Knight Lautrec is a Character in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. This NPC plays an interesting role in the Firelink Shrine, leading to its deactivation.
Encounters
- First found in the Undead Parish, locked up in a prison cell. To find him, go up the stairs to the right of the elevator. You'll encounter an Balder Knight, then a room full of Hollows and a Channeler. In the left corner from where you entered, there's another passage with another Balder Knight. At the top of this passage is a broken door. Break the door to reveal the room containing Lautrec. Free him, and he'll give you a Sunlight Medal as a reward once you get back to Firelink Shrine and speak to him. His location at Firelink is down the curved stairs right next to the bonfire.
- The Mystery Key unlocks the cell, and can be found in the Undead Parish on a corpse. The Master Key can also be used.
- If you choose not to free him, he will find his own way out after you beat the Bell Gargoyle boss. He will not offer you a Sunlight Medal, nor can he be summoned as a phantom for the boss-fight.
- Once you have finished the Undead Parish, go back to Firelink Shrine and you’ll find Lautrec sitting on the ground in front of Anastacia’s cave, fire keeper of Firelink Shrine.
- If Lautrec is still at Firelink after Reah has departed for the Catacombs, and Petrus has returned, he will offer you a 'tip' for your soul level x100 souls. (e.g. SL33=3300 for the tip). The 'tip' is that Reah's companions fled or turned hollow, and she is now alone in the Catacombs. In Lautrecs own devious words, "A nubile cleric would be replete with humanity. *laughter*". After buying this tip, he says he got it from a 'fleeing old man', and that 'all his trinkets and robes won't help him now'.
- Lautrec will stay in Firelink Shrine until you have either rung both bells, or taken the Fire Keeper Souls from the Undead Parish and Blighttown, whichever occurs first. Once you have done either of the above, he will kill Anastacia and disappear (regardless if he was freed from his cell or not). However, that is not the end. When you return to firelink, check Anastacia’s cave to find her dead body and some items. Amongst the items is a Black Eye Orb which you can use to find Lautrec again, and reclaim Anastacia’s stolen soul.
- It is possible, perhaps even recommended, to kill him when you first free him. He won't drop his armour, but will drop 5 Humanity, 1000 souls and Ring of Favor and Protection, a very powerful ring that is useful the entire game. He is not too hard to kill; he moves slowly and when he rolls he leaves himself wide open to a backstab. Additionally he has no shield. Watch out for his power attack though, it ignores your shield. An extremely easy way to kill him at Firelink is to approach him where he sits, and kick him. He will be knocked backwards onto the edge but will not immediately turn aggressive. A second kick will propel him off the side to his death. Quit and reload and the 5 humanity and ring will be sitting there.
- Killing him early will end this sidequest, and you will miss your chance to obtain both his and Anastacia's armor sets.
Summoning
- Once rescued, Lautrec can be summoned to assist in the Bell Gargoyle fight. His summon sign can be found on a ledge across from the ladder below the fog gate to the Bell Gargoyle. NOTE: In order for his summon sign to appear, you will have to rescue Lautrec, then return to Firelink and accept his reward which is a Sunlight Medal, then return and you will find his summon sign on the ledge. Also don't forget to be in Human form.
- You can summon Phantom Knight Lautrec in The Depths to help you fight the Gaping Dragon. His summon sign can be found on the opposite side of the pillar where Knight Solaire's summon sign is. (just above the the boss fog gate)
Invading Lautrec with Black Eye Orb:
- Note: Invading Lautrec is the same as invading another player. You cannot use Estus flasks to heal yourself, so be prepared!
- After obtaining the Black Eye Orb from Anastacia's body, proceed to Anor Londo. When you reach Anor Londo, make your way through the area to the boss fight with Ornstein and Smough. In the large room just outside the room where that fight takes place, the Black Eye Orb will begin to vibrate. That is your hint on how to find Lautrec. Once you have cleared that room of the enemy so that it is safe, use the Black Eye Orb to invade Lautrec’s realm. When you do, you’ll face Lautrec and two of his comrades in a fierce battle. If you have poisoned arrows you can kill all 3 poisoning them from the point where you appeared, just shoot them and watch their health go down. All you need do is defeat Lautrec himself to win, but killing the other two will grant additional souls. Be careful, as Lautrec's shotel's heavy attacks ignore your shield and must be evaded. Defeating him will grant you 5 Humanity, Ring of Favor and Protection, Anastacia's Fire Keeper Soul, as well as a Souvenir of Reprisal, an item ordinarily only obtained by members of Blade of the Dark Moon.
- After you have killed Lautrec, you can either return to Firelink Shrine and visit Anastacia’s cave to return her soul, which will bring her back to life and re-enable the Bonfire of Firelink Shrine. Or you can use her Fire Keeper Soul to upgrade your Estus flask at one of the other Firekeepers. Be careful that using the soul to upgrade the flask or other reasons will result in the impossibility to revive the firelink shrine firekeeper and bonfire.
- After defeating him you can find his corpse, outside the chamber of the princess in Anor Londo, containing his entire suit of armor.
- Killing him without following the above will only grant you the Ring of Favor And Protection and 5 Humanity, you will not be able to obtain his or Anastacia's armor.
- His two companions in Anor Londo are one of the three sealers of New Londo and an NPC wearing Soldier Armor (without helmet) and wields a Wooden Shield and Spear. (regular spear)

After he helped me with gargoyles and gaping boy it felt wrong to kill him, especially that he's a really neat npc, I like him. Not like I cared about the mute girl but I needed firelink bonfire so much! If I'll ever play ng+ I'm gonna let him be.

lautrec's a good guy. he's part of a failed plot against the gods. he kills anastasia because there can't be any undead if there aren't any firekeepers. what lead to him being captured in the first place? he was going to be delivered to seath, but WHY was he there? he probably killed the firekeeper and was waiting for another, such as rhea. how'd he get there? via andre. andre is being watched by a black knight (atop the tower). why were such powerful enemies like black knights of all things posted around somewhere as weak as the undead burg? they were watching for conspirators. how do you think havel got captured in the first place? the broken bridge. lautrec watched the plot fail, and when he heard that seath accidentally kidnapped havel's wife, he knew he had to do something. once he killed anastasia, he moves on to anor londo to kill the firekeeper and reveal the illusion of Chest Ahead.

When I played Dark Souls for the first time, I thought he's gonna be our comrade untill the end, like Solaire, or other less obvious character like Crestfallen Warrior, who despite his attitude, is a friend, or retrospectively, like Siegmeyer and Patches.
I though he's just a "mysterious anime character" type who says things like: "Our futures are murky. Let's not be too friendly, now" to appear mysterious and edgy, but actually cares about protagonist and conciders them friend, like when he says: "Well, where have you been? I am glad to see you are safe"
Well... I didn't knew I was playing Dark Souls back then, shame he had to die by my hand, I really liked him, I loved those two boss-fights where you can summon both him and Solaire as fantoms and assemble an ultimate squad, I imagined he would have a pretty interesting questline where turns out he isn't as grim as he appears, and maybe even has some feelings for the protagonist... turned out he is even more grim than he appears, he's a bloody murderer.

Killing the gaping dragon will advance his dialogue so that you cannot get the tip about petrus and rhea. The sequence for this quest seems to be kill capra, go back to firelink to see rhea and company, wait until they leave, wait until just petrus returns, (all before picking up two fire keeper souls or ringing both bells) then you can get the tip, I find this to be the most obscure quest in the game, let me know if you agree.

He is easily killed with poison arrows if you dont run up and engage. To avoid errors or bugs its best to approach him just as he's about to die. All you have to do is avoid him and allow his dialog.

I went to the depth and went to new londo short cut first before picking the soul or killing quelaag. I went up and met him, he talked about changing his location soon. So I wanted to get his tips on Reah and Petrus, but even after Petrus went back alone I still can't get the tip from Lautrec, he just keeps talking about changing his location.

Imagine kicking him off the cliff and picking up his ring. He survived the fall, however, climbs up the slope in ragged and battered rags and constantly curses in sheer venom "Thief! Dirty miserable thief! He cheated on us. He stole what was ours. Our preciousss!"

Got sick of his parry so I found out you can cheese him and his buddies with the hawk ring and the dragonslayer greatbow from the bottom of the stairs in front of O&S without getting in aggro range. I haven’t tried it with any other bow, but I’m sure anything with similar range would be fine.

i invaded him, used my power within and kill the 2 dudes with him in one hit, but then when i make the last hit on lautrec in the same time i died from power within, the itens only droped when i respawn in the bonfire. I was never so fuc**ing scared off losing the ring lol

How far will his summoned phantom follow you? Is it possible to take his phantom from outside the gargoyles fight back to firelink shrine? I just wondered what would happen if you could do this and proceed to attack the real Lautrec... would the phantom join in, attack you or just disappear in a puff of paradox?

He disappears at random from his spot by the firekeeper. Just leave, go to another area or keep reloading Firelink and he should reappear.

So I attacked him in his dungeon cause the ring thing looked fun. I used the Zweihander strong attack to constantly knock him, giving me enough time to run away and recover. It also covers his dumb roll and doesn't need much spacing.
One day I'll spare Lautrec my trusty kicks and actually experience the satisfaction of clapping him in Anor Londo, but it's hard to ignore an easy way to get arguably the best ring in the game within the first half hour.

Killed spider waifu first and rang the bell and got the fire keeper soul from blight town. I didn’t even free Lautrec yet nor kill the gargoyles or get the fire keeper soul in parish. Yet he still escaped from his cell and killed anastacia. Is this a bug?

Ummm I decided to get all the extra goodies I could before starting the story line and that included getting the Fire Keeper Soul in New Londo and Blighttown. I had a flask +2 before starting Undead Burg. When I got the third Fire Keeper Soul I returned to Firelink once again to upgrade and she was already and when I picked up the belongings there was the Black Eye Orb.
I was thouroughly confused so I returned to Undead Paris and went up to his cell for the first time and he wasn't there! Door was still closed and all. What in the world!?

If you don't want to kick him off the cliff, equip a shortbow and wooden arrows. Shoot him in the head once, and he will stand up. Shoot him in the head a second time, and he will fall off the cliff.

Was pretty tough as a faith character in NG+. Ended up just power within dark beading him with the darkmoon catalyst.
Worked pretty well, did like 1700 damage in one shot. Tranquil walk of peace with wrath of the gods surprisingly wasn't very effect due to the mage.

My update here serves as rebuttal to "Invading Lautrec"....above claims that using multiple poison arrows to kill all 3 bad guys is NOT true, I have discovered you only get 1 shot off using your bow....as each bad guy will immediately split-up and move around making it nearly impossible to fire arrows of any type at them.....they stay on the move continuously...so why imply that they "can easily be killed", no they can't.....your write ups or assessments are not realistic. Quit offering "gamer" a small sense of hope. You must stay on the move running upstairs and staying "way ahead" of bad guys in order to get "any bow shots off". Hope your writer gets another job, his assessment is way off. Myself....I just threw multiple bombs at 2 of these creeps and "wasted them easily".

Hey, just wanted to let people know I had a (small) find, if you miss the opportunity to "tip" Lautrec for information (if you say "no" when he asks, you can't prompt it again from what I could see), go and talk to Oswald of Carim, he will tell you to talk to Lautrec, then the next time you see Lautrec he should offer the tip again. I did this just today as I was bummed I missed all the lore talk related to that from Lautrec and Petras, and from what I read on the net several people seemed to think if you miss the opportunity, there's no way to get it back

Ok weird glitch, I've managed to cheese kill him in his cell (jump attack zvihander or whatever it's called) and he dropped his loot, I can see it, problem is is he died out of reach and for some reason it won't let me unlock his cell door after he is dead, I have both master key and mystery key but there isn't even an option, I don't really need the humanity but permanently losing the df&p ring will suck majorly, is there any way to fix this? I've tried reloading with quits and firelink bonfire, nothing works, please help.

I started a new game. I went to blighttown immediately to get the chloranthy ring and the fire keeper soul. I did NOT kill Quelaag. I then went back to firelink, and proceeded as normal through the burg and parish. When I got to Lautrec's cage to free him, he was not there. The cage was closed, and I couldn't open it with the master key. There wasn't even a prompt.
I tried to quit/reload to fix it and nothing happened. I then just decided to kill the Gargoyles. When I got back to firelink shrine, Anastasia was dead. She dropped her normal loot. I have never seen this anywhere. If somebody can explain this, do so!

I recently picked up Dark souls, and am currently doing my first run with the master key. And well I learned the hard way that this golden asshole killing the fire keeper, is not triggered by defeating a boss like I original thought.

Can be defeated quite easily. Attack him once and he gets up on the edge of the cliff asking you if you are sure. Kick him and he falls to his death. Reload the game/exit area, go down below and get ring. easiest boss in the game.

I love this for some reason fun fact if you talk to him while the cleric team is in the catacomb he will tell you that they have gone hollow and the lady is now alone in the catacombs and if you go talk to the cleric that back from the catacombs he will know that you talk to Lautrec and he will show who he really is by tellings you that ''ma lady'' is defenseless and you can go do whatever you want whit her honestly those 2 are really evil (but I like it)

i freed lautrec them defeated gargoyles and talked to him at firelink. petrus and reah and co went down to the catacombs and petrus came back with his “lost m’lady*****. rescued reah and then talked to petrus and he gave me the “not worth her salt*****. lautrec isn’t at firelink anymore but anastacia is still alive? never seen this happen before and his is ng +23

first time playin souls here. i've just freed lautrec and beaten gargoyles, now i'm looking to clear lower burg. he's chillin in the firelink shrine so i have a perfect chance to kick him out now. is it recommended to do this in my first playthrough? the only difference i see is that i wont be able to obtain these two sets but i dont know yet if i will need them. i'm kinda worried about not being able to use bonfire here for a certain amount of time because with a lot of shortcuts to firelink shrine i found it as a great starting point to do things. and fap ring is a very juicy thing to get this early for me (i've already had havoc ring) so instead of looking to get this ring in the mid-end game locations i could get it now. what should i do?

I picked up the 2 fire keeper souls (from new londo ruins and blighttown), killed the moon butterfly and picked up the fire keeper soul that is under the bell gargoyles, because i picked it up or because i killed the moon butteefly before killing him the event got triggered and he killed the fire keeper in fire link : ( , Lautrec you f*cking asshole! Now i have to go to freaking Anor Londo to get the ring...
