Hellkite Wyvern Information
Also referred to as a combination of Bridge/Hellkite/Red, and Dragon/Drake/Wyvern.
Description
The Hellkite Wyvern is first encountered after the Taurus Demon in the Undead Burg area. After climbing up down one flight of stairs, look across the bridge to see several undead waiting for you. If you run across the bridge at full speed with shield up at a light weight (less than 25% of your equip burden), you can make it all the way to the midpoint of the bridge without getting hit by his fire breath and duck into an area on the right side that lets you activate the first shortcut in the game (a ladder down to your previous bonfire). If you walk across the side of the bridge (without running) you can sneak to the midpoint without getting burned by the dragon as well. This is confirmed to work on both NG and NG+ of the PtdE. If you're having a trouble getting past him there is another method, get to the staircase on the right side of the bridge. Poke out a little into his line of sight in order to get him to kill the Undead, the second you see him get ready to attack run back down the stairs. Once he's back to his usual spot get around the rails and up against the wall. This wall will protect you from his fire attacks, if he doesn't come down to strike you try shooting him with a bow. He'll either shoot fire or fly towards you, you want him to fly towards you for an attack. Once he does run past him as fast as you can, don't worry about the items because once you light the Bonfire right under him you'll be able to get those items much easier. The only thing you'll need to worry about is the flying back + shooting fire attack and his tail. To make this easier destroy his tail on the platform under him where you have a clear shot at his tail.
Glitches
Note: Before glitch killing for 10,000 souls, ensure that you have farmed the 555 souls you receive for just walking up the mid bridge stairs until it is obsolete. I have recorded 10 souls per second which helped me quickly buy next level magic and levels to move onto the next zone. You may be surprised how quick 10k goes when you kill him vs farming for much more.
- After the 1.05 Patch: Shooting it from behind with one arrow can make it vanish into thin air, but it will come back during a later visit. No souls are rewarded for this.
- The Wyvern can also be attacked from behind the gate that leads to the Sunlight Altar. Approach from the rats or from the Undead Church, to prevent the dragon from flying away. Go to the top of the first stairs, where the undead soldier awaits, then turn around and walk along the ledge above the staircase. Do an overhead attack against the wall, right above the gate, and it should hit the wing of the wyvern. Alternatively, jump across to the small ledge on the other side of the staircase, where any attack should be able to hit it.
Rewards
- Killing the Hellkite Wyvern, either normally or through a glitch, will reward you with 10,000 souls (50,000 on NG+). This is more than enough to catapult a character at low level up to be much more competitive with the monsters you are about to face.
- If you destroy the creature's tail by shooting at it with your bow, you can obtain the Drake Sword, a favorite starting weapon of many players, which has a base attack rating of 200. You can shoot his tail from below the bridge with a short bow to break it. It takes 28 shots using regular wooden arrows or 13 Big Arrows with a Regular Short Bow using regular wooden arrows (done with minimum possible stats to use bow). Stand underneath the bridge, kill the couple enemies lurking around, and take your time shooting his tail. Each shot, he'll fly down to the bridge and stomp around before flying back to his perch. The Drake Sword will appear in your inventory when his tail is destroyed. (Note: when playing a low Dex build, this can be done with about 25-30 shots of Normal Bolts from the Light Crossbow too, but bring about 10 extra. Since you cannot aim crossbows as you can with bows, it takes a bit of adjusting the character position, player cam, and test shots to line up everything properly.)
- Killing the Hellkite Wyvern allows you to teleport to the Sunlight Altar bonfire after placing the Lordvessel. (Maybe outdated information, the bonfire can be warped to regardless of whether or not the Wyvern is alive)
Strategy
With a strong enough weapon and a bit of sprint/dodging:
First agitate the dragon into blasting the bridge with fire killing off all the hollows, easy enough with a bow.
From the top of the stairs fire an arrow at the Wyvern and then switching back to your main weapon, run forward to where he should land. Once you're close enough hack away since if you're behind his claws his breath won't hit you. Once he leaps up into the air run back in the opposite direction to where he'll land and continue hitting away, repeat as necessary. I did this with a +2 Lightning Halberd and he only got to fly about once.
Note: the Wyvern is completely immune to fire, meaning Fire/Chaos weapons will deal limited damage.
Ways to kill/pass the Hellkite Wyvern without directly engaging it:
- Use a bow to aim spells at his head from under the bridge near the rat tunnel. If you can get past the Wyvern as explained above and join the Warrior of Sunlight then Lightning Spear can kill the Wyvern in 5-7 hits. This strat is good for faith users, and it may also be helpful for int-magic users. Same can be done with Soul Arrow/Heavy Soul Arrow. This is by far the easiest technique.
- Shoot the Wyvern from under the bridge; first cutting off the tail then shooting the head/neck. At base stats needed for the Short Bow (purchased for 1,000 souls from Undead Merchant (Male)) it will take roughly 350-400 arrows to take him down. (The Wyven will start to heal itself after a while. While it is healing it will hold its left wing over its head to protect itself.) After 1.05 patch. It looks like Wyvern cannot be killed any more with low level bows. No matter how many arrows you shoot, he keeps regenerating himself. If your bow deals about 120 damage per hit, there is a chance of beating him; it seems his regenerating ability is too strong -keeping him at about 60% heal. The Wyvern has a different animation for when it heals its damage, it will raise its wings as if its covering/licking its wings. It only does this while standing on top of the gate that leads to the bonfire. I was able to kill the Wyvern with a +5 Short Bow and a combination of poison and wooden arrows, if you only have wooden or standard arrows, save your arrows until you have access to poison arrows.
- Shoot the wyvern's tail from below the bridge to obtain the Drake Sword. equip the drake sword as your 2nd right hand weapon. stand at the top of the stairs without causing him to breathe fire, shoot an arrow at his head/neck (this will cause him to jump down onto the bridge) quickly swap to the drake sword and hold with both hands while running into the center of the bridge and swing your sword. If you time it correctly, by time you swing your sword you will hit his head as he roars. now be quick and sprint back down the stairs. It will take a little practice but when you have it down you wont take any damage. it only takes about 10 of these to do the job.
- Note: it is possible to run past the wyvern if the player is able to roll between its legs when it lands on the bridge. This allows the player to use the bonfire across the bridge and open the gate to the Undead Parish. Be warned: the drake will fly away after you make it through, but it will keep returning to the bridge until destroyed. This means that the direct route across the bridge is still dangerous.
- If you have the Master Key, you can access the bridge, dragon free, by never walking up the stairs in Undead Burg where you first see the dragon. Instead, take the route Firelink Shrine -> New Londo Ruins -> Darkroot Basin -> Darkroot Garden -> Undead Parish -> Undead Burg. The route is dangerous this early on, and includes outrunning enemies much of the time, so you may want to remove armor during the New Londo and Darkroot sections.
- This is a NG+ or late NG strat. Run to the beginning of the bridge opposite the dragon and equip your hawk ring. Equip your bow, with this you can hit him all the way from across the bridge. If you don't have arrows or this bow yet then you wil have to run a little up the bridge and shoot your long bow (+whatever level). He will land on the bridge and begin walking towards you. Run back to the arch way and shoot a few arrows at him. When he looks as if he is going to breathe fire run/dodge down the stairs on either side that lead to where you first met Solaire. Give him a second and he will turn around to start walking towards his perch again. Let him walk 4 to 5 steps then attack with your bow again until he close and rinse/repeat running down the stairs and back up attacking. The key is to make sure he doesn't get time to return to his perch and heal. You will be surprised how fast he goes down this way (confirmed on NG+)
- A good combination is the Red Tearstone Ring, Ring of the Sun's Firstborn and Great Lightning Spear. Let an enemy damage you to trigger the Red Tearstone Ring. Stand on the right side of the bridge where you would shoot the tail to acquire the Drake Sword (You can break it off in one hit). Aim for his right wing with a Lightning Spear. Repeat until dead. You'll want to use a bow-zoom to aim. Will go down in 5-6 hits. THIS WAS DONE ON NG+ with a SL 120 Character.

You can use it to farm really easily if you get it to kill the guys on the bridge, I got 90000 in a little over an hour

I recently just finished my first gameplay ever, got the tail after first meeting by spaming arrows from below the bridge and left the drake until the very end of the game. Only then I succeeded to kill him on the bridge after many many attempts, having Tarkus armor and shield maxed and being stupidly op (I've been leveling up a lot, probably have sl twice as big as regular player, don't judge me I'm a noob and I play very safe) but come on, man, I killed Kalameet without sweat second try and only because I misclicked shield once in the first try.
Bridge drake is just insanely broken. It spams the fire like crazy, the only time I killed him was because he apparently ran out of fire or forgot how to use it, standing still in place like dumb.
Now in ng+ and I again can't deal with him ~_~
I'm going to use the "strategy" that my husband told me. Bait him down, waiting behind the wall next to the staircase, smash his head with 2h r2, run for your life downstairs, wait until drake comes back up, run upstairs, hide behind the wall, repeat. It takes a while but is like 99% working if you make no dumb mistake or won't be greedy.
As much as I love this game, the mini bosses are often way harder than the actual bosses, how's that? -_-'

Terrible mechanics on this guy. Spams fire attacks, and if you're lucky, you can get a couple swings in before he just spams his fire attacks again. Even with high fire DEF, you're constantly being knocked down, which makes it almost impossible to recover from in time to hit him.
There's no fun way to fight this guy, so cheese it is.

It's just gone, I went across the bridge, lit up the bonfire and the thing is gone. Wtf? I didn't get the souls neither like if it killed itself.

Pretty easy to kill but you have to be patient.
Fire breath deals heavy aoe damage not only to your health but also to your poise. So forget about tanking and instead avoid fire. Don't stand in the middle of the bridge since breath is strongest there instead use stairs and walls to for cover. Also if you get hit stand still and don't run while in the fire. The faster you move the more damage you will take (something with hitboxes probably).
Take safe spot near the stairs and wait for it to land nearby then attack with everything you got. If wywern decides to fly around and spew fire directly from above forget about fighting and hide down the stairs.
Depending what game cycle you are and what you use to attack it can take more or less time. Lighting and magic works best but pure physical damage can also do the trick.

With Flash Sweat you can tank a good few hits of the fire breath and just run all the way to the bonfire

Literally impossible to beat in NG+ without cheesing... Black Knight Shield (95% FR), Fire Stoneplate Ring, +5 Black Iron Armor with Gold-hemmed Black Skirt (382 Fire Def total) + Flash Sweat it still two-shots you with the fly-through attack - one for the shield and one for your entire HP bar. The attack is pretty much guaranteed to happen after a few bite attacks, during which I only ever get 1000-2000 damage done through bleed with a +15 Great Scythe which ends up being about 15-20% of it's health. From there it is certain death as running for cover on the bridge does not help with the overhead flame attack and you never get enough time to get a hit in if you were to run around the staircase. Good job Dark Souls, skill issue smh. [DSR, latest patch]

Unfortunately, the strategy for melee on this page is incorrect. Attempting it is likely to lead to your death. If you're caught too far from the stairs against this bad boy, he can infinitely charge back and forth spewing fire, effectively chainstunning you to death with no hope of escape or survival.

The hitbox for his fire attack when he's down on the bridge is just too large, he'll even hit you halfway down those stairs! He seeming leaves no openings at all, I just keep getting spammed with fire and I have no way of approaching him to get a hit without being burnt to a crisp. I guess its nice that I get 555 souls every time we start this charade and the retrieval spot is usually right next to the "safe" zone.
Wyverns fire destroys you in NG+ even with Flame stoneplate ring, stone armor, and dragon crest shield. Caution is required.

Bait his fire breath and make it kill every enemy on the bridge, move to the opposite side of the stairs, shoot him once and wait for him to come down.
1. When the dragon is close enough for a hit you move out and hit him once, twice if you feel lucky.
2. Get back to cover.
3. Repeat until he's dead.
You will take some damage from time to time but it won't be fatal.
Do not follow the advice to stand behind his claws as this will expose you to unnecessary danger and most likely result in a swift and fiery death. His fire breath from above covers the whole bridge.
You're not safe behind his claws!
I call bs on the claim that he flew only once using this tactic. I couldnt get more than two hits (most times just one) before the dragon decided to either leap backwards or take to the air. You do not want to chase after the dragon if he leaps backwards.

I FINALLY killed this bastard by first sniping his tail from under the bridge using a +10 heavy crossbow with heavy bolts, then trying to finish him off the same way. He healed himself just ever so slightly faster than my DPS, so I went up and lured him onto the bridge. I managed to kill him by chopping his legs with a +5 black knight sword after getting underneath him before he could flame breath me. I was expecting to get instakilled by him flying up and breathing down, but either I got lucky or he doesn't do that attack on the section of bridge close to the parish entrance.

i didn't kill this guy until after i'd gotten the dragonslayer greatbow. went to a window in the tower opposite him and sniped him with it until he died.

I can confirm the glitch standing on the ledge above the gate works. After about ten jumps i got across with no armor on. I used my black knight sword that im so lucky to have gotten on my first knight kill. Standard swing into the coloumn of brick thats sticking out a little, youll hear a hit noise and hear the dragon roar, fly take some steps and come back. Do this every 8 seconds or so for about 5 minutes and he will go down. I was worried about his health regen so towards the end i was timing it as quickly as a could. The health gauge is hard to see.
I could be wrong but I think this guy has the most damaging move in maybe the whole series. When he does the one when he is the middle of the bridge and flies up then breathes fire down, it's a garunteed kill on like ng3 and above. I maxxed my stats with full havels/Tarkus and made my health bar go all the way to the end of the screen, it still one shot me.

Absolutely sh*t and poorly designed miniboss if you wanna fight it without cheese and you're not a sorcerer. Attacks nonstop with almost no recovery time, and the vertical flight into fire breath below is absolutely bullsh*t. If you get hit by that attack directly, it doesn't matter how much fire resistance you have (armor, fire res pyromancy, fire res ring) it WILL one shot you.
One shotting it with Dark Bead in my 2nd chara is sooooooo satisfying. Get rekt you stupid poor designed fake dragon.

What nonsense. Comments also written by amateurs. The dragon is immune to poison or has a very, very high resistance. I managed to cut off his tail with 40-50 poison arrows and make him heal. He was not poisoned at all during this time. What you need to do is bring him to ~60% hp before he starts to heal (if you notice him covering himself with his wings, it means you've done too much dmg), shoot him once to make him fall onto the bridge and attack him with your strongest spells, jump attacks with 2h weapons etc. Also, when it flies up to breathe fire underneath, you can't be close. You will die instantly with even 300 with fire resistance. If you can't kill him quickly after landing, you'll have to play cat and mouse, preferably with a Dragon Crest shield and high fire resistance.
The problem with this dragon is that after cutting off the tail and getting the weapon, you don't care about this location and 10k souls. If only there was even a titanite chunk in the loot. Even some unintelligent developer gave the dragon the ability to heal. What for? To waste time?

First time killing it with a +15 zweihander, close to finish my playthrough. Once he gets down to the bridge, try to attack him from one of the corner (maybe hit his toe?) and when he starts cheese-flaming you, go to the middle of the bridge. If you stay in your corner, the wyvern will keep flaming you, but if you lurk him to fight 1on1, he will came to you. Go to your corner, and when he passes, hit his toe. Don't ever bother blocking his flame attack.
It's not worth it, I just killed it cuz I could, but there's no real reward (10k souls isn't that much...)

Farm 999 arrows and grind or come back when you have enough dps to kill him in 3 swings. Dont be fooled into thinking you can actually fight the dragon

I made a mistake not killing this boss in the first playthrough and had to kill him in NG+. It was hell, took me 2 hours and countless death. Plus I only kindled the Undead Burg bonfire to 10 estus flasks and it was a huge mistake. In the end I ran out of estus flash and had to use some humanity to be able to kill him. I got a lot of humanity from Chasm of the Abyss to it wasn't a big deal.

I just beat the carpa demon, going backwards from firelink shrine. When up the stairs, beat the 2 axe guys, the solider and the 2 dudes hiding in the house. I headed up the next stairs to the 3 guys, beat them and as I climbed the ladder to the 3 bombs guys, I heard the dragon roar..then I got 10,000 souls. I checked, he is dead. Idk how it happened but OK. Unpatch verison xbox360.

This boss is a genius. We players always (often) look for a way to cheese bosses. This guy found a way to cheese us. This lads, is a cheese fest.
I've only ever killed this thing twice and I have over 2,000 hours in Dark Souls 1 (PPTDE and Remastered combined). The first time was a long time ago in PPTDE and I don't remember how I did it. The second time in Dark Souls Remastered and it was in NG+ with a int build. I had all the sorcery damage boosting items equipped and Power Within cast iirc. It only took three or 4 Dark Beads to kill it, lol. I died on one attempt but luckily I got it on the second attempt. Thank you Manus for creating op dark magic.

Genuinely what is the point of this thing? It's even more annoying than the Anor Londo archers, just one-shotting you with it's fire if you even think about trying to get the bonfire. Sometimes I look at things in Dark Souls (Bed of Chaos for example) and think "Who in their right ****ing mind came up with this terrible excuse of a game mechanic?", I think the same with this thing.

Its an easy kill, just get him to the far end of the bridge and hide behind the wall to dodge the fire, then when he walks back pop him in the toe. Maybe I bugged it but as far as im concerned just repeat that.

I was killed attempting to murder this lad in Ng+ more than any actual boss. And then, when I finally had it at low health, it started its straight up jumping fire attack. It somehow managed to kill itself after the 4th jump (Flash Sweat saved me). At least I got the loots, though.

I returned to the bridge to attempt to kill it with sorcery, as it was my first intelligence build, but it just wasn't there. Does anyone know why?
If it matters I had killed all four lords, and I ran past it at the begging for the bonfire.
You can have the absolutely most fire resistant armor,rings,shield and this dude will still one shot you after the 2nd or 3rd fire breath attack absolute bullsh1t

Ng+ is approx 5000 hp. I was using +15 demon's greataxe with power within and crystal magic weapon buffed by oolicle ivory catalyst (46 str 26 int). Hit with two light two handed at around 1300 each, took out a little bit less than half health before I died.

Killed this thing once, a long time ago, near the end of my very first playthrough. Never bothered to try again. It's really not worth the effort. No great reward or achievement for killing it.

Just killed the dragon. One thing I noticed is that it's better to roll and tank the vertical flame (and try to maneuver to the stairs) than to block, blocking the flame essentially kills you for some reason (it crits?).

Don’t know if it was just for me but I noticed the wyvern might show mercy, before I got the shortcut he didn’t breath fire until I approached the claymore, and then twice when I had souls on the bridge he would not breath fire until I either approached where the claymore is or a couple seconds after I grabbed the souls

Can the wyvern heal himself? I tried shooting him with magic and normal arrows so many times, but when I took him to less than half health bar, he took cover under his left wing for a few seconds, while he was on the wall ; when he stopped, I sworn that his health was up to 2/3. I tried attacking him while he was doing that animation, but he wouldn't stop and he came down only when he finished. Am I wrong? Do I have to use stronger weapons to make him stop doing that?
I'm currently playing the Xbox 360 version of this game, so I don't know if this is still a thing.

I'm one of those people that firmly believes this was going to be a proper mini-boss but From never fully finished the overall fight mechanics and had to ship the game and this is what we got. Toss this in with Bed of Chaos.
I need your help. What exactly baits the Dragon to come down into the bridge? (from his post in the wall over the bonfire door)... I've seen people throwing sht at him (knives and arrows) to make him come down... If you rest in the Undead Burg bonfire (the one you kick the ladder to get to) and then go up on the bridge he will fire kill the enemies and will take him roughly 14 seconds to come down and fight.
I remember seeing some people runing from the Solaire place then hiding on the left wall of the bridge (while surviving his fire attack) and then somehow waiting the 14 seconds to make him come down (they do not throw anything at him). But I can't make that happen, the dragon just won't come down... ANYONE with like a good explanation?

After defeating the black dragon Kalameet in Oolacile, I felt like I had some unfinished business with this guy so I headed back to the Undead Parish for sweet revenge. Then I instantly regretted doing that. You only have so many options to take him out; either keep firing at it from a distance and/or lure him to the bridge middle staircase and keep popping out to hit him like a freaking whac-a-mole. I mean, I get it -- he's technically not a boss so you can't fight it like one but killing it that way isn't satisfying at all and I honestly feel bad for doing it, even if it did swoop down and burn me up so many times.

a little hard to aim but I used 4 CSS on NG+ to obliterate him, it was honestly kinda sad, I got all preped with a hyper build with sanctus, PW and red tearstone, I had normal SS to kill him too, but 4 shots with CSS annihilated him (50 int TCC as my catalyst), overleveling for the win I guess XD

Killed him in NG+++ with with silverknight straight sword + sunlight blade, go to the left and wait about 10s and he will fly down, go attack asap with 2 hand high chance his first attack will only blow thing front of his face (give a lot of time to attack) then go down stair on the right of bridge then repeat, only need 2 time like that. (dex 56 str 50 faith 40)
I finally killed it and got 10k soul. Here's what I used lol: Stone armor set, black knight halberd+4 (Two-handed because shields are no use to him imo), Grass crest shield (For stamina), Flame stoneplate ring, and gold serpent ring which has no use against him.

I might leave this enemy alive in future playthroughs instead of coming back to fight it when I’m stronger. It’s visually amazing and it flies off every time you warp to the altar which makes for a great sight watching it sail through the air.

it says in the rewards section that you can only warp to the sunlight altar bonfire after killing him but this isn't true

20% of invasions at the sunlight altar are instant death from the drake, 10/10 spawn point

There is another easy strategy to kill this dragon. I noticed this hasn't been mentioned here. The normal method to obtain the sword is to go under the bridge and shoot its tail with arrows. The dragon moves to the bridge. You have a small time window to shoot the tail again before he flies off back to the top. If you can manage to cut off the tail exactly when the dragon is on the bridge, the dragon falls off to the other side of the bridge. Tried this many times and it worked every time for me. The only problem is to know how many hits is required, which depends on the item you're using and the stats.

You can teleport to the sunlight altar without killing the drake. Who the hell wrote that you have to kill it to do that? They're totally unrelated...

If anybody is curious, fighting the Hellkite Drake is not worth it. You can get the drake sword if you want, but killing him is nigh impossible on your first run through the burg. You could come back later and kill him, but at that point 10,000 souls is probably not worth the effort.

I love this guy tbh, I have only fought it on regular new game but it was a fun fight. I just stayed under it closer to the back. If it starts moving at all dodge towards the back of it, you should be able to survive any of its attacks as long as you have decent fire resistance. If it flies to the other side of the bridge, just run underneath the bridge andnwait until it lands back on its starting position. I killed it at level 48 with Uchigatana +8 with a dex of 28, and it was honestly easy. Just run past it upon initial encounter and fight it after defeating the twin gargoyles and you should already be powerful enough. I don't know how hard it is on NG+ so I'll just trust people who say fire one shots. Also my dad said that it's possible to kill it if you have a lot of poison arrows and just hurt it faster than it heals, so that's also an option.

The Drake will return after a certain amount of time if you revisit the bridge later on. Try running up and down it and eventually it will fly back

it takes 17 large arrow hits to get his tail sword with the short bow with 16 str 12 dex. then go up and shoot his face with an arrow at the top of the stairs to argo him then run out and hit him once in the face with his tail sword when he lands and run back down the stairs. it took 16 hits with the drake sword to finish him off.

By NG++ he's not worth bothering with. His flame gets so powerful it instakills you no matter what fire resist gear you wear

The sun altar behind the dragon is a teleport option without killing it.

For faith builds: Super easy kill by shooting great lightning spears at it from the lower left bridge. Kill the two nearest hollows and position yourself just next to the edge and shoot spears at the dragon. Use the bow sniper mode if you struggle with blindly aiming and shooting the lightning spears. This was on NG1. 5-6 spears did the trick. Should also work with sunlight spears in NG+>

He is a real pain to deal with in NG+. In NG you can kill him with basic bow and arrows, in NG+ he was outregening my +14 black bow of parish on 40 dex char using power within. Mother*****er.

In Remastered you can kill it with a short bow and standard arrows from the rat tunnel.

A helpful strategy for all you Sunbros that managed to run by the first time, run by him again and immediately dive behind the left side of the archway in the bonfire room. If you do it right the wyvern will still be on the bridge, salty as hell and constantly breathing fire. Occasionally there will be a brief respite of this where he turns away, for some reason, and gives you an opening to lock on (yes he's that close!) And hurl your lightning Spears. You can usually get 2-3 out before he turns back and starts breathing fire again. You should be able to get him dead within him turning away two or three times depending on your faith! Don't give up, you guys can do it!

Gravelord Sword Dance is fairly decent at hurting this guy, but you'll need a great deal of timing to get it off effectively. Definitely need to cut the tail first and work out where best to aim. Haven't tried aiming that Miracle from below yet, but from the bridge stairs, I can nail him for ~300 damage per casting with Velka's Talisman.

What I don't get is that NOBODY, and I do mean NOBODY, thinks of shooting the dragon from ABOVE. The tower in the Undead Parish which has a greatsword Black Knight on it has a WONDERFUL view of the dragon's center of mass, and you can slowly whittle away at it's health until it dies with ANYTHING, assuming it can out-damage the dragon's healing. The ONLY downside to doing this is that you don't get the drake sword, which, on my build, is useless. (Astora's Straightsword, anyone? Obtainable very early-game for about 1,500 souls and useable after only 1 stat upgrade if you chose the cleric, only requires starting with the master key? Way better in my book, ask me how to grab it if you're curious.) And if you're going to say, "But you have to kill a black knight to get there!" Guess what? It's as simple as this: Get 920 health or more, some very light armors such as unupgraded cleric robes, what I used, will do just fine. Aggro the knight, jump off the tower, the knight follows you down. You'll live with a tiny bit of health whilst the black knight will NOT survive. Easiest kill of a Black Knight, ever. Then use the tower to kill the dragon.

That melee strategy is pretty flawed. The dragon has like 3 different attacks, and it's basically RNG which one he'll do once he's aggro'd. Plenty of times he's just decided to jump up in the air and lay down insta-kill flames as soon as I reach his claws and start attacking.

I HATE THAT DRAGON WITH A RAGE THAT COULD KINDLE THE FIRST FLAME ITSELF! Its the worst boss in the entire game, (ASIDE FROM THE EFFING BED OF CHAOS), high health, OP attacks, all for a measly fifty thousand souls.
All in all, you might be able to beat him even easier if you have your magic leveled up, or at least your intelligence. Mine is at 20, which allowed me to kill him with just the six dark beads.
After a few tears, I finally figured how slay the damned beast! The first important thing to note is that during my first play through I had no trouble fighting the winged fiend! The trouble is in NG+. Though my character is soul 130, with 40 vitality, strength and endurance, the dammn monster could still one shot me. I can understand being one shotted with one specific attack with no shield, but with the shield up, and often times full stamina, it was a bit ridiculous. More than anything it was the inconsistancy of the one shot fire breath that pissed me off more than anything, sometimes I would die, sometimes I wouldn't. Anyway, I ended up using magic to kill the basstard. By using the Oolacile Ivory Catalyst, the Crown of Dusk, and dark bead, I was able to kill him by using all six of my magic castings. I ran up the stairs, out and around to the side of the bridge, (the part where his first fire attack can't get you) and let him kill the hollows. Then I would stand real close to the edge of the safe zone to trigger him and make him come down. Then as he came down, he would land and do a breath attack. THAN I ANNIHILATED THE BASSTARD!!!!! Just make sure that he is going to shoot out his normal fire spray and not fly up in the air, if he flies, use the black knight shield and try to block some of the damage.
on NG+ his overhead fire attack one shots you even if you have 423 fire defense, flash sweat and max HP.it's just way too strong for an enemy that isn't even a boss
