Hints and Tips:

  • The longsword is an underrated straight sword that in experienced hands is very viable in both PvE and PvP. It holds its own against any other straight sword, with a good combination of low weight, low stamina cost, very low stat requirements, and reasonable damage output to go along with its balanced moveset.
  • Often compared to or replaced by the balder side sword, which has greater reach for the same weight and only slightly higher stat requirements. The longsword's moveset is very similar to the balder side sword, with the exception of its second strong (R2) thrust attack.
  • As with many other straight swords, the longsword's first strong (R2) attack is a forward thrust that deals good damage and can benefit from the Leo Ring. However, unlike weapons such as the balder side sword, the longsword's second strong (R2) attack is not another thrust, but is instead an upward sweep/disembowel move that runs from the end of the thrust attack animation. In other words, the sword is first thrust straight at a target and then, upon a second R2 command input while the sword remains extended, it is slashed upwards to deal additional, separate damage.
  • The speed of the second upwards thrust can make the longsword very dangerous in experienced hands, as if the initial thrust connects a second, equally damaging second attack can be landed almost immediately. This is particularly effective on targets with low poise that are staggered by the initial attack. Stamina cost and the possibility of targets evading the opening thrust make this a high risk, high reward tactic.
  • The second upwards thrust is not blocked by shields, so if you make the first thrust just out of range of the enemy, the second thrust will hit him through his shield. Excellent in PvP, but takes practice. If executed improperly, you allow quick enemies to get behind you for a backstab.

Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost useless. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
