With the reqs and scaling it was probably meant as an ng+ weapon. I however got this myself on my first playthrough since Smough was easier to kill first since he was so stationary. Dunno if others had the same experience.

I think it’s lame that people will pvp two handing murakumo with DMB, and complain about the stat requirement for this spear.
- Anonymous
I love this game bro but what the **** are those stat reqs

The 2h strong attack takes longer than the longest windup attack in Elden Ring. Literally you could theoretically be backstabbed TWICE in the time it takes to finish. I don't know of any boss where it is practical to use. I question the competence of From.

Those stat requirements are insanity. Elden ring spoiled us lol

Why the hell does this require so much strength in DS1? I did a Dragonslayer Spear build in DS2 recently, and it was really fun. It only requires 16 strength there so it's extra friendly for dex-faith builds who don't want to pump strength too much. Of course DS1 came out first, but I think 16 strength is a more reasonable strength requirement to wield the weapon. 24 str and dex to wield the DSS in DS1 is not very helpful for dex faith builds. A dex faith build already has to distribute their leveling so much that having to get 24 strength feels like a big handicap.

You can use this spear on a quality build in the meta. otherwise go for all three stats, the special attack is very effective with the leo ring capable of oneshots

I love this weapon but hate trying to run around ornstein to kill smough first

"Ornstein reappeared as The Old Dragonslayer in DS2." uhh not outright confirmed anywhere within game or otherwise as far as I know.

I don't care if the demon spear might deal a bit more damage, this thing still kicks ass and looks amazing while doing it.
Also it was a very fitting weapon to finally kill the hellkite dragon with.

i was thinking about using this weapon but de 24 str requirement kind of a deal breaker to me. Full dex build here and thinking about getting wotg

I wonder if Ornestein got the spear by cutting a dragon's tail

I just found out that this spear has more deflection resistance than other spears. For example, you can hit a medium shield while one-handing the spear and it won't bounce off like other spears. This means that two-handing this spear will allow you to poke at greatshields for free.

For anyone curious about this weapon on a faith build, with minimum str/dex to 2h the spear.
With:
16 strength
24 dexterity
48 faith
Spear does 142 + 112 in physical
Plus 97 + 84 in lightning damage
For a total of 436
I'm not super impressed with the damage but it might be a decent second weapon for enemies that are resistant to magic. It has long reach so 2 handing it isn't too difficult.
Any weapon with sunlight blade will probably outdamage it by a ton, but since there's only one cast of sunlight blade it's not bad for areas like the Duke's archives

Can you complete the game with just this weapon even if it does a low damage?

The page says requirements and bonuses, but it doesnt even have the stat bonuses? Is this because im on mobile or does the page need updating?

Just sold my +5 spear to Frampt by accident.... I´m such an idiot.

is not effective against dragons at all. does way way way way less damage to dragon types than any other standard weapon. a fully upgraded standard weapon did over 200 damage on this one dragon, and a fully upgraded dragonslayer spear did 64 or something...waaat? it is both lightning (said to be effective against dragons) and it has "Dragon Slayer" in its name...the description even says that it is effective against dragons...is this massive trolling on the devs side? Lightning seriously seems to do diddly squat against dragons.

This weapon is basically a bonus for dex faith builds who levelled their strength to use a Murakumo. So yeah, pretty niche.

If using the Leo ring, does the counter damage also apply to the lightning?
- Anonymous
I love this weapon but the stat requirements are pretty outrageous

The lightning spear in Sen's can be un-infused to make the required +10 thrusting weapon needed to make the DSS. No need to upgrade a weapon for it.

Orstein IS named after Leo Ornstein?!?! No fking way! Every time I heard the name "Ornstein", I'd think of Leo Ornstein. That's SO cool that he's named after one of the great pianist-composers of the 21st century.

You can ascend a +10 rapier as well. At least for me it is available for +10 Ricard's rapier.

Anyone know how the faith scaling works in this weapon? Does it boost the lightning damage? It doesn’t have magic damage for Faith scaling to boost, so does it go into the lightning?
- Anonymous
Why'd it get smaller in DS3? It looked better when it was bigger than a Greatsword in DS1.
- Anonymous
This weapon isn't enchantable. I hope somebody changes what the wikipage says.

Best to leave strength and faith at minimum, as the best scaling comes from dex. Then stuff points into strength as the strength scaling is preferential as it's also physical, and lastly put the least into faith, as it yields the smallest returns. Or better yet, ditch this weapon and choose a buff-able spear with 40 dex and 40 faith, put lightning blade on it, and you will do way more damage in both physical and electric.

one of 3 weapons for a faith build make it end game scaling. ' miyazaki. srsly. 24 24 to use B in dex and faith u are looking at a SL 80 minimum weapon. only fun spear in the game, make sure spears suck to use

For a maxed-out build would you be wanting somewhere like 30/30/30 str/dex/int, or more like 40/40/40?

if you manage to hit the 2nd part of the heavy attack it sends players flying
