A compact, highly available weapon. It's usable at SL1 in the early game, doesn't need Scaling to hit hard and can go +15 on nearly any build for no drawbacks. If you have the weight to spare then look no further.
It's also one of the few weapons that can viably go Crystal. 310-340 non-split AR is no joke and you can hoard them in NG if you really wanted to.

Pros:
-Low requirements
-Acquired early
-Very strong for a long period of the game
-Can use shield
-Same range as black bow
-Target lock is fairly far
Cons:
-Aims with target, which is inaccurate due to the bad camera of the game
-Reload time
-Needs binoculars or aim with bow for long shots

Wait, do the undead soldiers wielding swords really have a chance to drop crossbows? That sounds far-fetched to me. I would've assumed only the ones holding actual crossbows would do that (because...that makes sense).

wow this is the most empty discussion thingy I've seen on this wiki

I've been looking over weapon damage in a calculator and I'm pretty sure that this weapon right here is the best divine weapon for low STR/non-FTH builds to deal with skeletons in the catacombs. Divine wrecks the scaling of weapons AND splits the damage making most weapons divine weapons do pitiful damage especially in NG+, but not this weapon.
