the cragspider method in the past with no issues but this time it just get hitting shiva with the flame more often than the bodyguard even though I kept the exact same positioning where I stand right in front of the ninja and block the flame breath so it chip damages me but fully damages him. I had to reload twice and even with those 3 attempts it still kept damaging shiva even though it didn’t at all in past successful attempts and eventually he died before the ninja did. I’m not trying that again on future runs

It's so obscure, how could anyone who has not looked at the wiki decide, "oh i'm just going to kill that transparent ninja dude behind the merchant that belongs to the covenant i just joined"

For whatever reason, the ring stops functioningwhen the player is in water making it useless in certain cases, most notably the sanctuary guardian fight.

Funny how at some point game breaking item with 1 patch was turned into novelty item. I still remember ninja flipping havel monsters with BK weapons.

FYI I just tried the Cragspider trick (get the Cragspider to kill the ninja) and it still aggro'd Shiva, but only after the ninja died. Could be because I attacked the Cragspider back? In any case, proceed with caution.

If you max out Endurance, wear this ring and Havel's, you can use the entire Havel set and still ninja flip. you can only use a few weapons with the space left (shortsword brings it up to 24.9%)
