Black Knight Sword is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. Not to be confused with the Black Knight Greatsword.

"Greatsword of the Black Knights who wander Lordran. Used to face chaos demons."
"The Large motion that puts the weight of the body into the attack reflects the great size of their adversaries long ago."

How to Get / Where to Find the Black Knight Sword

Hints and Tips:

  • Can be given to Kingseeker Frampt to receive 50 Souls.
  • Black Knight Sword can be upgraded by using Twinkling Titanite.
  • Like every Black Knight weapon, this sword has a 20% damage modifier when used against Chaos Demons.
  • An excellent mid-game sword with decent swing speed. At 40 Str and 18 Dex, Attack rating is at decent 500. Good for stun-locking weak armored and low poise enemies.
  • Very effective while two-handed.
  • The light attack is relatively fast and does high damage.
  • The heavy attack is devastating when timed correctly: after a long windup, the player swings the blade vertically upward, causing enemies with low-mid poise to be flung in the air.

Asking for clarification here. Is it always a 20% drop rate regardless of Item Discovery stat? Is it a base 20% plus additional % with higher/max item discovery? Or is it max 20% with max item discovery? The wiki is too vague sometimes

Does the damage bonus apply to Titanite Demons? They don't seem to be linked to Izalith in any way, and their genesis isn't tied to Chaos, but they are still referred to as "Demons"...

I used to think that the first black knight on the undead burg had 100% drop rate on it because when I was a noob many years ago I started a few characters and somehow I always got it XD
now when I try to go for it it never drops xD

I got a very rare two-handed attack animation with BKS, basically my char jumped forward and slammed the sword into the ground, but I don't even know how I did it :(

            • Anonymous

Just got one in the undead burg. I then went to the undead asylum to kill the stray demon i killed the black knight at the cell where you start… and got another

fun fact: at minimum requirements and +0 upgrade level, a plunging attack from this STILL one-shots Taurus Demon

                • Anonymous

Finally got a BKS early, and I have to say ... I'm not blown away by it. Sure, it hits hard, but it's slow as hell. Likely going back to my trusty Furysword as soon as I can.

yeah, this stuff is good in pve, but there aint no way you are using this in pvp the R2 animation is a joke thats just asking for a backstab

If you're running a faith build, don't bother to get your DEX high enough to wield this thing -- you can't sunlight/darkmoon it so you're not gonna actually get that much.

I have feeling that eventually Minecraft 2 will be made. Nobody asked for it, but everybody will buy it anyway. There is money to be made and Microsoft knows that.

The Sword and Shield Black Knights don't appear in all the Locations listed here - I think only Undead Burg, Undead Asylum and KotFF?

                          • Anonymous

As a new player I got it and eventually abandoned it in the catacombs because it made everything so easy. Had a lot more fun with things like the rapier and bastard sword. Maybe use it in ng+, but consider not using it even if you get it, as it can make the game very boring and believe me, there are ways to play around the difficulty that are generally more engaging.

The game becomes legit so fkn easy with this for NG wow, just first timed ornstein and smough without having to think at level 50

I got this sword from the undead burg and i beat the final boss with it and right now im in new game plus

The attack bonus seems to apply to the Asylum demon and similar. Also on the Centipede. I got this early. Works on Tauros demon too.

I was too unlucky to get the greatsword variant but this weapon easily grew on me, and laugh my **** off whenever I send a hollow flying and it's corpse breaks the things I thrust it to.

I used two handed R2 attack on havel the rock and he fell on ground!
Such a shame for the highest poise....

                                      • Anonymous

The best all-around weapon in the game in my opinion. I got it in my first playthrough and I never needed anything else until the end. Also luckily in the second, where I also got the Claymore. While theoretically the Claymore can get better than the BKS, that is only with +15 upgrade and 40/40 STR/DEX, which happens practically until the end of the game (or in NG). When I reached Gwyn, my Claymore was still not quite as good as my BKS.
The BKS can be upgraded fully (+5) quite soon in the game. Even without, it does marvels, like one-shotting the Taurus demon when dropping on him fron the tower.
On the next game I didn't get a BKS. I felt handicapped and was disappointed with all the other weapons I tried. That game was actually harder even though I had more experience. That's the downside, it's so good it can give you bad habits and make you over-dependent on it.

One underrated part is the spin dash attack. It comes out particularly fast, has a large AOE and hits hard. Fully upgraded it can almost one shot most mobs (or with just one additional hit). Good sword with shield.

                                          • Anonymous

was doing a casual first playthrough of dark souls remastered. Killed the first sword black knight in undead burgh and he dropped it. I know this game is hard but it doesn't feel hard.

                                            • The all around MVP in the game for a quality build. It does massive damage. It upgrades incredibly easily - you can have this thing maxxed before the gargoyles. For the damage, it doesn't way much. It will stomp all of ng and works fine in higher levels.

Yes, the claymore will out pace it in due time, as will any other black knight weapon. But those weapons require way more investment in levels. The claymore is 27/40 if I recall to get it to it's potential and 40/40 to max. The other black knight weapons are just a lot of points in strength, too, and they weigh a good bit. If you are wanting fabulous damage fast that stays strong all game to the kiln, that you can get early, that doesn't require chunks or large shards, that can be maxed before opening end game areas, there's simply no better choice.

You also have three chances to get it before the end game: One in the burg, two in the asylum. Just get that ten humanity or wait until you get the gold serpent ring. I pretty much quit a run if I don't get a black knight drop before Anor Londo because it feels like a bad omen.

All of this can be yours by sl 10 if you start as a warrior and two hand or SL16 to one hand.

the black knight sword is one of the only swords in the series that is really good and is still good to this day

I grind in painted world before Orstein an Smough boss fight to 65 soul level, upgrade this weapon to +5, ascend pyromancy flame to +9 and obtain the power within pyromancy. Big guy down in no more than 5 hits, even with the phantom. Critacal hit deal about 800 or above damage. This weapon is OP

i flipping love this weapon, no matter what build i do if this beast drops early on im doing a str build easy. minimal stats to 2 hand gets you a 1 shot on the taurus demon UNUPGRADED (with a plunging attack) so obviously the weapons DO get bonuses attacking demons

                                                    • Anonymous

i know i'm probably real stupid for asking this but i wanted to know if i should get the large ember because i don't know if i can level it up to +10. so, my question is, am i able to level black night weapons to +10? because if not im not going to get the ember. thanks!:)

                                                      • Anonymous

I'd recommend doing Sen's Skip (watch a video about it, it's actually pretty easy to pull off) and picking up the Serpent Ring before boning out. With early game humanities, you then have a reliable way of getting BK weapons in the first thirty minutes of playing.

                                                        • Anonymous

I don’t know what the rules are for Xbox but the PS4 remastered version broke these weapons because you can effortlessly farm them at the start of the game by backing up your save unlike ps3 which had a 24 hour timer before you could rewrite your data. Now these weapons can be used as commonly as all the others if you choose.

                                                          • Anonymous

This weapon makes new game trivial. +5 with the minimum stat investments to one hand it is all you need for new game.

                                                            • If this weapon drops on a character I was going to make into a Dex build... should I just go strength instead and make a different character my Dex build? Or is it better to find someone trustworthy to help me move it to a strength character?

                                                              • Anonymous

I know this is quite minor, but wouldn't this weapon look even cooler if it's guard (the part just above the hilt) was curved upwards?

                                                                • Anonymous

okay i’ve read around and must be stupid but whenever i parry with this weapon specifically against say, the silver knights in anor londo, i get 1200 souls instead of 1000. is there some mechanic i’m missing?

                                                                  • Anonymous

I got this weapon on my first run at the first DK in Undeath Burg and, honestly, I leaned to duel in DS on my second run... too easy until then: no parry, no backstab, no fast roll, just stab every enemy on my way.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I just picked this beast up earlier and it is INSANE. However, the Demon Great Machete absolutely outclasses this in terms of damage, but is slower. If you prefer damage, go for DGM. If you prefer speed, use this.

                                                                      • Anonymous

I put the clues together and figured that black knight items are highly effective against demon enemies, the halberd literally obliterates everything in blighttown

                                                                        • Anonymous

got this on my first ng (two simultaneous playthroughs, got greatsword on the other)
while i'm one for speed with my weapons, i have to admit it's not too clunky for me to dislike it at all. while i rarely r2 (which admittedly has some small form of super armour), the r1's about as fast as a normal sword's r2 and with greater range and stun/poise break. as far as greatswords go for me, it's the one.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

Do you NEED to be human for them to drop it? I tried getting it once from the knight at Undead Burg. One time, I actually got it hollow, but other times I've tried and didn't get it at all. Is it just a "chance increase" to be human? Or is it a requirement?

                                                                              • Anonymous

I started out playing a thief and planning to do a dex build, but when this dropped from the first black knight I killed, all I could say was “well, I guess this is a strength build now.” I was able to two hand it by the time I fought the gargoyles, and it cut their tail in one hit. Cut gaping dragon’s in two hits. This thing hits hard, but is pretty slow. Not ideal for pvp, but not the worst either.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Got this from the Black Knight in Catacombs (first drop). Was using Deep Axe for the fast & safe attacks but tried the BKS anyway - noticed the attacks were pretty darn fast and fell in love with it. Upgraded it to +5 with absolutely no regrets. You'll stunlock the vast majority of enemies and pump out 4-5 swings back to back with about 120 stamina (which will mince pretty much anything that doesn't have poise, even certain lower-level knights, eg. early-game Lothrics - and break/stun greatshield knights in two hits if they aren't scripted to counter-attack immediately after hitting a shield, such as Cathedral knights).

Also great for stunning and riposting certain mobs, like Gargoyles, Crabs, giant semi-Dragons at Dragonpeak. Great AoE weapon with very respectable damage, especially in any situation allowing a charged heavy. Not too keen on it in enclosed spaces (will hit walls), but does have a lunge attack, a nice jump-attack, and a sort of charged thrust. Being able to WA-Poise is also handy vs certain enemies.

Was considering Hollowslayer but swapped to this. Just a delicious, well rounded weapon with nice damage.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I didn’t even have any other weapons or armor then the starter set for the warrior class. Reading all the other comments down here made me realise just how f*cking lucky I am.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Two handed heavy attack is good vs toxic hollows in painted world of ariamis, since it knocks them too far to give you the toxic status effect

                                                                                            • Anonymous

This sword is a monster, it led me through the entirety of my first playthrough. But I felt like I had cheapened the experience. So my next playthrough, I decided to create the Greatsword of Artorias and challenge myself. And I beat it. I'm now on NG+2 (Journey 3) and I found myself forced to use this sword against the Sanctuary Guardian. I feel dirty.

Luckily enough this dropped from the knight in the Undead Burg for me. Is this a weapon to keep throughout the game or one to just use at the beginning?

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Got the shield at 5% spawn chance, but after killing the black knight in Undead Burg, Asylum, Darkroot Basin and Undead Parish, still no sword. I'm sad. 4 chances of 20%, and nothing. :(

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Get the drake sword and kill the black knights in undead burg easy. Parries work too. If you get this sword off the one guarding the blue tearstone ring, put a smile on - you just lucked out.

This article says 20% but I've try more than 10 times and nothing. Maybe I have to start new games?

When he tries to slam his shield into you and stab you after you're open for a strike. Take the shot and repeat. (Also, for the BK in front of the blue tearstone ring lure him up to the open area in front of the locked door that leads to some gold pine resin and in front of the house with the ladder leading to the firebombing guys. Clear out the enemies including the sniper in the tower and use the method listed)

The long windup speed leaves you very vulnerable to interruption, but if you land the hit, you can get a speedy follow-up hit. Few enemies can withstand a 1-2 punch from this.
