Resistance is a Stat in Dark Souls

Resistance

Resistance primarily increases physical defense, fire defense, and poison resist.

  • Putting points in Resistance does not increase additional Magic or Lightning resistances beyond the standard increases granted for any level increase.
  • The consensus among Dark Souls players is that it is a waste of souls to level up this stat, as doing so doesn't provide enough benefits. If the player wants to mitigate damage, better alternatives would be to invest in Vitality (to increase Hit Points), or Endurance (to wear heavier, more protective armor while keeping dodge speed). Poison and Fire Defense can be more practically increased by wearing armor that is high in those values.
  • The root cause of Resistance's underwhelming utility is that defenses are also affected by your total level, not just Resistance, and the diminishing returns from both will stack, causing Resistance's effectiveness at higher levels to become negligible. While Poison resistance does not suffer from this double diminishing return effect, it is still more practical to equip gear with higher poison resists, as you will see the effects immediately.
  • Resistance is not factored into Soul Level for starting classes. Furthermore, starting with high resistance will not be detrimental towards creating an optimized build. This is the reason why the max level (99 points in all stats) for a class like the Wanderer with 12 resistance is 709, whereas the max level for the Sorcerer with 8 resistance is 713.

    • I started with a SL1 character and I have 40 resistance and 20 soft humanity(for defences) now,most attacks just barely scratch my character with 12 vit,seriously.

I can say it's a better stat compared to something like dex or luck. Of course it doesn't have much effect on its own but if you lvl it to 40 you'll see the results.

While resistance is a pretty bad stat, i wouldn’t exactly say its useless.

Good for naked/dragon stone builds, makes priscilla’s life hunt scythe incredibly strong cause you don’t have to worry about equipping the blood bite ring to combat the self bleed, and finally invading in blight town (it was still awful, but definitely allowed me to keep more pressure on hosts and less time munching on some moss)

Either way 98% of the builds in the game don’t need to even know this stat exists, but for those looking for something different or those that like the look of some of the lighter armors, try throwing some levels into it.

I think resistance is good for characters who don’t wanna wear much armour.

Advised by this site, until now I heeded no attention to resistance. BUT!

I have just played my first resistance build and it was great. Beat Ornstein and Smough first try at level 37 only wearing a hollow soldier waistcloth. (Fire-claymore does the job nicely at low str doublehanded)

I say resistance has its uses for creating characters by seasoned players. This time my character was deprived and leveled vit alongside resistance up to 31. Great game

once you level resistance up to 99, your character has so much fire defense that they survive linking the fire, and you unlock the true ending of the game where you marry gwyndolin and become the ultimate god with all the lord souls that you've collected

Unironically went hard in this stat because the idea of increasing my defences seemed great. It is. I like to use pure strength builds with heavy armour, so until I got that armour id put a couple points into resistance whenever it showed a reasonable increase. As someone who’s literally too lazy to swap gear to deal with poison/toxic, resistance allowed me to play through blightown without even knowing that it was THE blightown. I though it was just some lil swamp area.

Realistically, if you’re using a weapon that uses 2-3 stats for damage, then this is just too much of an ask on top of vitality and endurance.

If you happen to be playing a build that really only uses one or two damage stats, then I’d genuinely recommend tossing some points in here if you want to reduce damage further.

I really think this was a late addition to the game in order to give people having trouble with Blighttown at the very least a placebo effect to get through it. They could at least have thrown in a few weapons to scale with it to not make it a total waste.

                  Aight so hear me out:
Dragon covenant build (no armor) + pricillas scythe.

Would that be a good enough reason to finally touch this stat?

Yes, yes... we all know that this is a useless stat, but i always like having a bit of extra resistance early game if i take wanderer or pyromancer and will have the stat points to splurge on useless stuff. (I never take it above 15 though.)

Why? Because the defense helps a bit more in the first half of the game, where you're likely to not have upgraded armor due to lack of titanite for things other than weapons and shields... and there's plenty of fire and physical damage.
Even afterwards, later in the game where you do have good armor, not being poisoned/toxic'ed in one goddamn strike in heavy sets of armor is good, as i don't have to spend as much time mossing up and risk being hit in that time!
I'd still never take it above 15, but it's good to point out what use it may still have for convenience, and oh boy has it saved me plenty of time and moss... from people wielding poison, or from the floor of blighttown with the ring of poisonbite equipped.

Agree with other comments, making this raise poise would have just made it a requirement to level up to a certain number and limited builds and made everyone play the early game the same.

In that case I’d rather they make it a dump stat rather than say what they did with adaptability in ds2.

I think it's stupid you have to level this to max just to get a chance at the harder bosses such as pinwheel

                        • Anonymous

Hmm, If this would increase EVERY resistance stat and poise for every level...hmm, nahhh, Vitalität would still be better. But If this wouldnt increase the amount of souls you need to level up, or If this had a second "Soul Counter", then this would be actually viable. Imagine a naked dude with the poise of havels. Or Imagine a Havels with double poise. Either way, they shouldve done more with this stat.

I don't think resistance necessarily softcaps like the other stats do. Your defenses themselves cap. If you're level 1 and you put a point into resistance it will give you 3 defense but if you have 99 in every other stat, it will give you 0.

                              • Anonymous

A decent choice for Dragon Torso Stone and naked builds after all your other stats are optimized. Resistance also has uses for speedruns to Blightown first thing out of Firelink.

It's terrible for everyone else, so don't bother otherwise. For every point spent in Resistance you could be spending in Endurance so you can wear better armor to boost all your stats even higher.

It somehow seems to me that Miyazaki only introduced this skill to troll inexperienced players and trick them into wasting points.

so If i want to wear light amor or the one I will not change (fashion souls/challenge) and my vigor is 40 or 50 do I benifit from upgrading resistance?

                                    • Anonymous

Dont lvl up resistence early on. But if you hit the softcap for vigor and endurance/vitality, this will help more than exceeding vigor softcap

The fact that Resistance doesn't count toward starting Soul Level implies that even the devs knew it was a useless ****ing stat.

the wiki is just flat out wrong on this one, resistance is the only thing that makes the poison in blight town tolerable, while i was helping with the boss there people kept giving me moss but i dumped enough to resistance until at least this run's end so i can just ignore it mostly.

Guys, when talking about this stat, do also recognize that Phys defense and Mag defense comes from literally every stat you level up...

Solution: Dupe a lot of Boss Souls through glitch and get decent stats, even Resistance if Poison concerns you.

I'm not sure I understand the logic with this stat, "Decreases damage from all forms of Physical attacks and Magical attacks. Not recommended to take this." Really? You don't recommend protecting myself? It seems useless in PvP, what about against bosses as a sorcerer? I get that Vitality is generally better, but then why is this stat in the game? Whatever, I'll just stick with the common builds, I guess. Thanks Obama.

                                                • Anonymous

Seems like an okay stat to me... sure it could have more uses, but for someone like me who likes to fight naked, it is quite useful. I don't have to worry about poison and toxic as much, I get a static decrease to my damage received, and I also get extra defense points against fire and physical attacks. I always sink some levels into it when I got free points left over, because even minor effects can save ones life at times. Maybe that was what the developers had in mind all along? something for free points, but won't be missed by everyone, except those also with keen interest in more subtle defenses.

With resistance at 40 and havel's you can stand in front of the Artorias not doing anything with 20 points into health and get attacked 10 to 15 times till you die. With Havel's you won't get thrown off balance or staggered either so he won't interrupt your Estus drink swing a bunch of times then drink and repeat that simple. Grab a weapon like either a crystal weapon, gravelord sword, or fury sword that are all very strong and require though most minimum requirements, then have pyromancy on the side since it also requires no stats

                                                    • Anonymous

I know resistance is considered weak, but it must effect some odd stat that no one thought about in detail. I have to assume it must effect how much bonus damage one takes from a critical attack(or maybe counter attacks?). I assume that since Wanderer feels good at that with it's high dexterity, and dexterity weapons focus on those.... and rpg's like to sometimes have these classes specializing in crits as also being resistant to them as well. It could also be that the less armor you wear, the more (hidden) effect resistance has on your base defenses? I only think that might be the case since Pyromancers and Wanderers are shown as tough, but did seem to be intended to go with lighter armors.... and knights start with just one point less then the other classes, and start in heavier armor. Or this stat was just intended to be a dump stat unless you for some reason had to spend a level up somewhere, or maybe the effect on defense is higher then it seems. I mean... a few points of defense seems like very little, but I think if the enemy's damage was blocked by enough of the defense stat it could be possibly weakened to as little as 10% of the attacks damage if the defense is that good(I am just going by what I've seen with bare fists pitiful damage in the late game).... possibly works after ones shield defense is taken into account. thoughts on any of these theories?

Does anyone have video/exact test conditions on the static debuff on damage?

It's still not worth getting over Vitality for most people but it'd still be nice to be able to verify/follow up on such a subtle and ill-documented effect,
