Balder Side Sword is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.
The knights of the ancient kingdom of Balder wielded these rock-solid, long swords which are excellent for thrust attacks."
"Balder was the home of Knight King Rendal, but the kingdom was reduced to ruins after a widespread outbreak of Undead."
How to Get / Where to Find the Balder Side Sword
- Rare (1%) drop from Balder Knights wielding the sword (Undead Parish and Sen's Fortress).
Hints and Tips:
- Can be given to Kingseeker Frampt to receive 50 Souls.
- Appreciated by players for its adaptability and effectiveness due to its good reach, balanced moveset and low Stamina cost.
- The sword receives an A rating in Dexterity at +14/15 along the regular reinforcement path, making it excellent for Dexterity and Quality builds, and may also be buffed. The Enchanted elemental path grants an A scaling in Intelligence, making it a good option for Mages. Other elemental paths such as Lightning or Chaos are also effective for other builds, particularly when using the powerful R2 thrust attacks.
- Has a similar move set to Longsword or Shortsword, and the same base damage as Longsword, but generally greater range at similar Stamina cost.
- The one-handed strong attack (R2) is a thrust attack both for the first and second attacks in the combo, instead of a upswing on the second attack. The second R2 thrust is faster than the first, making it particularly dangerous if the target is staggered by the first thrust or otherwise using a slower weapon. It also tracks independently of the first thrust, enabling an experienced swordsman to punish moving targets with or without target lock.
- Thrust attacks do significantly more damage than the slashes, and can benefit from the Leo Ring.
- Greater range of the sword enables users to better distance themselves from targets, and reduces the likelihood of being parried provided one does not get too close. The powerful R2 thrust attacks are also very difficult to parry at range, similar to the thrust attacks of spears.

To answer the question below. I play 125 level PvP and have noticed a wonderful anti backstabber quality to this blade.
First the R2 has long reach, low stamina and short animation this allows poking a backstabber into a safe distance.
Second when the backstabber moves close to do a teleport backstab you can spam R1 which is very quick and has very low stamina consumption- keep swiping through their backstab and the animation will still knock you to the ground but you will receive no damage.
Tips for adding respectable damage is the go with Darkmoon blade, and the Leo Ring- however the BSS can fit any play style and isn’t a one trick pony.

I'm not sure what's the whole ruckus about this sword. Yea it has good scaling with DEX but so what? It's still pretty normal sword with no special effects like bleed or critical boost. There are many much better DEX weapons.

got this when i decided to go for a dex build on a katana...i'm sorry Undead merchant...if only i'd knew i'd get it..
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I got three in a row once, no joke. I did the math and it was 1 in ~58000 chance.
- Anonymous
Why are these so rare? I got one on my first playthrough and loved, but I'm kind of mad that I got it out of sheer luck, and had I defeated the Bell Gargoyles in a couple less attempts, I would've never even known about this sword

- Anonymous
I got this drop TWICE in a single hour. Wasn't even going for it
- Anonymous
I farmed this weapon for hours on 2 different dex runs. I decide to do one cheese run with the gravelord sword on a strength build, this sword drops on the first balder knight i kill. Oh, I dropped both black knight sword and greatsword on the first dks encountered. :')
- Anonymous
One of the harder weapons to farm in DS1 but the Baller Swag Sword is worth it.

in my first playthrough i didn't know these were rare and ascended it into artorias' greatsword, which i never even used becuase of the stats requirements. good times

I hate the design, I wished it looked like Astoria straight sword or silver knight straight sword, but it looks like a giant toothpick
- Anonymous
for a faith build what is best to use?
1)something like a divine zwainhander/claymore and a crystal balder side sword to buff with miracles
2) obsidian greatsword to buff with miracles and a divine balder side sword

“I’m gonna do a strength build.”
*Balder Knight drops BSS*
“I’m gonna do a dex build.”

I have 24 STR and 14 DEX
I have this weapon
But I have a club+5
Which one should I use?
- Anonymous
Excellent weapon for dex builds, but a total pain in the ass to get, took over 2 hours last time I did a dex build
- Anonymous
Best straight sword in the game. Upgrade to crystal, don't use it until you're ready to pvp and back up your save to reload to full HP(or you know, mule if you're willing to cheat to save time). Wouldn't bother with weapon buffs with this tho you will lose your buff when you switch to your crit weapon(and this sword needs one, like the one thing it doesn't have is a crit mod). Fantastic all round main weapon for dex builds
- Anonymous
Getting this weapon on accident will literally change your entire build
- Anonymous
should I make this enchanted or use crystal magic weapon? I have 50 intelligence

Man this sword is so damn good but farming it is such a long and painful journey back and forth in undead perish
- Anonymous
I had one of these drop on the first knight I killed. I was like, Huh, I guess I'm a dex-quality guy this time.
- Anonymous
>farm this from balder knights for at least 2 hours with 410 item discovey
>upgrade to +15
>level dex and int to 40
>get crystal magic weapon
>700 AR for a straight sword
- Anonymous
Favourite weapon in the game, I like straight swords and dexterity, and this weapon is relatively realistic, and it's moveset is elegant enough, although the silver Knight sword is much sexier
- Anonymous
It has ugly crossguard and unrealistic thin blade. Wish they switched it's model with silver knight sword...
- Anonymous
Well, I must be the lucky one of the newcomers. I started the game yesterday as a sorcerer and the first knight in Undead Parish dropped the sword. Beginner's luck.
- Anonymous
For everyone who is new and wondering why this beauty is so popular: balanced moveset with slash and thrust attacks, excellent scaling in dexterity, enchantable, very light, fast attacks, beautiful design (iron and brass, no ugly dragon bones or coarse steel), "relatively easy" to farm (with a bit of luck and patience). It's not known as the Balder Swag Sword for nothing. Yeah, I'm a filthy Dex user and I'm proud of it!
- Anonymous
with 40 dex and 30 faith, you get more than 650 ar with lightning blade. thats as much as a ****ing zweihänder. disgusting but i love it

Rating weapons based on looks:
Its literally just a mini iron stick, yet something makes it look quite amusing
7/10

Very nice weapon, quick and with fairly impressive side range. Farming humanity from rats in the deeps bonfire, it frequently killed 4 rats with it's swing.
But the droprate is very low, in many cases it won't be worth the trouble.
For dex builds, there is a great scythe for free sitting there in the tombs that will outperform it.
For str builds, they might be lucky early getting a black knight sword, or if they wait till they get golden covetus serpent ring to farm it they might be better served by farming a man-serpent greatsword.
- Anonymous
Imagine being a dex user and taking more than 1 hit to kill an enemy, how pathetic. Great club giga chads for the win.
- Anonymous
Should i farm it early on or wait until i have proper farming gear?
- Anonymous
I have a 10+ balder sword and a 10+ uchigatana and the uchigatana deals more damage in average, but I read everywhere that this one is better... Why is that? What am I doing wrong?
- Anonymous
To farm this fairly early first go to Andre glitch through sen's fortress using a speedrunner techinique called "sen's skip" after that go through the level (you can pick up large titanite shards and kill giants for chunks along the way) and pick up the covetous gold serpant ring (DO NOT REST AT BONFIRE YOU WILL GET STUCK) after that simply die/use homeward bone/darksign/homeward miracle and pop some humanity then you can farm this sword and even upgrade it to +10 if you kill capra even before gargoyles.

I was working on a new character and got invaded at SL19 in the Blighttown swamp. Guy was a twink with the painting guardian sword buffed with dark moon blade and also had wrath of the gods. I spaced him with my heater shield until he got done spamming WOG and his buff expired and then used the balder side swords amazing length to roll catch him and reversed all his back stab attempts. After defeating him I finally felt like I "got gud". Thank you invader for that rewarding victory.
- Anonymous
It has E A scaling and you guys call it quality build why should I spend points into strength? This is not longsword darksword or sunlight straight sword try these weapons for "quality" build.

hey to the spell fighters out there heres some advice ive gotten in my long time playing ds1, this build i call the "Eldritch Knight" Elite knight set +10, magic balder +10, grass crest, bellowing DCR and ring of favor and protection. add in logans catalyst and CSS/SS and you have a beast for O & S
- Anonymous
And while we are sweating while farming, Andre of Astora is forging and forging and forging tirelessly on such a sword AND NEVER GETS FINISHED!
- Anonymous
this is by far the best straight sword, great damage, moveset, range and it also is the best weapon for a spellsword build

i use this in my faith builds,i usually make it a +15 with sunlight blade when im going a faith and dex build,it is a monster.

Love this sword. I have farmed 6 of them. One is on the regular path. It has been semi-retired for my new fire one. I made a divine one to get me to TotG before ringing either bell. The extras will follow other paths.
Disclaimer: I used a +10 Estoc to get me through Sen's, though.

looks so sexy with a parrying dagger in your left hand <3

The drop rates on this thing are just regular ds drop rates. I never really struggled to get one. I actually never struggled to get anything in this game with 7 and up humanitities hue hue and no serpent ring. But i always skip Taurus and Wywern so I spend more time in the church by going back and forth, so theres this

When I first started DS, I chose a pyromancer and played relatively balanced. After I got to the Anor Londo archers, I restarted because I thought I must have done something wrong. My new college roommate at the time was kind enough to walk me through the DS basics, and I decided to be a dex mage and going for the Fury Sword. But as I made it to the Parish, this dropped for me. I saw the good dex scaling and decided to give it a shot. I misread the name as "Balder Slice" for some reason, but I didn't question it. This sword was my steadfast ally as I endured my first full playthrough. I remember walking in to face Gwyn with Logan's robes and Havel's helmet on, the Balder Slice at my side. Damn, this brings me back.
Then I found out that this sword is apparently busted. *shrugs* Oh well. I still love it. And then my computer died and didn't back up my data. So long Balder Slice. You were a light in the darkness.

This weapon does not exist in the game and nothing can convince me otherwise.
Did they make this a rarer drop in the remaster? I always used this with almost all builds, and i don’t remember farming this long. Im about to have enough souls to get the crest of artorias and i gained 5 humanity while farming.... dang, i guess i may have to move on and wait till i have serpant ring or symbol of avarice
- Anonymous
The ones in Sen's Fortress seem to have a better drop rate plus you can get large titanite shards which help with upgrading it. I was farming for one and had 10 humanity and the silver serpent ring and no success after 20 runs. I put on the symbol of avarice (easily gotten with 10 Lloyds Talismans and putting the one in Sen's fortress asleep over and over) and got it on the first run. Then got a second one two runs later.
I had a similar experience with farming for titanite slabs in New Londo. Based on my experience the symbol of avarice seems to help increase the chances of a rare drop item.
- Anonymous
How much dex do you need so a +15 regular outdamages a +5 chaos?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Took me about 30min to get the sword by farming the 3 knights wielding it at the undead parrish (NG).
- Anonymous
I farmed both this and the balder shield in 15 minutes with 10 humanity only as I hadn’t access to the covetous gold ring of symbol of avarice yet. I would say the drop rate is significantly higher than 1%. I also farmed the murakumo at the shrine before with max item discovery and gave up after 90 minutes of attempts yet that weapon is listed on the wiki as a 2% chance.

holy **** i got the bkh first try, bss wtihout even knowing it was a thing, and i just got 2 silver knight swords just going through anor londo, this cartridge is blessed.

I recently got this as a drop, I too am now among the superior beings that obtained this sacred relic

This is one of my favorite weapons on the series , with 35 STR and 50 DEX It deals about 400 of damage that alongside 50 FTH with the Sunlight Blade or Darkmoon Blade you can easily deal 700-800 and that's not all combining with Power Within and the Leo Ring you might deal more than 1400 of damage.
- Anonymous
Oonga bonga stupid dexbuilderz,
we call this toothpick the Bull**** Sword bacc in our place

Get yourself this monster of a sword, get 40 dex and 40 faith, buff this thing with sunlightblade and yourself with power withing, and there you go, enjoy your 700+damage r2/2000 damage parrys with the hornet ring

Best straight sword in the series. Have you taken the Balderpill yet?

Launched DS Remastered first time. Got this swag sword from the first balder knight. Nice

Tried using this baby for a playthrough for the first time. Gwyn and Kalameet left and I'm still contantly floored how much that R2 hits for. This weapon is no joke.
- Anonymous
I tried to farm it without the ring or humanity but the things didn't go well i spent 1 hour and it didn't appear, but then i decide to use 10 humanity and in my first try It did appear.
- Anonymous
Lol, the drop rate for this is 1% without discovery boost and I can get it in half an hour with 4 humanity, yet it takes 15 hours to get the Stone Greataxe with max item discovery. Definitely “20% drop rate” my a••!
- Anonymous
The only dex straight sword that is able to compete with katanas.
- Anonymous
I'm surprised it's not required for the Knight's Honor achi. Guess FromSoft has a heart, after all.

This sword accelerated the sword arms race. Oh, you wanna R1 spam? HOW ABOUT R2 SPAM!? PRAISE THE SUN [T]/ (AIRHORN)
- Anonymous
This thing only works as a dexterity weapon. Trying to infuse it will generally lead to a vast decrease in damage. Better to keep it normal and buff it with a spell if you don't want to make a full DeX build.
- Anonymous
Should I use this for my sorcerer and if so which infusion?
- Anonymous
Trying a new thing on my current run. Should I make this into a chaos weapon or just keep it as is for dex scaling since I'm a high dex caster build?
I wish this was in Elden Ring so I can do a Vampire hunter D build.
