Health in Dark Souls , also referred to as Life, Hit Points or HP, is a game mechanic that controls if the player is alive. It's represented by a red bar on top of the hud.
Amount
- The Vitality stat governs the amount of Health the character has.
- The maximum Health of 1900 HP is achieved at 99 Vitality (hard cap).
- The amount of HP gained per level in Vitality fluctuates heavily, but generally it can be said that above 40 Vitality the amount gained reduces heavily (soft cap).
- Health can be increased by wearing the Ring of Favor and Protection (+20%), the Tiny Being's Ring (+5%) and the Mask of the Mother (+10%).
- Health can be decreased by wearing the Dusk Crown Ring (-50%) or being cursed (-50% for the duration of the curse).

Depletion of health
Health generally gets depleted by taking physical or elemental damage. It can also be lowered by poison, toxic or bleeding. There are also enviormental means of losing health such as falling, standing in fires, traps or touching lava.
Recovery
There is no passive regeneration of health. It can only be regenerated by player actions, such as
- Drinking Estus (between 5 and 20 uses and +300 and +700 HP, fills up at bonfires)
- Using one time consumables:
- Divine Blessing (full restore)
- Humanity (full restore)
- Twin Humanities (full restore)
- Fire Keeper Soul (full restore, use not recommended before ng+)
- Elizabeth's Mushroom (+100 HP per second for 30 seconds)
- Resting at a Bonfire (full restore)
- using a Homward Bone or the mircle Homeward has the same effect
- Casting a healing mircale:
- Equipping an item with passive Health regeneration:
- Ring of the Evil Eye (Ring; 30 HP for each fallen enemy)
- Sanctus (Shield; 2 HP every 2 seconds)
- Butcher Knife (Axe; 5 HP per successful hit)
- Server (Curved Greatsword; 7 HP per successful hit)
- Smough's Hammer (Great Hammer; 10 HP per successful hit)
Trivia
- When using items to go above 1900 HP (the maximum at 99 Vitality without items) the health bar will not show the HP. The HP are however still present and count fully against damage, they just don't get displayed.
- One block of the Health Bar is equal to roughly 135.7HP, and each division of each block is about 27.1HP.

I have a character with 99 vitality, and I've noticed something odd lately (since I leveled it that high) that occasionally (about 10-15% of the time) when I take a hit, I simply don't take damage on the bar. Nothing else is boosting my health, just the vitality.

I don't see it here but I feel it's worth mentioning that the max health you can have (99 vitality + ring of favor and protection + mask of the mother + tiny being's ring) is 2,565 hp.

When your health reaches 0, you die.
