Moonlight Butterfly is an Enemy in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. Enemies are hostile creatures that respawn when players rest at a Bonfire or upon death. Special enemies that do not respawn are classified as Bosses, Mini Bosses or Invaders.
Moonlight Butterfly Information
This is the boss of the first area of the Darkroot Garden. It can be found at the top of a moss covered staircase past the sleeping Stone Giants. The battle takes place on a long stone bridge with the Moonlight Butterfly flying next to it.
Unlike most battles, much of its combat is purely ranged and one-sided; the Moonlight Butterfly will keep its distance from the bridge for a majority of the battle and simply fire projectiles at the player.
Drop
- Humanity
- Soul of the Moonlight Butterfly
- Blue Titanite Chunk (10% Chance)
- Blue Titanite Chunk x2 (0.3% Chance)
- Blue Titanite Slab (0.2% Chance)
Attacks
All of its attacks deal magic damage.
Energy spears
Flings 6-8 fast moving spears that inflict medium damage. Dodge when the butterfly is charging energy in its mouth.
Energy Orbs
These are 3-5 homing orbs that cause heavy damage. On the upside, they are slow; they charge up like the spears so dodge them at the same point.
Energy Bomb
After the Butterfly's health drops beyond 50%, its attacks start becoming faster. It will charge and release a big blue energy bomb, in the direction its horn is pointing, when it hovers on top of the bridge. Hard to block, move behind the Butterfly to dodge it.
Ray Beam
This attack is rarely used. From its usual position, it charges, and shoots a continuous beam of energy from one side of the bridge, to the other. Can be dodged by rolling through the beam.
Face Bomb
The Butterfly will rest its head at the side of the bridge to drink nectar, which also replenishes its health by about 50 HP. Before it moves back to flying position, it charges up and causes a small explosion. Move away from it as it starts charging.
Hints & Tips
- Use 2 hands when the Butterfly rests on the bridge for maximum damage.
- To get there, you do not have to fight all the enemies in the forest, just hug the left wall as you enter the area with the big armored sleeping enemies, follow the left fall all the way to the ruins, the gate to the tower is behind one of the resting large enemies, just sprint past him, and go up the stairs, and the Butterfly is behind the white fog.
- Dodging is crucial for this fight, so make sure your equip weight allows you to dodge fast.
- Easter Egg:You can see the Moonlight Butterfly floating up by the ruins when near the glowing seal doorway, foreshadowing the upcoming boss battle. You cannot damage the Moonlight Butterfly from this position.
- Always hug the wall when dodging the Butterfly - this makes it much easier to dodge.
- A shield with good magic resistance can be used to block the small energy spears with little damage; The Crest Shield from Oscar of Astora after returning to the Northern Undead Asylum, is a constant drop. Appropriately enough, the Crystal Ring Shield (crafted from the this boss's soul) is ideal for this fight because it has awesome magic resistance and is very light. Of course, this shield is only available in NG+.
- There is a glitch that may occur if you don't kill the Sleeping Stone Giant next to the stairs leading to the boss, which makes Moonlight Butterfly aggro him downstairs and then vanish - happened to me several times on different characters.
Summon
- If the player is in human form, the Witch Beatrice can be summoned. Her summoning sign is hidden behind a bush at the base of the staircase. Summoning her will make the boss-battle into a cakewalk.
- If you summon Witch Beatrice in this fight, she can also be summoned in the Four Kings Boss fight.
Strategy
Melee
- Target the Butterfly and strafe with it, keeping it as directly in front of you as possible. You've got leeway, but you need to be able to roll to your sides in order to dodge its attacks.
- When it starts to charge an attack, roll just before it releases the attack. Roll again immediately, if necessary -I like to roll back toward the direction from which I rolled the first, but it's not terribly important - just keep up with The Butterfly. Repeat.
- When the beam attack is used, press up against the wall closest to the Butterfly and roll once the beam nears your position. Timing is key here, and if you get it right, it will go just swimmingly.
- When it lands, beat it to a pulp. Avoid it's explosive attack, which should be easy as it charges up for a while. Repeat this every time it lands, obviously.
- When it flies over you, hide behind the door you came in.
Ranged/Mages
You're going to need some type of bow and a ton of arrows. Without a high amount of dexterity, this method of battle will be a long and tedious one. If you have the Sunlight Spear miracle, a few strikes will make this fight easy as pie. Or, you can farm for enough souls to purchase 25-30 Firebombs from the male merchant, which makes this the easiest boss fight in the game. Roll & toss, then repeat.
Sorcerers should have no problem with this boss. Just do you.
As a normal enemy
They can be found resting on ledges in the Crystal Caves. They'll respawn every bonfire, but they won't attack you unless provoked. They drop blue titanite chunks (rare) and blue titanite slabs (excruciatingly rare).

my question is, lore wise, why is there a moonlight butterfly all the way over in the darkroot basin? all the others in game are in the crystal cave just chillin
- Anonymous
crystal caves butterflies are worth only 400 souls in the remaster don't waste your time with these

This fight is a load of **** for melee fighters. Yeah we're starting off like that. This stupid butterfly is just content to float out of your reach while spamming a variety of different spells. It could be considered good or bad that they're easy to dodge, but I'd argue it makes the fight even more boring. Eventually she comes in to let you hit her? I mean yeah what the hell else do you call this? Maybe she's taking a breather after exhausting every damn spell in her arsenal. She ends her rest with an AOE attack, and I was so annoyed by the length I had to wait to get her down that second time, I went for the YOLO kill and luckily came out victorious.

The original, unpatched version gave only 3k souls, no humanity, nor homeward boner. From was so stingy at 1st!
Is it made up for with the snuggly unlimited trade glitch and the super-roll at 50% load with the ninja ring?

if you have master's key you can run straight to this boss at the start of the game, make sure to de-hollow, stick to the left and quit and reload before summoning (to de-aggro enemies) witch beatrice as she's practically a cheese and will solo the entire fight equip whatever armour you have that has the highest magic resistance and watch out for the homing attack because it can and will one shot at low vigor even if you're blocking, you can also pickup elite knight set on the way which is nice

Easiest and most boring boss in a game, done it first try with auto aiming with a bow. I haven't even bothered dodging much just 2 estus used just to be sure, 30 arrows and it's dead. Those human bandits were 10 million times stronger especially that aim******* archer.

I had such a hard time with this boss. I only managed to beat it thanks to my boyfriend helping and motivating me. I used a Halberd+2 and a Light Crossbow I picked up in Undead Burg and upgraded to +2. I used Wood Bolts that I bight from the blacksmith near the Titanite Demon. The only reason I used Wood Bolts is because they were the cheapest and I could get a lot of them.

Oh, joyous rapture! The sheer hilarity lies in the exquisitely enchanting spectacle of a wondrous, magical giant moonlight butterfly, adorned with resplendent luminescence, gracefully descending upon the earth with the most ethereal and whimsical of motions! HAHAHA!!!

Try stocking up on firebombs, wait for it to switch sides on the bridge and then throw em once its on the other side as it stays still for a couple seconds after the fact

For melee builds, pyromancy in DS1 doesn't require fth/int investment so to have a ranged attack option I suggest upgrade your pyromancy flame it should make this kind of fights much more easier/less annoying.

For melee builds, firebombs work pretty good against this boss. IIRC 15 are enough to kill it on NG, and even less if you're using black firebombs. Just be mindful of the butterfly's position, because your throws CAN miss. In my experience, the more or less consistent way is to line yourself up with the butterfly just as it's about to change direction, and throw the bomb. But since firebombs are so cheap, you can just stack 99 and throw them whenever you feel lucky.

I like how they removed comments on the Gwyndolin page lmfao.

I really wish this boss had more moves or maybe even was just non hostile because I adore it's looks and atmosphere. On dex builds/low equipment load it doesn't even matter when you roll out of it's attacks, as long as they are at least halfway to you, you're gonna dodge them 95% of the time (except for the laser, but it's not super hard to avoid either), and if you use heavy stuff, this boss can just be an annoying nuisance.
But with a good upgraded weapon, even with a melee build you can kill it the first time it lands near the bridge. You just need some patience, and if you have ANYTHING that can hurt it from range when it's flying (soul arrow, crossbows, throwing knives, any random bullshit you got on your person) it will speed things up a little bit. And if you have a shield with good magic resistance, you can just block most of his attacks with no real problem.

why can't I shoot it with lock on? Do I really have to free aim now?

What the **** is this boss? I play like a ****ing idiot so my equip load is like 50/60 and i fat roll. I use an ultra greatsword. I literally FAT ROLLED, dodged 5 of his attacks and then he just let me hit him?? He put his head in the hole and i 4 shot him

Meanwhile me in Crystal Cave:
"This place makes me nervous."
Guys, here me out. Butterfly without the "erfly" says "butt". What the **** were fromsoft thinking putting such vulgar language in a game marketed for such a wide audience? Come on man...

I found that rolling into the wall is way better. When you dodge to the side you have a way higher chance of getting hit by the homing attack

Random fact: The butterfly can regenerate health (albiet very little) while resting at the bridge.

1. Get Gold-Hemmed Black Set
2. Get the Crest Shield from Oscar (Return to Asylum)
3. Get the Chaos Fireball Spell
The Shield & Set will help negate all the magic damage, you'll get maybe 10-20 damage from that homing blast it does (whereas normally you'd lose 30-50% hp). Keep your shield up the entire time it's attacking from a distance. When it lands, throw Chaos Fireballs in it's face, it will take extra damage from the lava that is spawn (Lava won't do anything to you since you cast it). You'll likely run out before it dies, so a couple more whacks of your weapon will do the trick.
It's highest resistance is magic damage, so I doubt that regular sorcery will help, unless you got something to negate it's attacks. All it's attacks are Magic Damage, so anything with the highest magic defense/resistance will help in this fight.
Compared to most bosses in the game, it is the easiest when you think about it. Yeah, it's definitely annoying, but most bosses use magic & physical damage to kill you, and most of them get your face when trying to kill you. This boss isn't in your face. The gear to counter it is really easy to find.
Even the starting equipment for Pyromancer & Sorcerer are decent alternatives to the Gold-Hemmed Black Set, and the other good alternative is laughably the Warrior's Rounded Shield that you get from the Hollow enemies in the Undead Burg, just need to upgrade it.
Check the equipment numbers for magic defense shields. the Best ones are the Shield you get from the many hollows in the Undead Burg, the Crest Shield from Oscar, or if you're lucky, the Stone Shield from those stone Giant enemies.
And tip to "Hug the wall"?? What wall? Most times the boss is FACING the entrance, so that tip won't do anything unless it's on the other side. And Lightning Spear? If you're strong enough to not only ACQUIRE that Spell but also USE that Spell, HOW THE HELL ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE WITH THIS BOSS? Whoever added that tip really needs to get their head examined.

does the boss just land on the bridge to let you hit her/him
Personally, I'm never a big fan of the moonlight butterfly, even at the original dark souls that I started. The only thing about the fight was the background music. That said, the fight is overall tedious if you're on a melee build. Without a magic shield, the fight becomes a pain and with the magic shield, it becomes child's play. The fact that the moonlight butterfly spends most of it's time staying out of your reach and spamming random magic. The lore? It's a creation of Seath, the scaleless and the main reason why that the moonlight butterfly is on darkroot garden is to eat the flowers. I don't like the overall purpose of the boss as a whole as I wish Seath create something better and stronger, not a huge butterfly. In short, the moonlight butterfly is a terrible boss and there's a reason why that fromsoft consider this optional.

This thing perched on the castle visible long before reaching it adds so much to the aesthetic of the area. I wish it was passive until you attacked it like the ones in the crystal caves. I would absolutely keep this thing alive.

There's something weird about this boss, mechanically.
In the original release of the game there's a FANTASTIC cheat table that has all kinds of options and settings for messing around with, one of which is making it so you can't agro enemies. When you toggle this on and start a boss fight, every boss in the game will either just stand there in it's initial position, or move to the center of the arena. Butterfly, however, will start flying to you, and then it will just fly away forever and leave the game, but won't be killed by despawning like other bosses when they go out of the loaded area. Very strange stuff.

Darkroot intruder discovered. Airplane mode activated. Intruder captured. Moolight Laser V5 initiated. Intruder has been disintegrated. Mission accomplished.

On the first playthrough, having a +5 crossbow and heavy bolts makes this anything but a "long and tedious". If you time your shots so that they don't miss as she moves, you can kill her before she lands for the first time.

it seems to me that fat rolling is actually ideal for this fight, as you'll stay ducked behind the edges of the wall for longer
- Anonymous
Ray Beam is rarely used my ass. 3 times in a row is not rare
- Anonymous
You could try going back to the undead asylum to get the crest shield, which has 80% magic block and can be very useful for the fight.
- Anonymous
If it flies over the wall and onto the side you came from, you can take cover behind the wall and stall for time.
- Anonymous
For melee builds struggling with the fight, try using the light crossbow. While it doesn't scale with any stat, this isn't much of a problem early on and it's base damage increases by a huge amount when upgraded, going from 50 dmg at +0 to 145 dmg at +5.
I would hate this boss a lot less if it had literally any lore other than "Seath threw all his magical dinner leftovers into a blender and this thing popped out"

They remind me of a certain enemy in DS3... could it be that.. Seath was trying to create angels for Gwyn but failed?
