Bonewheel Shield

Wheel Skeleton (Bonewheels) is an Enemy in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. Enemies are hostile creatures that respawn when players rest at a Bonfire or upon death. Special enemies that do not respawn are classified as Bosses, Mini Bosses or Invaders.

Wheel Skeleton (Bonewheels) Information

These skeletons wear a big wooden-spiked wheel, allowing them to roll towards you at high speed, thus inflicting a large amount of damage if in their way. The first encounter with these annoying foes takes place at the bottom of The Catacombs, just before the entrance of the lair of Pinwheel. Can also be found in the Painted World of Ariamis. When killed, there is a small chance that they'll drop a Bonewheel Shield.

Drops

Attacks

  • High-speed rolling. When they see you, they jump and roll towards you, inflicting a large amount of damage and depleting your stamina bar very quickly.

Strategy

These things are positively horrid, and capable of dealing utterly ridiculous damage. If blocked they may not stop spinning until your stamina is completely gone, leaving you defenseless. If one hits you, you will not be allowed to roll or raise your shield until you die and respawn, or he clips off of your character and rolls past you.
Despite their low HP, skeletons wheels can be a serious threat as they can catch you in their wheels, depleting your stamina very quickly, leading to a certain death. Do not attack them in group, and try to lure them into a wall by dodging. Don't use your shield unless you have a very strong one.

  • In The Catacombs, death against them can be very frustrating if you don't pay attention because they are located at the very end of the level, just before the Pinwheel's lair (they are approximativly 4 or 5). Also, be wary of the Black Knight wielding an axe in the area if you don't have yet defeated him (combat against multiple wheel skeletons and the black knight at the same time can be very tricky). Try to lure them out one at a time towards the narrow corridor you came in where they can hit walls and stop rolling, giving you the opportunity to slay them as they are unable to attack when standing up (combustion is a good way to one-shot them). You can also try to shoot them at distance with a bow, the best location to do this being the small room where you fight the Axe-wielding Black Knight (they won't be able to reach you). If you don't want to fight them, you can also try to dash towards the white fog, just be careful to avoid them and not get caught in their way.

Alternative Strategy

  • Whenever possible, roll to avoid them as they close in and then attack them once they run into a wall and stop spinning. A decent strategy is to fight them one at a time and use a shield/spear combination to attack with your guard up. Warning: the large open room at the bottom of the Catacombs holds about seven of these things, and if you enter it without first killing the Black Knight in the room above he will drop down and attack you from behind while you deal with the Bonewheels. The ones in The Painted World of Ariamis are commonly hidden behind breakaway walls at the bottom of the well, and will attack with very little warning.
  • It's possible to block their rolling with a good shield like an Eagle Shield+10 or Hollow Soldier Shield+10 and decent stamina (although if you can avoid it then avoid it).
  • Equipping the Slumbering Dragon Ring below the Painted World will help you identify them, making them a little more predictable. Combining the Fog Ring and the Slumbering Dragon Ring should allow a player to get within spell range (specifically Homing Soulmass range) without being noticed by the Wheel Skeletons.
  • Possessing a high vitality, poise and medium roll speed would make the fight almost trivial, simply wear any light armor such as Knight Set, Elite Knight Set or Dark Set and then equip Wolf Ring and Havel's Ring, it would make the Wheel Skeletons harder to stunlock you with their rolls while you can land a hit easily.

        • Now I suddenly realized a funny thing, you see these are the *Wheels* before a boss who is also a *Wheel*, a Pin wheel, pretty fun hahaha god I hate my life

In between the bit in the catacombs where they are and Pinwheel's arena there's an invisible checkpoint that they can't cross. If you can run past them and dodge their rolls (easier said than done, I know), they'll all bunch up at the checkpoint uselessly trying to roll at you. If you have a weapon with long reach or magic they're easy pickings at that point. I'm usually able to take out 5 of them at a time this way

I absolutely despise these guys in the painted world, everywhere else in the game they're great but down in the "painted sewers ", they're despicable. Every attack I make gets clipped by the wall and leaves me open to getting beybladed

I hate saying this but I love these dudes. Yeah they're annoying, but I find them goofy. Think there should have been more skeleton types.

Isn’t there a way that you can lift the curse on them and the wheels will come off? I remember doing that on my friends console a while back and she was really glad that I removed it by lifting the curse on them but I can’t remember what I did to lift the curse. Does anyone know about that?

Here is the only way to kill the wheel skeleton in the tunnel in painted world: wear ring of fog and use great combustion. Stand at intersecrions dodge at ghe last second and run after ghem. This is the hardest encounter from software has ever conjured. We no hit runners avoid the annex for this reason :)

I'm at my first playthrough, and I thought from all the memes I saw about these guys that they would have been a better foe. I just block them with my greatshield while they're spinning, standing with my back on the wall, then once they're done spinning and bump on the wall I one-shot them with my halberd, and collect the easiest +400 souls of my life.

I can see them being extremely dangerous if you have no shield or if you got a lighter build than mine though.

My entire time in lower catacombs and tomb of giants was literally just sneaking past them with hidden body and soundless ring. Thank **** for metal gear in teaching me that I don't always have to fight my way through

First time playing and I couldn't understand why these were so hated in memes, found them so easy, falling attacked to kill four of them by aggroing them below the black knight room. And for the ground combat for the rest and again on the way out I'd accidentally made the perfect build as per the Wolf Ring Havel Ring Elite Knight suggestion above, Zwei'd them dead while they hit me but didn't stun.

If you've cleared the Black Knight (and better the Undead Mage on the right side of the bottom of the cliff) you can stand on the ledges just before dropping down. There you van snipe with Fireball atleast 4 of em' before finishing the other 2/3 (didn't test with Combustion). You need to stand very near to the cliff and prevent yourself from falling down while casting, or else suffer the bone zone.

These guys are rage inducing for a lightweight character, and running isn't a guaranteed strategy, as they can roll faster than you can run.

If anything in DS1 most embodies the "haha, **** you!" of FromSoft games, it's these guys.

You know how there are those playthroughs with “those” enemies? Ya know like there is at least one enemy that you have to kill dozens of just to get their drop? I’ve had a few in my current playthrough, man-serpents, banshees, drakes, but these guys took the cake, I wouldn’t be surprised if I had killed 200 of them before I got the bonewheel shield from them, heck I’ve killed every Black Knight before the Kiln and other than the shield I’ve gotten all their drops, even two swords and two halberds, and there are less than 10 of them before the Kiln, as I’ve written this I got the shield minutes ago so I’m here just to kinda vent and see if anyone else has had the same problem with any enemies. Reply to this if you had an enemy that you had to kill in droves to get a drop, it would be cool to tell me the enemy and the drop (assuming they drop more than one thing).

if you fight these things with a wood shield or GCS then i got one thing to say, welcome to Satan's backyard. these things are far FAR worse than pinhead the joke so what if they were the bossfight instead? yeah you just have to fight past a giant bonewheel whilst hundreds of minis swarm you like the Nito bossfight

                                            Step 1: Cast Karmic Justice
                                            Step 2: Hold Block
                                            Step 3: Walk Towards Wheel
Step 4: Laugh And Repeat As Necessary

                                            • Fighting them in the one place in the catacombs where there's about four of them. Drop down where the knight is, he glitched out for me so this was easy, and lighting spear. Praise the ****ing sun

                                              • The bonewheel skeletons are absolute bonkers whenever they located. They become fast when they roll and can do a serious amount of dps. However, my worst experience from them is ng6+. From being spikey wheels to rolling chainsaws or buzzsaws in ng6+. No matter what armor you have, they can heavenly damage you in the playthrough cap or ng6+(I'm kinda tired saying this.) Anyways, if you don't have armor with poise and get trapped, there's no chances of survival. These enemies are ridiculous when they get in groups. So that's why I hate these stupid skele's.

                                                • saying "this is broken/op!!!" has totally lost its meaning cause people say everything in dark souls is broken but these lads are truly worthy of such a title

                                                  • Anonymous

I use a Black Knight halberd and using its long-range melee attack it allows me to kill the bone Wheels with comfort. My strategy which works 80 to 90% of the time is to strike dual wielding the Black Knight halberd with its R1 attack although this attack has to be done the moment after they're jump to roll and before they hit you. I have mastered this technique I wish you all good luck with that information.

I ran into these guys around level 38. I learned their dirty little ways. I'm now level 45 and growing. Farm hard, run like a weenie, Zweihander them for fat stacks and become both good and swole.
