Equip Load in Dark Souls , also known as Equip Burden, is a game mechanic that controls the impact of the total weight carried on movement speed, rolling and Stamina regeneration.
Equipped consumable items, ammunition and spells will not contribute to equip weight.
When talking about Equip Load a concept often used is Encumbrance or Encumbrance Level. Encumbrance is the percentage of max Equip Load currently used (for example at 20 of 80 Equip Load, Encumbrance is 25%)
Amount
Equip Load is primarily governed by Endurance, increasing linearly up to 139 at 99 Endurance (no soft cap; see table below).
Equip Load can also be increased by utilizing some items:
- Havel's Ring increases max equip load by 50%.
- Ring of Favor and Protection increases max equip load by 20%.
- Mask of the Father increases max equip load by 5%.
The items stack multiplicative, for a total of 89% increase to Equip Load when all three are worn (150% * 120% * 105% = 189%).
Endurance/Equip Load Table
Endurance: | 10 | 20 | 30 | 40 | 50 | 60 | 70 | 80 | 90 | 99 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Equip Load: | 50.0 | 60.0 | 70.0 | 80.0 | 90.0 | 100.0 | 110.0 | 120.0 | 130.0 | 139.0 |
Impact on Movement, Rolling and Stamina Recovery
- The roll and run speed of the player will vary with the amount of equipped weight.
- Encumbrance Level and armor also affects the speed of your stamina regeneration. With higher Encumbrance Levels, Stamina regeneration is reduced.
- Some Armor pieces reduce Stamina regeneration even further (up to -5 per second for full sets). See the Stamina page for details.

- Players may refer to the following table for the commonly referenced fast and medium roll breakpoints when equipping any combination of the above items. The numbers listed for each category refer to the maximum equip load at the corresponding Endurance respectively for fast 13/22, fast 13/23, fast 13/24, or medium 11/33.
- To illustrate, the highest value in each cell is the medium roll maximum breakpoint: having an equipment load heavier than the specified load amount will result in heavy encumbrance ("fatrolling"). This value is always exactly half of your maximum equipment load.
- MotF is Mask of the Father, RoFaP is Ring of Favor and Protection, and H'sR is Havel's Ring.

Changes
- Patch 1.05 increased the base equip burden by 6 points. Giving exactly 80 at 40 endurance. The patch also changed how the different burden loads were calculated. Before when your equip weight ≥ 25%/50%/100% then you would hit the next burden level, now it is equip weight > 25%/50%/100% that you hit the next bracket. Which is more logical and likely a typo in the original code. There's still a few instances where your equip weight is exactly on the break point, but will still give the movement of the weight class above; this is probably due to some decimal rounding error in the code.
- Patch 1.06 decreased the percentage of Mask of the Father from 15 to 5%. It also changed the Dark Wood Grain Ring to only function below 25% equip weight.

What’s the difference in movement speed between light load and medium load?

if youve played other fromsoft games before ds1. like ds3, bloodborne, or elden ring, i recommend that you try to stay on light equip load at all times. it will feel the most natural

So i have 70.2/230.4 equip load right now, and i have a mid roll, is it possible to fast roll with 70 equip load?

i dont think the havel rings gives 50 percent more equip load. Because i had 60 equip load then i put the ring on and it went to 90.
- Anonymous
Hopefully this stops the redundant question for max load with all possible buff items
100% times 150%= 150% havels ring
150% times 120%= 180% HR plus Thicc Ring
180% times105% =189% HR plus TR plus giant dad's face

I'm new to the game. If I have higher equip load will I move faster or slower? And if I use havel's ring will I move fast or slow?

Are those i-frames at the start of roll, at the end or in the middle?
- Anonymous
So I suppose it's the Total Frames that determines the "speed" of a roll. So.. what's the framerate of Dark Souls? Somewhere I found it's 30, is that correct?
- Anonymous
Maybe you could add the total equip burden to the calculation above? (Patch 1.06 / Havel’s Ring + Ring of Favor + Mask of Father = 262,71)

Damn some of you jackasses are mean. If someone doesn't understand it then explain it and move on or don't reply at all. No reason to be calling people idiots we are all gamers here and no one should be afraid to ask something.

So, I'm doing an 8.3% equip load barbarian build with a Great Club, Hollow Soldier Waistcloth, Ring of Favor and Protection, and Havel's Ring. On the MugenMonkey calculator, my equip load percentage is 8.3% with my ratio at 13.5/162.0. However, when I look at the exact calculation it comes out to 8.33333333%. Is this giving me an extra recovery frame, or am I just experiencing a Placebo Effect? It seems like my recovery is longer sometimes, and then other times it doesn't. Can someone do some frame-perfect testing to debunk this?

Hello, I was playing dark souls like normal a couple minutes ago, had a setup with which I fast rolled. All of a sudden, in the middle of a fight, I start midrolling instead of fast rolling, and I haven't been able to use the same setup with fast roll even after leveling endurance once. What happened?

At 3rd April 2020 it says "Encumberence is the percentage of max Equip Load currently used (for example at 20 of 80 Equip Load, Encumberence is 40%)" but 20/80 is 25%!

Have played through Bloodborne Sekiro and DS3 but understanding Equip Load in DS1.. FK I rather play all game with no armor

Okay ,I might be stupid but my equip load percentage is literally 26% and im fatrolling. When its below 25% thats what i consider medium roll,Or is that different from DS3 ? In DS3 fat roll is above 70% and it looks similar to the roll Im getting now . Help ?

A whole page, and not a single mention about WHICH STAT AFFECT THE EQUIP LOAD??? basic info, can't find anywhere, just like everything else in this game i have to figure It out by myself..cool

Wish someone had developed a calculator for equip load so I could figure out my build before even starting the game, but it's nothing dedicated or whatever, so I can just improvise and toss in points as I need it.

My equip load changed in a way that makes no sense. I had a max load of 58 and was at 26.7. I upgraded my max load to 60 and and went from a 5.0 weight sword to a 8.0 weight sword and my equip load went up to 33.9. What is going on?? I didn’t change any armour or other weapons and I even upgraded my endurance to compensate for the increased weight. Qu’est-ce que *****??

I have 50.0 out of 131.4 and I’m fatrolling for some reason. Help please

Also equip load is determined by vitality not to endurance.
- Anonymous
This is all wrong. You start fat rolling at 70% and up weight and you roll quickly when you are under 30% weight then 70% and down to 30% is mid rolling.

How do you calculate the amount of endurance needed for a full black knights armor and sword

I'm at 51.0/131.4 with Havel's what total do I need to fast roll
- Anonymous
After a great deal of testing, I've found that my roll speed changes around 70% of my equip load. Specifically, I have a max equip load of 52. At 36.5, I roll very slowly. At 36.3, it's much faster.-terribleperson, /u/terriblestperson
How to look hilarious and have good defense/poise with fast-roll:
Prep Step: Make sure you at least get to Endurance Level 20+ (more if your weapons are heavy)
Step 1: Get the ring of Favor and Protection by killing that guy in the cage in the belltower (Lautrec)
Tip: When he rolls toward you, parry when he starts to stand up. Also, don't take the Ring of Favor and Protection off: it breaks.
Step 2: Go down straight down the path past the Titanite Demon by Andre and defeat the Moonlight Butterfly. You need the key.
Step 3: Go back to the fork on that path (there's a pool of water on the intersection. Go down carefully and run over to the tower. Kill Havel inside.
Tip: No shame in cheesing him. If you're not confident enough to parry, roll to the side and backstab him. He's slow.
You now have a high equip load, but you don't look hilarious enough yet and your defense/poise can go higher.
Step 4: Continue through the game until you get to Anor Londo. On the first floor of the castle proper, there's a unlit fireplace with an illusory wall behind it. Watch out for mimics and get Havel's armor set.
Step 5: Equip Havel's chest plate. I'm fairly certain that it gives you the most defense and poise per equip load.
Step 6: Slap on whatever bits of light armor you can without exceeding the weight limit. In this situation, more light pieces are usually better then one heavier one.
Step 7: Feel great until Ornstein and Smough delete you.
