Differences between Dark Souls and 2018 Remaster

  • 5 major changes from original Dark Souls
  • Online player capacity has been increased to 6 players instead of 4
  • Password matchmaking is available
  • Phantoms can heal themselves, and spawn with half as many Estus as they hold in their world. (in the original game, only hosts can heal phantoms with estus)
  • During invasions, humanity healing is disabled.
  • Weapon Matchmaking supplements Soul Level Matchmaking and Soul Level Matchmaking Range changed for some items. See Summon Range Calculator for details. (Note: it appears that there are unreported changes to the Summon Ranges for certain items in the Remaster, notably the Blue Eye Orb and Dragon Eye.  Therefore, until more information can be determined, the Summon Range Calculator should not be trusted to provide accurate information for these items in regards to summon range for the Remastered Edition.)
  • Framerate has been increased to 60 FPS instead of 30 (except for the Switch version in both docked and handheld modes)
  • Resolution has been increased to 1080p, with 4k native performance on PC and upscaled 4k from 1800p on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
  • Switch's resolution while docked is displayed in an adaptive 1080p (it changes depending on how graphically intense the game gets) while displayed in 720p in handheld mode.
  • Graphics have been "tailored" for the Nintendo Switch (according to Nintendo, talking about the Switch version)
  • The sound is compressed in the Switch version, most noticeably the sound of pressing any button in the title screen has its highs cut.
  • The remaster was developed by QOLC and Virtuos, with From and Namco operating in a publishing role.
  • A Bonfire has been added to the area where Blacksmith Vamos is encountered.
  • The Dried Finger is purchased from the Undead Merchant

Hate to say it, but calling DSR a remaster is honestly rather optimistic at best.

Only things that were noticeably changed were the bonfires and magic effects.

Wish they'd added a draining animation for the Estus Flask and even just rudimentary cloth physics like seen in Dark Souls 2.

Unbelievable that you guys suck at your job this much that you ruined an old games pvp how do you do that with such an old game it’s child’s play if you know what you’re doing idiots

        • Anonymous

So stupid I am never fighting anyone on here again the community is full of cheats and glitches apparently I literally got backstabbed from the front you all suck at your jobs do better

          • Anonymous

Literally ruined my fav game from childhood thanks can’t fight people cause they can backstab me when they are practically in front of me you’re a bunch of losers who couldn’t remaster a game correctly I have more trouble with people than actual game it’s easy all these games are step it up even Elden ring looks easy I hate what you did with pvp

            • I have both the ps4 and switch versions and Christ it looks awful on the switch. It looks meh on PS4, you can tell there's a small lighting change, bonfires look nicer, other little things, however on the switch it's flat out identical to the original game. who thought it was a good idea to have different studios handle different versions??

Anyone have an issue where you put your self o no the bonfire while using the bathroom or what not and then when you come back you have no humanity or souls, now standing next the the fire and not sitting. With no bloodstain. Like I would be okay with it if my blood stain was under my feet as it should be. But everything is simply gone.

Doesn't run well on my 300€ laptop. Everytime I tried setting it to fullscreen, it forced back into windowed mode. The framerate also suffered a lot. Compare this to DS2, that runs perfectly fine.

+ Password Matchmaking + Weapon Matchmaking + Dedicated Servers + Covenants can now be changed while resting at any Bonfire + Summoned Players can Heal Themselves with Estus instead of having to resort to item's + Humanity Healing for Summoned Players is Disabled + 60fps, 1080p and 4k + Vamos Bonfire and ability to Warp to it - Net code remains unchanged making Phantom Range and Abnormal Hitboxes still a problem - No Weapon or Magic Balance Changes In conclusion, this remaster added some quality of life changes and improved the game's framerate and resolution. However, if you plan on doing PvP you might be annoyed with how all the main issues were largely unresolved. The Single Player Experience has improved and Connection Issues for Online play have mostly been fixed, but the PvP experience is still the buggy, frustrating and easily exploited mess that it once was.

                    • Anonymous

My hatred for the remaster stems from the fact that there were no changes to the major problems the game had, for example, the glitchy PvP and the poorly implemented net code. While there were only a few quality of life changes, some better than others, the only major improvement is its now possible to get cross map backstabbed at 60fps instead of 30, so that's something.

I am unable to get my rare weapons trophy and platinum the game because I can't upgrade any staves in the game. Why is this?

                        • Anonymous

i have a challenge for you all, beat the game, but no sword. (or weapon) bows, spells, shields for defense and items. it's just for fun and all. just beat the game with just spells and bows

The sound effects in the Switch version are also very compressed, to the point where most of them sound muffled and the high frequencies are cut. The Switch is capable of better sound, but I think they compressed it all to fit it on a 4GB cartridge. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be any major changes graphic-wise and resource intensive areas like Blighttown do not tank the frame rate.

I will never understand the hate for Dark Souls Remastered, all it is is Dark Souls 1 but it runs better and is played on a better controller (On PS4 at least), better graphics (only slightly better, but whatever), and the online stuff is better (not that I care about that, I'm strictly a single player type of fella)

Weapon matchmaking sucks! Can't be the super powerful phantom anymore or get invaded by someone who can two-shots you. A lot of fun is gone...

Dammit Bandai. All you had to do was let Fromsoft do the remaster. But now its dead and so is the original. gud job.

S I D E K I C K S !!!!.... I was thinking the other day, have you ever noticed in DS3 the knights have the ability to shunt you from the side?(especially when you are circling them closely going for the backstab)... well, should they have added or maybe add the ability to do a side attack counter move to possibly "escape" a backstab or shunt a person going for a backstab by letting you stagger them just like the knights in DS3?. Of course it would have to be timed move with possibly a unique button combo (kind of like kick)... so it would kind of work like a riposte and stagger the backstab attempee.(backstab counter)

                                      • Its a good remaster, but its a good remaster of a flawed game. Dark Souls 1, as great as it is, had several little flaws that kept it from becoming a true modern masterpiece. A few of these issues were addressed in the remastering, but a bunch of them stayed in due to FROM not wanting to change too much. The most glaring of these issues are weapon stats and backstabs. Like all Souls games weapons range from terrible to amazing, with some weapons being obviously better than others. DS1 however was rather extreme in this regard. Most weapons have mediocre scaling and meh base stats, making them nearly useless late game. There also isn't much that can be be done to help as most infusions remove scaling, and the ones that do add/alter scaling simply slap on some magic damage. Not very useful, especially in the DLC. As for backstabs, they aren't too bad in themselves; rather the checking system is designed to heavily favor the attacker, making it the go-to strategy for novice players. But hey, it is EXACTLY like Dark Souls 1, just with a slightly better invasion system and framerate buff.

Remaster has horrible servers and also on xbox one sif and nito suffer from frame rate issues. Server issues cause you to dc pretty frequently. Overall worse than xbox 360 version. Save money and buy the 360 version with backwards compatibility and choose master key to skip the hard part of blighttown bc of the frame issues. Do this and you will be much more satisfied with the experience than playing the poop remaster. Btw i have already played thru the remaster abt 5 time with dif chars and ng pluses and the gravelord nito and sif fights have had really bad frame rate issues every time. Idk abt ps4 or pc but xbox ppl you have been warned

Is it likely someone will edit this page with additional changes found or just their respective pages? Because I was looking at the Dragonslayer spear's page and found that it had been changed, probably for the better-instead of faith scaling, which was only "better" than demon's spear around 40, it can be enchanted, and I was wondering if other weapons were changed.

                                            • Anonymous

some observations im wondering are either new to this game or things that i just never noticed before

-enemies seem more aggressive. Not so much in actual battle, rather that they aggro from further away and stay on you a lot longer. when I'm doing runs where I just run past them, I've noticed grunts follow me much further than I remember. A good reliable instance is the run from undead burg bonfire to the taurus demon, where the undeads chucking firebombs at me from the bridge will actually come down and hassle me while I'm fighting the three spear guys/black knight area a little further down. I used to remember them simply ignoring me past the bridge.

-only happened once, but I had the undead at the bottom of the stairs, to the right outside the undead burg bonfire, do a jumping attack at the wall near his position and then literally teleport around the wall, up the stairs, and hit me

-a semi-reliable blades of the darkmoon glitch i found that was basically free souls (and somewhat against the lore of the covenant) was that I'd get summoned into a session of Dark Anor Londo while or before the host was fighting Gwyndolin, and I wouldn't even be kicked out. I'd even sometimes see the boss health bar on my screen. I wouldn't be able to traverse the fog if I made it to the door. If I waited and they managed to defeat the boss, I'd finally be told "Host challenged boss in area, disconnecting" and be kicked out, but I'd gain a whole bunch of souls as if I'd been sunbroing for the host, and I even got the achievement for defeating Gwyndolin the first time it happened. Weird. But not complaining.

                                              • Anonymous

Yeah for me with the Iron golem I walked into the boss fight with a friend then the boss died. Like all I did was walk through the fog wall and he died.

                                                • Anonymous

The PVP is complete trash like all souls games. This is by far the worst. The rest of the game has aged well.

                                                  • Anonymous

I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem but this has happened twice in a span of five minutes. I was letting my friends summon me in as an invader to fight them and goof around, and a few times I’d get the message that says “failed to connect.” So I’d save and quit the game and come back in. When I did that all of the souls on my character were gone. My humanities were still there, but all of my souls were erased. I had around 80,000 souls the first time and around 20,000 the first time. I’m unsure if this is a common problem but everyone please be careful because that’s happened twice in such a short time span.

Another difference is that hosts don't need to worry about healing their summons. It looks like summons get 1/4 of the host's estus rounded down.

                                                      • Anonymous

nah it's not "back to roots" at all. Majority are either veterans out for the coop or people spoiled by youtube. Just look at the people using the backflipp ring. That was an ultra secret only few knew about. Now it is spinning and jumping everywhere.

                                                        • Anonymous

I am happy with the game so far, but there is one difference I am unhappy about. In the slime corridor leading to the bonfire in the Depths a bunch of the slimes glitch through the floor when they drop from the ceiling. I distinctly remember farming them in the original and I would have five or six of them to kill for the chance at a large shard. Now it's only three or very rarely four!

                                                          • Anonymous

ALL I wanted was better menus, like ds2 or ds3's menus but no the only things they changed was better graphics and a few minor things that dont even matter like changing covenants and a single new bonfire, I'll pass on this one

                                                            • Anonymous

From my playing so far, I have definitely had enemies respawn without resting at a bonfire. I went from the depths to Firelink to Andre and by the time I made it back to the depths, all of the enemies had respawned. Not sure if this is a bug or intentional.

                                                              • Anonymous

For those who want to have the differences between DS1 and DS1 Remastered.
                                                                - Dried Fingers: Compared to DS1, DS1 Remastered gives u access to the Dried Fingers much earlier in the game. You can buy it for 2k souls from the Male Undead Merchant in Undead Burg. In DS1, Prep to die-Edition, whenever u were invaded, u got something like a "invasion protection" for 10 Minutes.. This protection could be disspelled by the Dried Fingers. In DS1 Remastered, it has the same effect as in DS3. If u use it, you can summon 1 more Phantom to fight by your side but u can also be invaded an additional time which explains the Max Phantom count in your world of 6 compared to the original DS1.
                                                                - Graphics, Keybindings and Window options: Obviously constant 60 FPS, a computer port where u are able to design your keybindings in the way you like compared to the original DS1 where u were forced to adapt to the horrible keybindings, the original game gave you. Furthermore you have the option to customize your window options properly. Means you can change between windowed, full screen and windowed borderless and change your resolution.
                                                                - Network: Compared to DS1 - Prep to die, you now have the option to set a matchmaking password to play with your pals. Dedicated Servers for smoother gameplay. Was playing on Local servers instead of global. Getting summoned is giving me a small desynch between the host and me which causes some sort of lag for like 20 seconds. But after it, its very smooth, you can parry, riposte and backstab mobs properly.
                                                                - KI: Compared to DS1 - Prep to die, the mobs now have some sort of a better KI? I somehow saw this when I was infront of the bonefire in the sewers where the tons of slimes are hanging from above in the long corridor. Back in DS1 - Prep to die you could just run past them, make them fall and kill them on the ground without them ever landing on your head. In Remastered I was very suprised because the slimes will initiate their fall-animation a few seconds earlier and they deffinetly will hit you now. Made me wipe and was kinda happy because it got harder. to conclude this aspect, yea, better KI.
                                                                - Bonfires: An additonal Bonfire was added in front of Vamos (#Spoiler a npc which allows you to upgrade weapons) to make it easier to reach him. when u obtain the (#Spoiler Lordvessel).
                                                                - Estus, Humanity while online play: Back in DS1 - Prep to die, the host had to estus to heal his buddies. Phantoms had no estus. Same goes for the Invades. This feature in my opinion sucked very hard. Phantoms had the option to use a humanity to heal themselfes to full which in my opinion was also kinda broken. In Remastered the hosts estus won't heal his buddies anymore and phantoms now have their own estus with less stacks same as in DS3. Phantoms can't use humanities now to heal themselfes up to full.
                                                                - Using more Items at the same time: Basically what it says. In Remastered u have the option to use multiple items (like souls) at the same time. Same as boosting your rank in the covenant, you don't have to upgrade it 30 times.. Instead you are now prompted to chose how far you want to upgrade the rank. Wasn't the case in DS1 - Prep to die.
                                                                - Bug fixes: Heard of some bugfixes like the yes/no-dupe glitch. But haven't checked it myself.
                                                                - Covenants: You now have the option to change your covenant at the bonfire compared to DS1 - Prep to die where u had to travel through the whole world to just change it. Kinda sucks in my opinion since I loved this kind of thing in DS1, where u had to travel for ages to reach your goal. But for those who are lazy, grats.

Those are the main things I noticed while playing through the game. I still haven't completed my first playthrough tho.

I noticed tons of ppl complaining about hackers in the game who were screwing up characters of non-hackers by letting them get soft banned.. I personally haven't noticed this problem. Just don't pick up items from stranger-phantoms because those items might be modified in some sort. Being in possession of those items will result in you getting soft banned. To conclude this: Don't pick up stuff from strangers. Bet your parents already teached you that thing.
To get rid of those players, check your "recently played" list and block the hackers. Blocking them will block the possiblity to matchmake them with you.

For the rest it's still the DS1 you know. Backstabfishing at it's finest. Same mobs, same Bosses, same move sets.

I would strongly recommend to buy this. Ecspecially for those who haven't played DS1 at tiems where there were more players. playing this game. In my opinion the best DS part at all.

Hope I could help out some ppl and if I did, upvote this to let me help out more ppl which struggle to get this game or not.

Will those of us who have Prepare to Die on PC still be able to play that version or would it get patched into the Remastered Version? mainly asking because i still want to play with my old AoTA characters and Debug mode

                                                                  • Anonymous

Hopefully when I get to Blighttown (as I never got further than there on the 360 version, sad I know), the frame rate won't make me want to take a sledgehammer to my tv.

                                                                    • Anonymous

That info box/table at the top is wrong......

                                                                      DS1 was released 2011 not "2012"

Also the DLC wasn't completely "sold separately".... it could be gotten bundled with the game (Prepare to Die versions).. that came out later..

                                                                      Just saying, ya know.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Knowing that thumblebuff worked about the same way as moveset swap , thumble buff probably isn't going to work

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          Hi \o/
Anyone knows whether the game will be available on PSN ?? it is weirdly not in pre order section yet

                                                                          • Anonymous

Wasn't able to finish the first one (Laptop I had it on broke got a decent amount in though). I know it is supposed to be just a remaster but I do hope they make some gameplay improvements (not a overhaul polishing up what is already there like the camera and lock on ect). but from the experience I had the only things I hope they change are add DS3 style storage system (storage items restock used items automatically at bonfires). DS3 jumping remap I got killed so many times because I jumped when I needed to roll and vice versa. Better soul pricing for selling items not all items of a type should be the same price (preferably remove the noise too I still hear that sound). Offer covenant items in bulk. Finally, make that skull lantern not need to block to light things would be nice (perhaps more dark areas too). Playing DS 3 on the PS4 I missed a lot from DS1 and since I actually have friends on that platform that are getting it I may be encouraged to step out of my hollow casual shell ;).

Either way I sincerely hope that since DS3 got so many new people to the series that this will give the chance for others to experience the original at its best.

                                                                            • Anonymous

I wish it was a remake so they could maybe fix Iost Izalith and that terrible thing they call a boss but hey. If they implement the better ds3 jumping system it might be bearable. I hope they do/did.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                http://www.raxgraming.com/dark-souls-remastered/

                                                                                • Anonymous

i wish that they did what they did for scholar of the first sin in ds2, you know like move items and enemies. because that would add surprises and stuff.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    "Dedicated servers"
such lies... we all know it's impossable to have NPC's in another players world without resorting to P2P
these "dedicated servers" are probably for match making, doubtfully for hosting.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Uhh.. 30 fps and not even close to 1080p in 2012, so yeah, you clearly know about remasters and today's standards lol.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

"Graphics have been "tailored" for the Nintendo Switch"
So basically it's the same*****ty graphics as we had on PC 2012. So there won't be any meaning to the remaster.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Finishing izalith might be a little bit too much to ask since it's not the same developing team, but making Bed of Chaos an actual boss fight shouldn't be that hard to do. Covenants are gonna be so much fun now with dedicated servers and 6 player multiplayer scenarios.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

In addition to the ability to wear more than 2 rings and equip more the just 2 weapon slots per hand and the FP bar.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous
