There seems to be some sort of code issue for the drop frequency which manifests as a cap of items per minute/hour. Farming the babies continuously will yield the least souls as they will disappear before you can loot. On the contrary, waiting a minute between each group yields lots of drops that won't disappear immediately.

In my testing, you are basically guaranteed multiple humanities from a single cluster this way. Less souls per hour but way more (lootable) humanities. - Tested on PDTE.

I always just run around them. I don't even like killing the pinwheels down there. I just feel like they're just dead families down there trying to rest in peace together. It's bad enough the game makes you kill the Best Doggo, I ain't killing skellington families, man.

I think it's better to use the evil eye ring and the covetous serpent ring appropriate to whether you want souls or humanity more. Do both, and you have problems with running out, and unless you've got really high poise there's a risk of getting stunned whenever you take an estus break.
Also, I've found that they're great if you're waiting to get summoned, since you don't need to use Homeward or have downtime retracing your path like with most routes to run waiting for a summon.

I have had a revelation the little guys are exactly like fortnite players 1. Toxic as heck. 2. Childish as can be. 3. There's always more than one of them. 4. Always keep coming back until you hit with a "divine" weapon aka call them a virgin. 5. And finally they can do nothing to you. lol
