Best weapon in all of DS1, unless you want a challenge this baby can crack open DS1 and let you bully almost any boss, comboed it with Tarkus set you not only have great fashion but the stability + great damage makes it almost unbeatble, so my friends if you like being a overpowered Tank you don't always have to be a Giant Dad, sometimes you can be Tarkus Black-Greataxe just like me.

The suicide walk into the catacombs, the bonewheels and the random drop chance make it seem extremly annoying to get to this wepaon. But it's worth all the hassle and just takes a few minutes to get to. Let Leeroy kill Pinwheel right after it to become even more op. Cause who doesn't like to start DS with 20 Estus flask?

Easily my favorite of all the Great Axe, it's easily the longest Great Axe having significantly more reach than the other four as a result, has diagonal r1 swings that are way faster than the swings of almost any weapon that's comparable to it in terms of size and weight and are vastly superior to the standard Great Axe R1s imo and can deal with crowds better, it has a good rolling attack being a wide horizontal spinning swing that is great for catching early dodges or hitting multiple enemies,
the running attack is nothing special being the same as the running attacks of the other Great Axes the only noteworthy thing about it is that it can pancake enemies when 2-handing the weapon,
the 1-handed R2 although it's rather slow it's a jumping smash that pancakes most foes and does very heavy damage, and the 2-handed R2 although it is incredibly slow does enormous damage and absolutely yeets most enemies and heavily staggers any that don't get outright pancake-flipped or launched across the ground by it
the R2s are very slow however especially the 2-handed one and are extremely difficult to consistently land without trading or using it in very situational scenarios, it's satisfying to land and certainly cool but way too slow to be practical so I recommend trying to focus on just Jump Attacks instead they're much faster and do just as much if not more damage without the insanely long windup and still flattens most enemies, this weapon does extremely high critical damage, making ripostes, backstabs and certain special plunging attack criticals very powerful with this weapon to the point it took no more than four ripostes to kill Gwyn at full health with this weapon
not to mention it's just so sexy-looking easily not having much contest in it's weapon class in terms of Fashion imo, overall an absolutely fantastic weapon for a strength build if you manage to get an Axe-wielding Black Knight to drop it and well worth the Twinkling Titanites.

Is it truly, that this weapon deals by it's R1 attacks only 75% of damage, which can be seen in inventory and damage calculators?

            • Anonymous

very strong option for PvP the damage is great the 2hr1 is amazing and the backstab damage is nutty. the only problem is this thing is a yuuge investment. to use it you need 18 dex which doesnt change the AR. the things weighs alot too so you need alot of endurance if you want to abuse the hornet ring which you 100% are gonna want to do. but its worth the investment its an amazing weapon. currently i got a crush on this bad boy and have been spamming it for a couple weeks now.

Decided to get this one straight after the tutorial on my new character...it was a painful endeavor, but now i have Black Knight Greataxe+5 before Gargoyles. :D

This was my weapon of choice when i decided to do a strength build, and murder everyone i found. Fun times.

The r1s are incredibly fast for a weapon of its size, weight and damage, they're almost as fast, if not as fast as the r1s of greatswords.

Got this axe after the ****er ambushed me in the Catacombs. Plus 5ed it after O+S, and it crushed everything in my path to pieces. 13/10, very fond memories.

This has been my favourite weapon in the series since I had started playing, and the speed and move set seems to be the best in dark souls 1

                        • Anonymous

Like other Great Hammer weapons, the Directional R2/RT move is way, way faster on both startup and end lag than the normal heavy move. Mastering it allows you to not only increase your damage, but also the safety and range of your attacks.

                          • Anonymous

once you get this you have unlocked dark souls easy mode. im not even joking, +0 and minimal stats to two hand can kill havel in TWO parries and ONESHOT taurus demon, and it only gets more insane once its upgraded!

                            • PVE is really good; PVP is Top Tier, among the very best, and some would argue that is the best weapon in the game. It has a weird move-set, kind of, the simple one handed R1(good for Dead Angles) is a bit slow and thus parry-able, same with the roll and attack, but the weapon does so much damage that it is kind of dangerous to attempt a parry (you can do it of course but you need to be extra careful). It also does GREAT damage with criticals, is like using a Great Club but with a much better move-set (which gives you options, that makes this a better weapon than the Great Club)
The Running attack is bad (is that clumsy attack you see in many other heavy weapons) same with the R2 (very slow and leaves you open for punishment) BUT the absolute very best movement of this weapon, the simple Two Handed R1... This diagonal swing is probably the absolute best for any weapon and the reason why the Black Knight Great Axe is so good. So if you are using this learn to go Shield/no Shield 2H handed.

"hey i have this weapon i designed for the game and i want it to be called a quality weapon but mockingly" "eh just give it like 4% scaling at plus 5 and call it a day"

this thing, how do i even describe it? it has the most damage and scaling of any bloody black knight weapon, with a fast and versatile moveset that can do anything from cut the tails off dragons to deal with a hundred enemies at once with its wide sweeps, it also has the most range of any black knight weapon i THINK but even if its not its still the best except for aesthetically (BKS is best aesthetically)

                                  • Anonymous

Doing the forward+strong attack combo (the normal jumping attack combo) for the 1 or 2 handed greataxe is much quicker AND does more damage than a normal strong attack for both.

Without upgrades and minimum stats to two-hand; this can one shot Taurus Demon if doing jumping attack off tower.

Upon arrival in Firelink dump levels in strength or dex, make run through Catacombs in human form, summon Leeroy and let him deal with the skellies, pop the 3 humanity from well at Firelink, aggro the knight and lead him to Leeroy, cheer him on and hope you get the weapon drop, start a new file if not, once you got it escort Leeroy to Pinwheel, bone back to Firelink. You should have the min stats to two-hand after leveling up (lvl 20 if warrior).

I refuse to believe that anyone who can swing this giant hunk of metal like it's cardboard can't force open a locked door.

This thing just absolutely murdered artorias,Manus, and kalameet and i was going partially blind due to fact that on characters i was too scared to fight Manus or kalameet

This weapon was nerfed for the R1 attacks, causing the AR to be misleading. It does less direct damage than the black knight halberd despite the higher AR (does more as a Backstab or with the R2 attacks, but the wind up on the power attacks is atrocious). Shame, because this was my favourite weapon once upon a time.

                                              • Anonymous

A good weapon with amazing swing speed and damage, the only thing holding it back is the abyssmal drop rate if you plan on getting it early. If you get this axe early game you're set for the entire game and pvp, if you don't get it a good substitute would be the black Knight halberd or black Knight sword

My absolute personal favorite, and one of the very best weapons in the game by far. This thing is awesome

                                                        • A <15 minute method I've used to get this at SL1 is: start with the Master Key gift, after arriving at Firelink grab the 3x Humanity from the corpse on the nearby well, grab the Ring of Sacrifice from under the bridge, take the elevator down to New Londo Ruins, take the shortcut gate through to Valley of Drakes and grab the Dragon Crest Shield for a 100% block shield. Then head back to Firelink. Use one of your Humanity to reverse hollowing, then run down to the Catacombs, run down past all the skeletons and use the lever down the left passage to open the door. Run through and immediately before the first narrow bridge, look down and you'll see a bit of land below the side of the bridge you are coming from. Drop down here, heal and look down again for the summon sign - roll towards that. Summon Paladin Leeroy, then move towards one of the edges of the platform he is on and he'll willingly drop down. Stay up there, use all of your Humanity items and equip the Ring of Sacrifice to give you a second attempt if you die. You can sort of control Leeroy by standing on the opposite edge of this platform to where you want him to move. If you stand at the edge you use to make him drop down, he'll run towards the nearby tunnel. If you stand at the opposite end, he'll move towards the Black Knight. You'll may need to run back and forth between these cliff edges to make sure he doesn't run too far forward too soon and get mobbed by all the Pinwheel Skeletons, as he can definitely die. Once most/all of the pinwheels are dead, drop down to where the item pickup is and collect it, then drop down again. Make sure Paladin Leeroy is following you by getting close to him, then head towards the Black Knight (away from the tunnel) and there will be a flat vertical wall on the right towards the far wall, get close to this and the Black Knight will drop down. Run back to Leeroy as he has probably become distracted by that tunnel. You may want to act as a bit of a distraction to help Leeroy kill the knight. If Leeroy tragically dies, your 100% shield should let you block at least one hit from the Black Knight while circling around for a backstab. Hope this helps! Praise the sun!

Very useful with 40 STR and 20 Dex. It settings really fast and does more damage than the zweihander though it's poise break isn't as high. I recommend farming for souls at anor Londo 80000 to about 100000 to get it upgraded fully that is including buying the twinkling titanite

                                                            • Anonymous

If you're looking to get this at the beginning of the game, follow these steps:
Start game with master key. Immediately go to grab the astora sword to kill skeletons. At the shrine, grab the ring of sacrifice for safety (do not equip it yet) and the chest of homeward bones if you want them. Now go through the game and get at least 10 humanity (but do not use any humanity you've collected yet). Level strength to 24 and dex to 13 before you go into the catacombs.

Make your way through catacombs to where you warp to the gravelord covenant, join the covenant and get the gravelord sword. Your stats will allow you to one-hand it. Kill the two skeletons above the black knight with astora sword (if you dont have the faith requirement you can still backstab/parry them for good damage) so they do not interfere. Before you drop through the floor to kill the black knight, equip the ring of sacrifice and use any humanity you have so you have at least 10. Be careful when you do drop down, as he will likely attempt to kill you as you fall down. The safest method for killing it is with backstabs, hence why you have the gravelord sword. However be wary of blocking attacks, as they will either consume almost if not all stamina or ignore your shield. If you die, the ring will break and you won't lose your humanity, giving you another chance without worry of losing it for good. If it doesn't drop, you'll have to restart the game.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

                                                              • Everyone should kill Lautrec with the R2. He gets launched like a loony tunes character on the R2 - he'll swear and curse you right even as he gets knocked back and forth by the big bastard swings.
