Laurentius of the Great Swamp is a Character in Dark Souls
Information
He is a Pyromancy trainer rescued from The Depths. Was apparently being held captive by an undead chef.
- To find him, enter the Depths through the iron door unlocked with the Key to Depths right after Capra Demon. Go down the stairs until you reach the area with the hollows and tables, and drop down through the archways, then follow the hallways until you reach the area with the Butcher who is waiting on an elevated platform; if you reach a closed wooden door, go the other way. Kill him, and move into the room full of barrels. He is in a barrel in the corner when you find him. It is recommend to roll through the barrels to free him, since this will not cause him to become aggressive.
- After being rescued Laurentius can be found by taking the first stairway up from Firelink Shrine and turning left, he will be sitting on the ground.
- If you hadn't chosen Pyromancer at the start, he will give you a Pyromancy Flame and offer to teach you pyromancies. He can also upgrade the flame using souls.

Encounters
- Encountered in The Depths shortly after the first butcher mini-boss and guarded by another butcher. Found stuck in a barrel.
- After talking to him in The Depths, he will return to Firelink Shrine.
- If you speak to him after meeting the Daughter of Chaos in Quelaag's nest or speaking with the witch in Blighttown or possessing one of the Chaos pyromancies, he will ask you where you found such awesome pyromancy. If you agree to reveal to him what you know, the next time you come back to Firelink Shrine, he will be gone.
- After he leaves Firelink Shrine, you may encounter Laurentius in the swamp at Blighttown where he will start attacking you whether you attacked him or not. (Laurentius is likely Hollow during this encounter).
Drops
- 1000 Souls
Note
- You can also drain him using the Dark Hand for 5 humanity. One at a time with normal dark hand. All 5 in one hit while member of Dark Wraith covenant at +3. Doing so will not make him hostile.

I thought I'd be returning the favor of teaching me Pyromancy by saying yes. If only I knew. I'm sorry my dear friend

Love the man and his accent. Don't you dare tell him that pyromancy location.

Love the man and his accent. Don't you dare let him go hollow.

Why won't Laurentius improve my pyromancy flame? I started as Pyromancer and the option simply isn't there.

love how the most forgettable character in the game isn't the most forgettable character in the game because of one line, impressive.

My lore theory is that the corpse where you find poison mist is his teacher he was talking about who was still in the great swamp

The tattered set and the poison mist pyromancy is found right around the left side on a body after killing him and reloading at the near by bonfire, likely is him

Everyone pour one out for my boy Laurentius. Said goodbye to him today knowing full well what would happen and I put myself through the uncomfortable walk across Blighttown's swamp just to put him out of his misery. He did almost no damage and I killed him in two hits. Rest in peace Laurentius you were my best friend

"What, that pyromancy? Nah it's a secret. You're a great teacher btw. Have a great day Laurentius."

Accidentally hit him while trying to "zoom" the binoculars on examining his face because fricking C.Warrior addressed him as an old man. And he doesn't look that old, or maybe this guy is like Bruno who' still looking sharp at 50

At one time he said
"Ey where are you going bro wait!"
And when you turn back he said something like
"It was just a joke" haha

this guy and solaire became Gloriously Incandescent in my world, they found their peace and happiness because of all of the NPCs they and Artorias/Sif deserve it the most after all their struggles

"be safe friend, and dont you dare go hollow". best quote in the game.

Laurentius and Solaire are my favourite characters, dang, but both of them will be kind of sad by the end.

would've been useful if you included the cost of upgrading the pyromancy flame...

When I first played the game for the first time I got to the part where you tell him about the chaos flame. After I tell him about it He says one final time don’t you dare go hollow. Fast forward a couple of hours later I go back to blighttown to go get the lord soul in izalith. In blighttown I see a light on the other side of the area. I said what the hell and when to see what it was. To my surprise here comes laurentius charging at me. In my picking I kill him. I screamed NO because I thought he was coming over to talk with me. I looked up laurentius quest line to see what I would have missed. I then learn that you have to kill him for his quest to end. Man laurentius was easily one best characters in ds because he was different from the others. He would always said don’t you dare go hollow. Damn now I’m sad after writing this :(

Honestly my second or third favorite character in the game. Solaire and the Blacksmith in Undead Parish being one and two. I cant stand watching all these dudes go hollow though, its so damn sad

Personally I find it odd he goes hollow. Most every character in game go hollow when they lose their sense of purpose and/or destiny, I wonder what sense of reason he lost in Blight Town. I’m going to guess he got hopelessly lost in his search for the mother’s of pyromancy and succumbed to a brooding despair which caused him to hollow. That and a combination of dying over and over from poisoning perhaps.

what happened i didn't talk to anyone in blighttown or daughter of chaos why he disappear while i was gathering souls on my NG account and when in came back he was gone?

This man is stupid, you have fire magic but cant escape a WOODEN BARREL?
When you first meet him at Firelink after rescuing him from the depths, he will ask you whether or not you "find the magics unsavoury". No matter which option you pick (yes or no) he will be disappointed and you'll have to talk to him again to get the pyromancy flame and spells. It's really strange...

Having never really explored his quest line at all, what would happen if you don't reveal what you know - does he stay at Firelink Shrine or go down to Blighttown anyway?
I'm curious cause I've never done it, but what if you do tell him that you find his pyromancy "unsavory" or whatever? Does he just end the conversation or will he refuse to train you from then on?

I wonder why he goes hollow at all, really. In the wikidot wiki it states that an undead normally goes hollow when they no longer have a purpose or mission of some sort, which is why your character never fully hollows. It also uses this to explain why andre has been around for so lingx saying hes clung to his craft as a smith. But this guy went hollow from searching for something, and trying to increase his prowess with pyromancies, why would that cause him to go hollow? Logan also goes hollow, presumably also from searching for power. Why? Andre has done a simillar thing in requesting embers from the player, yet he doesnt go hollow. Perhaps its obsession that caused them to go hollow, but wouldnt it be safe to say andre is obsessed with smithing and getting more embers...? Doesnt add up to me.

"If you agree to reveal him what you know the next time you come back to Firelink Shrine, he will be gone." That includes quitting the game and loading it with the player character in Firelink Shrine.

Okay, so i freed Laurentius from his barrel, didint actually speak to him and kept going along my way until i got to Anor Londo. Decided i wanted some pyromancy, so i go to firelink shrine and hes not there, went back to where i first found him in the barrel and hes not there either. Any idea where hes at now? I never spoke to him to send him to firelink shrine nor did i have the conversation about pyromancy with him to send him to blighttown and i cant seem to find anything online about it. Just wondering were my fire-boy is at.

I though if i hadn't gone to Blighttown i could have answered "Yes" to his question, which he asked me about the pyromancy flame that i got in the first playthrough. Unfortunately he still left.

DOH now i gotta go to blight town swamp to upgrade my flame :(
- Anonymous
When I told him about the chaos pyromancy, I thought it would be all well and good, but I was genuinely sad when he left. There was just something amazing about him, and I don't think I have the heart to go and kill him
- Anonymous
if you talk to him enough he'll explain the pyromancy flame, but will apologize if you start as a pyromancer because "you already know this"
- Anonymous
Can confirm that he is hollow when you send him to search for the new pyromancy

Crestfallen - pretentious @sshole
Petrus - faithless sack of sh!t
Griggs - d!ckless wanker
After Lautrec leaves Firelink Shrine the only half-decent NPC there is Laurentius. I thought I'd be doing him a favour by telling him of Quelana. This game is woeful asf.
I don't want him to go hollow, so is there any benefit to saying yes vs no mechanically? Do you need to say yes to advance some other quest? Basically, is there any reason not to say no to him about the chaos pyromancy?
