Homeward Bone

2034.png

Bone fragment reduced to white ash. Return to last bonfire used for resting.
Bonfires are fueled by bones of the Undead. In rare cases, the strong urge of their previous owner's to seek bonfires enchants their bones with a homeward instinct.

Homeward Bone is a Consumable in Dark Souls.

Homeward Bone Usage

  • Transports player to the last visited Bonfire, player loses neither souls nor humanity.
  • Same effect as the "Homeward" Miracle.

Trivia

  • Bonfires were originally used to burn the bones of slaughtered cattle, hence the name; bone-fire.
  • Homeward Bone is obviously a play on words with the expression "Homeward Bound".

There are two instances that I have encountered where a homeward bone DOES NOT take you back to the last bonfire you rested at. The first is when you first visit the Painted World. Regardless of the last bonfire you rested at, when you first visit and then leave the painted world a homeward bone will always take you to the Anor Londo bonfire, even if you never rested there. The second instance is upon killing Gwyn. A homeward bone in the remaster will not transport you at all, just reload you in the same spot. In the original game I believe it activates the Dark Lord cutscene and ends the game.
