The Moonlight Greatsword is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.

This sword, one of the rare dragon weapons, came from the tail of Seath the Scaleless, the pale white dragon who betrayed his own."
"Seath is the grandfather of sorcery, and this sword is imbued with his magic, which shall be unleashed as a wave of moonlight."

How to Get / Where to Find the Moonlight Greatsword

  • Acquired by cutting off Seath the Scaleless' tail.
  • Player must cut the middle tail off, you must hit the end of the tail for the tail to come off. The best way to do this is to make sure you are as light enough to run quickly. Run over and stand by the crystal you need to destroy in order to damage him at the start of the fight, and wait for him to shuffle over and do a breath attack. His attack will take a few seconds, then shatter the crystal which will stun him giving you plenty of time to chop or Soul Spear his tail off. The tail should fall off after about 500 damage and after patch 1.05 it gets directly transfered into your inventory, so there no longer is the possibility of losing the weapon for the playthrough, when cutting Seath's tail, while it's tip containing the weapon is inside the wall. You acquire the weapon, even without finishing off Seath.

Hints and Tips:

  • Give to Frampt to receive 5000 souls.
  • The Moonlight Great Sword's heavy attacks fling blades of magic at the enemy, which explode on impact. This useful ability, however, cannot be used too often, as each swing reduces the durability of the weapon by 20 or 40 points, depending on if you are wielding it one or two handed. These ranged heavy attacks have heavy knock-back, sending foes flying or knocking them down upon impact.
  • It also raises Magic defense by 40.
  • The Intelligence damage scaling has greatly reduced effectiveness past 40 Intelligence. Up to and including 40 Intelligence, each point of Intelligence adds about 7 damage with a fully upgraded Moonlight Greatsword. Above 40 Intelligence, each point of Intelligence adds about 2 damage with a fully upgraded Moonlight Greatsword.
  • Pure magic damage, useful moveset and fairly low stat requirements make moonlight greatsword one of the more popular PvP weapons.
  • The moonlight sword has been found in almost every single From Software game, all the way back to the first King's Field game.

Lore

  •  The sword is part of a long line of moonlight greatswords.

Not sure why I fought seath like 10 times to get this. I'm SL80 ish with 11 in intelligence. This sword does absolutely nothing for me. I could have killed him first try with no effort. But I wanted that *****er's tail. I kind of wish I could have kept the chunk I cut off as a trophy.

I was lucky enough to summon this absolute Chad for the fight who cut seaths tail off for me while I was distracting seath.

am i the only one who thinks the the best weapon(or at least the funnest to use)? want to know the best root to cuting of seaths tail? get the dark bead spell, enter the area, and wait by the crystal. DO NOT POP IT! wait for him to do a breath attack. he'll pop his OWN crystal! go to the biggest tail and spam your 1-hit spell. it should come of after about two. finish him off(if sucsessful). the weapon itself is worth your $50,000 and 10 dragon scales( escpecialy if you're going for an int build). if you have any questions, i'll be here to answer them. thank for 4 listening 2 the youngest (12 year old) dark souls veteran in the world! :)

Keep in mind that his "real/main" tail is in the middle of 2 tail-like appendages and that it is much larger than the other two. Make sure you attack that one and not make the same mistake I did. I killed him before realizing this and now I have to try again in my next playthrough

Honestly, the most frustrating thing about trying to get this weapon, is that Seath will constantly turn around and the area you need to cut for his tail will keep clipping into the walls. I never knew how cramped that arena was until I tried to get this sword. Well worth it, though.

Can someone who is fluent in the English language please proof-read this? It's getting to the point where it's unclear in some places and causing confusion in comments.

500 damage points is a lie. I halve his health hitting nothing but the tip of the tail and it's still on...

As I like to warn anyone planning to use a dragon weapon as a phantom, beware of the durability when spamming the fully charged R2. However, things like the Repair Spell, or powder, can nullify that. Still, beware - a Broken weapon if you have no backups may as well be an invitation to be black crystalled out if the host notices. I mean, it makes sense. 85% less damage is A LOTTA DAMMMMMAGE gone.
