The Crystal Lizard is a special Enemy in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. It does not respawn after being killed and it does not try to attack you.

Crystal Lizard Description

These lizards are located in various parts of Dark Souls. They are quite small, but are noticeable because of the blue crystals on their backs. Once they see you they'll attempt to run away and will then disappear entirely unless you chase them down and kill them or take them out with ranged attacks. They're worth finding and killing because they always have rare or semi-rare titanite on them, that you will receive upon killing them.

Drop

* Lizards in the The Great Hollow are the only ones with a chance to drop a Titanite Slab. There are 10 total lizards there.

Strategy

  • The easy way to catch and kill the lizards - just stay in front of the place where it appeared (don't worry if it escaped). Quit the game and load again. Be ready for a quick strike!
An alternative is to use the Hidden Body sorcery or the Ring of Fog (combined with Slumbering Dragoncrest ring) to greatly reduce the distance that they notice you and attempt to flee.

Weird, I remember reloading just in front of them, but now 3 years later I have the problem that they only respawn if I quit the game or enter a new area and reload.

The slab is nowhere near a 10-20% drop in the great hollow. I backed up a save file and running through an area that has 5 of them. I got 0 in approximately 15 min.

A creature inspired by the Carbuncles of Chilote Mythology.

"Carbuncle is a legendary species of small animal in South American folklore, specifically in the mining folklore of northern Chile. The animal is said to contain riches of some sort; in some versions it is a precious stone that gives fortune and good luck to its owner."

"According to the myth, someone who sees the carbunclo may find treasures via the following careful steps: First, a lasso or similar objects is to be thrown towards the carbunclo as to trap it. The carbunclo will respond by vanishing along with the object."
          - (Note: Additional steps for acquiring treasure here include: Having to dig a magic hole, and then have a crazy cat lady repeatedly throw a black cat into said hole. This somehow produces the treasure. IMO: FromSoft's idea works much better.)

"The mirror in the carbuncle's head is said to be akin to two lights observed by Spanish explorers in the Strait of Magellan. Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés identified these lights with the gemstones hidden in the brains of dragons."

didn't know there were that many in the great hollow, but i'd probably rather die irl than f around in that place chasing lizards

I noticed that the lizards are either bugged, or there is a mechanic that they arent guarenteed to respawn on the next reload of you missed it. I've had to re-load/ homeward out sometimes 3 times before a lizard showed itself sometimes.

Okay so i just some how glitched the lizard in the catacombs tunnel with the spike statues. I missed it the first time, ran back to the bonfire thinking that would respawn it, nope. Had to relog. So i did and it came back but i missed it just barely. So i relog again however now theres two lizards? i managed to kill one of them but the other one escaped, reloged and 1 of the lizards respawned, so i proceeded to kill that one and got identical drops. Figured i would reloged again just to see if it would happen again, sadly not. But i have a feeling this could be a hell of an exploit if this can be repeated some how.

Should be noted they can drop slabs and that 10 humanity+ cgs increases the frequency of rarer drops, tested in great hollow on multiple characters

If you're really fast and good at jumps, The Great Hollow has 14 Crystal Lizards. Most I've managed to kill on my pyro, 12 on knight. Tips: caves & ledges. Fog & Slumber rings add drop agro from some. Pre-break all twigs so they won't hear you, clear the hollow between bonfire and ladders. Dying and logging resets lizards. Don't die.
