Dark Orb is a Sorcery in Dark Souls. To cast a sorcery, you must use a Catalyst or Special Weapons that can cast Sorceries

Abyss sorcery discovered by an Oolacile sorcerer on the brink of madness. Fires Giant Dark Orb.
In contrast to standard soul sorceries, Abyss sorcery is weighty and inflict physical damage. Perhaps a human soul is closer to matter in its humanity.

Usage

  • Ranged Attack
  • Quickly fires a long-reaching Dark Mass at the target

Notes

  • Dark Sorceries deal a combination of physical and magic damage. The magic damage is determined by the INT scaling of your catalyst (as with normal sorceries), and the physical damage is determined by the STR and DEX scaling of your catalyst.
  • This extra physical damage is not shown on your catalyst, and is a hidden stat.
  • Two-handing the catalyst does not increase the physical damage of Dark Sorceries.

Ok so is there a reason to use Dark Orb? Is it worh it? Let's compare it with Heavy Soul Arrow and Great Heavy Soul Arrow since they're most similiar spells.

Casting Speed is pretty much the same but there's difference in movement. HSA and GHSA is straight bolt with stable speed. DO moves somehow unstable and have larger hitbox due to lager size. Depending on situation that can be bad or good - DO is less predictable and bit harder to avoid but can more often hit obstacle. So up to this point they're similiar since those differences are not that big.

How about damage? HSA deals 2.0 MagAdj of pure magic damage. GHSA deals 2.4 MagAdj of pure magic damage. DO 1.7 MagAdj of magic damage and 1.5 PhysAdj (hidden stat) of physical damage. So what does this numbers mean? When we hit target with low defences DO will always deal more damage than GHSA and HSA. But the better protected target is the more weaker split damage will be.

So if we have really high Int and Logan's or Tin Crystalization Catalyst GHSA will be actually slightly better than DO but DO will be better than HSA against most enemies. But there's castings ammount. DO have 12 uses like weaker HSA while GHSA have only 8. So what's the choice? Actually none. High Int sorcerer will prefer White Dragon Breath with same casting speed, 20 uses, 2.8 MagAdj of pure magic damage and ability to hit all targets in line. But what if we have spare spell slots? Depends. If you want more casts with lower damage DO can be better choice than GHSA.

What about dark sorcerers? By dark sorcerer I mean character with mixed build using catalyst that scales with Str od Dex. Well here answer is simple. Do you want slower and weaker spell with more uses? Most dark sorcerers use only Dark Bead or Dark Bead and Pursuers. But if you have free attunement slots answer is YES of course. On dark sorcerer using high Int/Str build with Manus catalyst DO is one of better spells when it comes to damage and outnumbers any type of soul arrow. Same rule apply to dark sorcer with medium Int and high/medium Dex using Tin Banishment Catalyst - DO will be stronger than GHSA/HSA.

So yeah. Dark Orb is actually worth using on any character that also uses different soul arrow types or any build focused around dark sorceries (unless you are at NG+10 and have 10 copies or Dark Bead attunned).
