Great Lord Greatsword is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.
"Greatsword born from the soul of Gwyn, Lord of Cinder."
"As bearer of the ultimate soul, Gwyn wielded the bolts of the sun, but before linking the fire, divided that power amongst his children, and set off with only this greatsword as his companion."
Acquired from:
- Ascension with the Soul of Gwyn, Lord of Cinder and a +10 upgraded Dagger/ Straight Sword/ Great Sword.
- Compatible swords: Dagger, Parrying Dagger, Bandit's Knife, Shortsword, Longsword, Broadsword, Balder Side Sword, Sunlight Straight Sword, Barbed Straight Sword, Darksword, Bastard Sword, Claymore, Man-serpent Greatsword, Flamberge, Zweihander, Greatsword, Demon Great Machete, Straight Sword Hilt.
Hints and Tips:
- Can be given to Kingseeker Frampt to receive 10,000 Souls.
- Great Lord Greatsword can be upgraded by using Demon Titanite.
- This sword can be obtained starting from the second playthrough, since the game will finish after the defeat of Gwyn.
- This weapon does not receive the same flame ability as the variant Gwyn uses in the boss fight. There was a misconception that forging the sword gives it a fire attack like Quelaag's Furysword, but after many players have tried, the sword shows no fire animation or fire damage.

No matter how disapointed you are about the fire being absent you just have to admit that this is one of the coolest looking swords in the series
- Anonymous
The reason there’s no fire damage is because the fire is in Gwyn himself and he projects that upon his blade. And technically it’s a boss weapon so you can’t buff it, I think they really should have made that exception here because otherwise there’s nothing special about it.

sword would have been really nice if we could have like...put fire on it. But noooo, like santus, that power is in another castle...

I don't think this weapon is bad personally, by all accounts it's actually a pretty good greatsword, but the problem I have with it is that it's just so... Boring, for a legendary greatsword crafted from the soul of Gwyn himself even if he was far past his prime it's just so unremarkable, at best it's just a moderately better Black Knight Sword and the only real unique trait it has going for it other than high base damage to compensate for the poor scaling is the R2 attack that deals high enough poise damage to pancake most average-sized foes but even that kinda sucks anyway because it's very slow in comparison to other Greatsword R2 attacks and has mediocre at best range making it nearly useless most of the time anyway
I mean... At least it looks nice, but it's really disappointing honestly, I legit would've been content with it even if it just acted like a bigger Quelaag's Furysword, I just wanted a cool fiery greatsword man was that really too much to ask for?

Avarage greatsword, there for exists obsidian one which can be ascended ig and used items like gold resin on it too,so at this point mfs didnt even care about anything special, sunlight spears worth better but this sword is for the trophy so,a slightly better version of black knight sword
- Anonymous
It has decent basic damage and that's all about it. Nothing particulary interesting when it comes to scalling and also it's not enchantable.
Great weapon for low level twink but you have to complete entire game and half of NG+ to get it... Unless friend drops it for you or you use some exploits or cheats.
- Anonymous
If you have like a +12 greatsword class weapon can you still ascend Gwyn's soul with it?
- Anonymous
Would have been cool if the 2-handed parry button set the blade aflame/extinguished it, kinda like how the Possessed Armor Sword, Defender’s GS, and Watcher’s GS worked in DS2
- Anonymous
This weapon's kind of interesting imho because just about any build can use it when you get to forge it.
Even an Int build can easily reach 20 strengh and 10 Dex.
And while the bad scalling may be a turn off for some, it also means that anyone that managed to beat the game can use this Sword and get solid results.
It's got a little something for everyone.

almost 400 base dmg, better than the split fire dmg you cretins are begging for

from kinda let us down on the remaster but then again.. why would they change anything. it's a remaster not a remake .

Honestly I don’t know what you’re talking about, this is a great weapon, and thank God it doesn’t have split fire damage, yeah the r2 isn’t as good as the claymore, but most of the time, you’ll be using r1 anyways, 20/14 str and 10 dex are a great benchpoint, not forcing you to a quality path like other greatswords, you can invest in health, endurance so that you can finally fast roll with a good armor, intelligence and faith, hell even pyromancy likes the attunement slots, and if you’re so obsessed with numbers going up, have no fear, at 40/40 you still get more atk than a claymore anyway. FromSoftware isn’t able to balance special weapons unfortunately, but you can see that at least they tried with this one, other special weapons are downright outclassed by more easy to upgrade weapons and have laughable requirements (dss, smough’s hammer, grant, Gwyndolin’s stuff, all dragon weapons) get to have pathetic damage once you get to a certain point (moonlight spear, quelag furysword, hell I would add the moonlight greatsword itself, you have no idea how many magic resistant enemies are here, unlike demon’s souls) or have such obtuse requirements that screw over your build (artorias and all his greatswords), this weapons allows you to take liberties into building your character into whatever you want it to be, and if you still decide to get str/dex later on, it doesn’t fall as hard as a black knight sword does, on the contrary, 537 at 40/40.

You make this with the soul of Gwyn himself, if even without all his power he can ignite his sword, why cant his soul? This shouldve been a str/fth phys/fire weapon, nothing will convince me otherwise. This is such a letdown of a weapon. Sunlight spear clears unfortunately. Praise the Sun!
- Anonymous
All they needed was to have it wreathed in flames, deal fire damage and have a unique moveset similar to how Gwyn swings it, like come the hell on Fromsoft, would it have killed them to actually at least TRY and make the final boss soul's weapon actually cool and unique?
- Anonymous
For such little Stat requirement it really has good dmg. Bump your sword to +5, upgrade your shield and armor to max, get your vig and end up and you're set. You basically can start off as a warrior put a handful of points into str and focus on magic til you get your sword.
This is all theory. I'm gonna go test that out
- Anonymous
I'm Not gonna disagree with the people who complain about how lackluster and boring this weapon is for something you get from the final boss soul, But to be fair it may be a similar situation to Solaire's armor and sunlight straight sword, where there's nothing actually inherently special about this sword, it's just a pretty ordinary greatsword which is only all special and wreathed in flame because of Gwyn's own power, but when it's not wielded in his hands It's not actually special at all, It's just a testament to how powerful Gwyn was, and using it for yourself just confirms that it's not actually special at all in anyone else's hands, Or at least that's my reasoning on why this sword's so underwhelming and lame for being the weapon you get from the Soul of Gwyn himself.
- Anonymous
I'd imagine the base damage makes it good for characters with just enough stats to wield it, ie casters. Problem is, the obsidian greatsword is better to that end
Imagine how strong Gwyn would be if he actually had a good weapon
- Anonymous
Extremely disappointing weapon. Shitty scaling, shitty fashion, and nothing unique. Thank you Miyazaki

DS1 is one of the most trolling games ever.
After beating whole game you can challenge final boss and take his soul.
Then you can go into NG+ and beat half of the game again to craft weapon from this soul.
And what is your reward? Pretty average sword with crappy scalling and nothing special about it. Worst and most useless of all boss soul weapons.
Thank You Dark Souls...
- Anonymous
it beats out bks......at about 100 points in str and dex....

A greatsword that boasts high base damage and... that's it. So? Gwyn was a twink all this time?
"But it's supposed to be a simple sword, it was gwyn who had the first flame not the sword" the fatal problem with this excuse is that we use THE SOUL of gwyn, wich can also be used to craft the SUNLIGHT SPEAR. That explanation would only make sense if we received the sword directly, instead of the soul to craft it.
- Anonymous
I was disappointed when I crafted this and it didn't have the flame stuff . I was curious if it had good damage or not so I tested it for few bosses. Now I have beated Gwen 2 times with this sword .

I think the sword being a huge letdown is supposed to be a testament to how powerful Gwyn was in his day. Like how Solaire’s set says there’s nothing special about it, it’s just that Solaire’s trained so hard etc. etc.
Imagine beating the very final boss of the game, finally finishing the game, going into NG+, going excited to craft this just to realize it's a reskin of the Greatsword.

Not even Gwyn's weapon had faith scaling in DS1. We've come a long way

The fact you can’t upgrade this weapon to the fire path makes me mad

heavy attack on this weapon is garbage. its so slow and only just barely deals more damage then 2 r1s and takes about twice as long to use
- Anonymous
Str rn is 34 on NG++ (main stat is Int) but in all reality I'm getting this sword just because I'm in the collecting state of the game right now because at this point the bosses aren't really much to me and I just want their equipment so I can get the all equipment achievement.. but I am however going to try it out seems ok
- Anonymous
For those of you wondering the point for this weapon is that its good for builds with min str and dex. So for example at 16 str 10 dex this sword has 431 physical attacks two handed while claymore only has 342 physical attacks. So if you need a high physical damage(no split damage) weapon as sorc or faith build with no investment into str and dex then this is the weapon for you.
- Anonymous
they couldn't have added some fire damage and faith scaling?
- Anonymous
is there anything special about this weapon? why would I use it over a claymore? genuine question

I made this and went to pvp, immediately someone parried it and i died. I guess it really does have the spirit of gwyn.

A very boring weapon, but if it works for some of yall, i cant call it "bad"
- Anonymous
Because of the relatively high base damage and low scaling, it’s actually one of the best greatswords for low- mid sl builds
PVE is fine of course. PVP I think it might be High Tier? Below the absolute best, but still very good. Great for Dead Angles. Basically the move-set is like the Claymore (a Top Tier for sure) with bad scaling (fine base damage though) but the real problem, and reason why this is not among the best of the best is the R2 (one handed and two handed) is quite slow (and thus parry-able and all around punishable).
In any case trying to connect all these "slow R2s" is always fun for any weapon: you go unlock, making the opponent chase for you or whatever, then with precise timing you R2 and unlock face the direction of your opponent the moment you hit
- Anonymous
this sword WISHES it could be as good as DS3 profaned greatsword...
- Anonymous
Looking at the damage numbers I didn't expect it to be too bad on a 40/40 character, but wow that R2 sucks

How come Gwyn can use it with fire but once aquired you can't emit fire onto it?

Just killed Ornstein and Smough with this in NG+. The damage and moveset ain't bad, but I really wish we could put resins on it
- Anonymous
End game my ass, I made it thinking I could make a great fire type build but it was disappointing
- Anonymous
Ngl this weapon is kind of underwhelming considering its using the soul of a lord.
- Anonymous
Gwyn likely didn’t have a flame sword before he linked the fire, that act is probably what turned it into the flame sword as he became a slave to the first flame therefore it makes perfect sense that we don’t get it ourselves. What really sucks is we don’t get his unique move set with the R2 attacks. Heavy swipes, a huge thrust and a sick uppercut yet all we’re given is a lame slam attack that has you get on your knees and beg others to backstab you in PvP. Conclusion: could of been better either way, from soft still confirmed as trolls.
- Anonymous
Even when they had the chance to do better in DS III with Soul of Cinder, they just didn't.

What is wrong with you people just use queelag sword if you want something with flame so bad!

An ancient legendary sword, formed from the burning soul of a lord who bound the first flame, literally stood on fire in the final battle and burned us to ashes with his fiery sword, does no fire damage itself and cannot even be buffed with fire ? Welcome to Dark Souls.

Best weapon I have ever used in PVP.
It has great stats and an amazing range for the swing attack (what matter the most in PVP with greatswords, range, more than ttack). I run and start the swing before the other player is near me, before I should (because they always come to you to evade the attack by rolling)... but with its range it gets the player before he can roll... and then I can combo him; it was impressive how this ALWAYS WORKED! It worked by the time I had to fight against 2 or 3 invaders at the same time in order to lose.
Used this sword and only it ever since (it was when I played Dark Souls back in 2013~2014, don't know if the remaster changed anything).

After killing Sif i was able to forge this with a +10 Longsword, I was also given the option to forge the Abyss Greatsword also. Anybody else experience this during their first playthrough??
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
It is slightly weaker than the Black Knight Sword, so if you have one don't bother with this. HOWEVER, it swings a bit faster than the black knight sword and the heavy attack slams your opponents down so it's worth a try if you find the black knight sword too slow. Still garbage tier weapon with***** scaling compared to the other boss soul weapons.
- Anonymous
I guess that's the whole reason you'd choose Sunlight Spear over this right?

This sword is a f****ng beast i killed Manus single handedly no shield just this sword and my elite knight set, and i did the same tactics to kill 2 sanctuary guardians,, again just this sword no shield and elite knight set,,, this sword is a beast (And this is no BS)

I am disappointed I thought I was going to have fun swinging around a giant sword that was BETTER THEN THE SWORD I USED WHEN THE SWORD WAS UNUPGRADED you couldn't beat Pinwheel with the great sword fully upgraded and then I looked at the scaling and my jaw dropped. I wondered how would make this mess.
- Anonymous
It's incredibly disappointing that this doesn't even have faith scaling, or have some innate fire damage. A disappointing weapon for a disappointing boss, I suppose
- Anonymous
Would have been way better if augmentable with at least charcoal or Sunlight blade. Or had the Thrust style R2.
- Anonymous
You’d think for an endgame, NG+ exclusive weapon, this weapon would at least have similar scaling to the freaking claymore.
- Anonymous

This is obtained by ascending a claymore not a straight sword

The best thing you can do with this is moveswap glitch this sword as a twohanded offhand-weapon with the fury sword in the main hand. That way you at least get cool looking fire attacks on rolls and sprints.

Thought this was gonna be some cool and overpowered sword. Was very dissapointed. Honestly, I'd much rather stick to the Black Knight Greatsword, Moonlight Greatsword or Greatsword of Artorias. Much better than this Claymore trying to be a better sword.
- Anonymous
Why is +1 weaker than base sword? Is this a misstype or is that how it is?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Worst decision you can make with Gwyn's Soul. Just go for Sunlight Spear if you're a Zappy Boi or take the 40,000 souls.
- Anonymous
Viable for experienced players, newcomers should stay away from it OR train a bit with it before trying to main it. The R2 attack is all about timing and knowing your enemy, not impossible to use, there are worse weapons than that.
- Anonymous
Updated the page to reflect that Lord Gwyn's Greatsword is not enchantable.
Would've been significantly better if it had a unique moveset or fire effects. Preferably the moveset though, fire damage pretty smelly in DS1, with the amount of bosses who are immune.
