Dark Hand is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.

The Darkwraiths, incited by Kaathe, use the power of the dark soul to absorb humanity, an art shared by this weapon, which also acts as a special shield. The ancients, particularly, could sap the humanity of even a replete saint in the blink of an eye."

How to Get / Where to Find the Dark Hand

Upgrade cost

  • This weapon cannot be Upgraded.
  • Leveling your Darkwraith rank will not make the Dark Hand more powerful, but cause it to steal more Humanity.

Notes

In the right hand it is a powerful fist weapon with the ability to steal humanity, from players you have invaded or NPCs, while in the left hand it also becomes a shield.

  • Give to Frampt to receive 1 soul.
  • Can be used in left hand and Produces a good but low stability shield.
  • Special: Pressing R2 while the Dark Hand is in your Right hand will initiate a grab attack, used to steal humanityfrom another player (PVP) or from some NPCs.
    • A normal Dark Hand will steal 1 humanity from players and NPCs with each grab, even if you are not a darkwraith member.
    • Ranking up as a Darkwraith will increase the amount of humanity drained with each grab.
      Darkwraith +1 = 3 humanity / +2 = 5 humanity / +3 = 10 humanity.
    • R2 bypasses any blocks and parries.
  • This move can also be used multiple times to steal all humanity from PvP players and NPCs.
  • Using R2 on an NPC should not cause them to become hostile, so you can use it freely, with the exclusion of the blacksmiths, who will become hostile upon attack.
  • Both you and your target must be at the same floor height or the R2 grab attack will only do damage instead of grabbing him.
  • The R2 grab attack will have the same animation if they have no humanity left.
  • Unlike in Dark Souls 3, the Dark Hand can parry while in the left hand, making it great for blocking elemental projectiles but still being able to parry melee attacks.
  • Obtaining the Dark Hand through killing Dark Wraiths can easily be done through the use of high item drop rate on your character. (410 drop rate, for example).
  • It appears to be possible to steal humanity with Dark Hand is equipped in your left hand by switching equips in the right, and then using L2. More specifically, switching from Dragonslayer Great Bow to Darkmoon Tin Catalyst in the right hand. (Unconfirmed).

See Humanity Farming for a list of NPCs, and how much humanity each one holds.

Virgin: Joins dorkwraiths to use dark hand as a weapon, gets killed by hosts anyways.

Chad: Gets darkhand as random drop but uses it as a shield, enjoys funny distortion effect.

      • Anonymous

Using it as a shield is not a very good idea because of the abysmal (pun intended) stability, except in one case: magic! Not only does it block most magic projectiles completely for some reason, it can even block the 4Kings' death waves without spending stamina at all! There are better elemental shields for fire and lightning, but if you gonna face some mages, this is a lightweight and decent option. Especially for the 4Kings battle... Oh, the irony!

I just tried to farm Slabs from the Wraiths in New Londo. Had no luck but instead got this. Didn't even knew they drooped these. Funny that I got the rarer drop instead.

Finding this on my first pass through New Londo in this Playthrough - 'punching only' challenge.

It *does* qualify by the criteria I outlined, so I guess I have to go serve Kaathe now

I tried it on the dude right next to the firelink shrine bonfire and it did nothing no damage and no humanity. Did I do something wrong

Of course, I be pissed off too when I'm hammering my hammer then suddenly someone grab me and stop my work. Others don't care, they don't have anything to do, just standing.

Bring down their hp with the dragon headstone, then use the r2 on this baby when they stop and chug. Great for free humanity in low level invasions, and more fun then the glitch.

Just something to note, you can use magic shield and strong magic shield on the dark hand. In case you wanted to use this as a shield for some reason.

I am here to repent, I stole 89 humanity from an afk havel twink in firelink shrine (SL 20 twink invasions on my part) but that's how I got my 99 soft humanity and made everyones day worse for the next few weeks before an actually good player spanked me...

                      • Anonymous

I was working towards gathering 50 humanity to reach rank 3 in the Darkwraiths and I ended up invading an AFK host who I drained exactly 50 humanity from before they came back. Jackpot!

get a full egghead on your head invade someone and do a kick attack then use r2 on people who think it can infect them and you'd sure give them a heart attack lmfao...and people think darkwraiths with fancy skeletal masks are evil ha now this is downright evil

                          • Anonymous

It looks great and is very effective ... when the Darkwraiths use it. The version for the player is unfortunately as stable as a damp handkerchief.

Recommended block usage: Magic attacks. The Dark Hand will basically take a dump on mage, pyro, or cleric builds. Specifically, Fire Surge can be blocked without any stamina loss. How's that for the worst stability 'shield' in the game?

Recommended NPCs to suck Humanity out of: Reah, Laurentius, Griggs, Lautrec, Petrus, and human Vince/Nico. Logan and Dusk both have no Humanity.

Here's a general criteria for Humanity stealing - it will only work on player models. This means that it won't work on giants, blacksmiths, egg dudes, or any entity that isn't using the player model. Otherwise, it will damage, and likely aggravate, whatever entity it is attempted on.

Innocent question: how do you use dark hand to succ humanity in pvp?? I mean the animation is sooo slow they can just roll away, not to mention the small hitbox...?

                                    • Some of you guys are going to hate me for this. I'm not a big fan using the dark hand. The good things about it is the humanity steal and most blocking stats(except for stability). Depending what darkwraith covenant level you are if your at the maximum level, it'll be a great humanity generator. The stats of the shield is phenomenal but the stability is the worst. When comparing to other well round shields like the grass crest shield, the dark hands stability is the lowest out of the all round shields. Sure it's light, but same goes with other shields. The main reason why I don't like the dark hand is it appears many times on my darkwraith farm. This kinda infuriates me when the dark hand shows up. I forgot to mention about the durability. It's durability is 999 which is good. But like I said, it's abysmal stability of 30 and my personal frustration of getting it to much are two of my biggest problems. I'm sorry but it's my opinion.

I hit people so many times right in the face with it even when being on the same floor like described here and yet 90% of my hits don't grab them. Only small damage numbers. And when i finally get one, they don't even have any humanity at all. lmao

"Should we make them drop their set or sword?" "Nah let's have them drop their non physical magic power instead"

I wrote it on "Ring of Fog" page, but guess i'll better write it here too. The thing is, Ring of Fog also makes your dark hand invisible. Quoting myself from other page: "This includes the shield mode, so it'll look like you deflect hits with your bare hand. Besides, it may also help to trick other players, since there will be no way to tell that you have dark hand equipped. It DOESN'T make succ invisible, however. Have no idea if this will work in remaster, but it surely does in non-remastered version on PC. Can someone try this in remastered version?"

Does anyone else think its retarded that you can't parry with the Dark Hand like you could in the original Dark Souls? I'd rather parry with it, off hand, than bother trying to time a grab personally, am I the only one?

                                              • Anonymous

best feeling in dark souls remastered? being a sunbro and slamming the succ attack on an invader. now their invasion is essentially an instant loss, unless they kill the host, which just brings them back to whatever humanity they had before.

                                                • Anonymous

I'm not sure if I understand how you do the dark hand grab with it in your left hand. I wouldn't try to parry with the dark hand so I wish they made it that the L1 would be block BUT the L2 would the dark hand grab. I don't want to have to keep the dark hand in my second right hand slot. That's reserved for a bow or catalyst.
