Moonlight Greatsword is a Weapon in Dark Souls. This weapon is acquired by cutting off Seath the Scaleless' tail during the boss fight. While its attack type may suggest it only deals regular damage, it also inflicts significant magic damage. The weapon is particularly effective for Intelligence-based builds due to its high scaling with the Intelligence stat. One of its strong attacks releases a magic projectile that deals damage based on the wielder's Intelligence, making it a powerful choice for sorcerers.
This sword, one of the rare dragon weapons, came from the tail of Seath the Scaleless, the pale white dragon who betrayed his own."
"Seath is the grandfather of sorcery, and this sword is imbued with his magic, which shall be unleashed as a wave of moonlight."
Where to Find the Moonlight Greatsword in Dark Souls
- Acquired by cutting off Seath the Scaleless' tail.
- Out of the three tails, player must cut the middle one, by hitting the end of the tail until it comes off. Make sure you are lightweight enough to run quickly. Run over and stand by the crystal you need to destroy in order to damage the boss at the start of the fight, and wait for him to shuffle over and do a breath attack. Wait for his attack to end in a few seconds, then shatter the crystal which will stun him giving you plenty of time to chop or Soul Spear his tail off. The tail should fall off after about 500 damage.
- After patch 1.05, the sword gets directly transfered into your inventory, so it is no longer possibile to lose it for the playthrough, after cutting Seath's tail and leaving it's tip containing the weapon inside the boss arena. You will acquire the weapon, even without finishing off Seath.
Moonlight Greatsword Hints and Tips in Dark Souls:
- Can be given to Kingseeker Frampt to receive 1 Soul.
- Moonlight Greatsword can be upgraded by using Dragon Scales.
- The Moonlight Great Sword's heavy attacks fling ethereal blades of magic at the enemy, which explode on impact. Each swing of this ability reduces durability of the weapon by 20-40 points, depending on whether you are wielding it one or two handed. These ranged heavy attacks have heavy knock-back, sending foes flying or knocking them down upon impact.
- Wielding the sword raises Magic defense by 40.
- The Intelligence damage scaling has greatly reduced effectiveness past 40 Intelligence. Up to and including 40 Intelligence, each point of Intelligence adds about 7 damage with a fully upgraded Moonlight Greatsword. Above 40 Intelligence, each point of Intelligence adds about 2 damage with the fully upgraded sword.
- Pure magic damage, useful moveset and fairly low stat requirements make Moonlight Greatsword one of the most popular PvP weapons.
Moonlight Greatsword Lore in Dark Souls
- This sword is part of a long line of Moonlight Greatswords, dating back to the 1994 King's Field game developed by From Software.

I literally cannot get this bloody weapon it feels impossible to cut his tail off

If only durability wasn't a thing it prob b the most fun weapon in the game

The upgraded firekeeper 'dingy set' might have the highest curse resistance, add the curse bite ring and bloodshield should cover any issues with Seath's laser (curse), heavy armor is not needed IMO, for mage add the resist curse spell and start chasing that 'tail'.

Real problem with getting this weapon is killing the boss from trying before we can actually get it.
That's because Seath loves to stick his tail deep into rock textures behind him and thus the tip we should hit remains out of range. Also if we are near it he performs crazy slamming attack chain that does some really heavy damage.
So the best option is luring him to the middle and then baiting some slow crystal puking atak. When he is busy vomiting lasers you have to quickly get around his back and attack the tip with all you got before he smashes you to pulp.
If he's at low health don't risk it anymore. Use Homeward Bone or quit the game and start again.
That's one of the trickier tails to get. Only Sanctuary Guardian an Kalameet are harder because they jump and move much much faster than Seath. But you don't need Guardian tail for really anything and Kalameet's one is used mainly for broken PvP ganking with weapon buff. Seath's tail is on the other hand is required for achievement and also makes great weapon for any sorcerer so it's worth to get.

Since you need 16/10 str/dex already, use a lightning claymore or zweihander to make the tail cut less painless. Afterwards, it will remain a good alt weapon for when your mlgs breaks.

I got this in only a couple tries after I figured out a way to get to his tail reliably. The strategy that worked for me is to just repeatedly bait Seath into one of the far ends of his arena, like literally backing yourself into the fog wall or where the invincibility crystal is, and when he gets close and winds up an attack, immediately run around him and rush his tail. As long as you're careful about avoiding the two tail attacks he can do, he should eventually do an attack that leaves his tail open long enough to cut it off.
This way you eliminate the possibility of his tail clipping through the wall, and it also makes it a lot easier to dodge his attacks since most of them don't go behind him. As long as you're cautious and patient it shouldn't take long.
This right here is my favorite thing ever, in the history of forever, I think about this every day

Ring of fog + Bellowing Dragon Crest ring while wearing the chest and skirt of Dusk's set and the everything else of the elite knight set. I cut the tail with a fully upgraded ascended pyromancy flame and great combustion. I really think what was most important was wearing the ring of fog and changing my chest armor to something lighter and less noisy. It only took me one attempt with this set up because Seath didn't notice me as easily as he did in previous attempts and I had more time and opportunity to get close enough to the tail.

So I have to chop the tail off of a boss that turns faster than I can sprint and keeps the tip of his tail clipped through the wall where I can't hit it...
The Japanese make some of the best games, but they add some of the absolute worst mechanics to some of their games. There's difficult, then there's just stupid...

it took me 36 hours to cut that wretched tail, while It only took me 6 hours to defeat ornstein and smough.

When I was fight him, my pc was low and it was somehow not charging well. So I kept on getting battery low notification and everything the notification appears, I won’t be able to move my character unless I press cancel. In all, I had to trade blows with him because this restricted my mobility. As soon as I killed him, he killed me. I lost the opportunity to get the moonlight great sword.
As soon as the fight started was when I started receiving this notification so I had to fight. I couldn’t start all over again.

I just gave myself this weapon with cheat engine, I don't know what's wrong with PTDE but Seath's fight is laggy as **** and both his cursed aoe and tail slam give me huge framerate drops. Really unfair

It's really weird how the only S scaling INT weapon in the game is a greatsword.

lmao I spent the entire fight only hitting his tail and he died without it ever breaking
GG B-team, no wonder later games never included such a retarded mechanic

My husband is on the xbox playing the remastered version, he cut off the tail and couldn't pick up the sword because he was overburdened. When he turned back around after clearing his inventory and it was gone. Would anyone be willing to drop this for him so he doesn't have to play through the game again? If any weapons is needed, he's willing to drop them for you. It's the only one he needs to complete the game

amazing greatsword option for PvP. thing hits like a truck only requires one stat, great damage and the 2hr2's are ****ing wild! the 2hr2's are massive and they have a lingering hitbox. making the attack one of the strongest wakeup options in the game. if your opponent doesn't have enough poise to NOT get knocked down you can chain r2's back to back for a kill. oppressive weapon against low poise builds and still strong against most builds in the game.
come to the township please need more PvPers.

Worth the troublesome run through seath's crack den to obtain.

I swear this is the hardest item to get in the game, no matter how much I hit the middle tail, no matter what weapons or spells I use it just never comes off.
- Anonymous
Tips for cutting the tail: have a high damage, vertical slash weapon(2h greatsword or something similar), run to the immortality crystal, buff up beside it, and when seath starts attacking, run to the tail as he will break it himself and get stunned, giving you a huge window of opportunity.

easy tip when cutting tail:
don't hit the base, hit the tip of the tail
****er's tail quickly separated itself after 4 hits with my 30/30 quality claymore build

does reaching full reinforcement with this weapon give the max magic reinforcement trophy/achievement?
In my successful attempt (in NG++) in cutting his tail, it took me 30 minutes, 10 estus flasks and 10 humanity after getting hit by his tail wipe attack several times. Inbetween there were ~13 minutes of me just trying to get to his tail.
At some point, he did his super breath attack often enough for me to get enough hits in.
(Was fighting with my occult mace +5 as a cleric)

I almost killed Seath before managing to cut his tail, luckily I got it even though I died right after, 10000% worth it

My favorite ds1 build is a dragon bro magic build with this sword. Free fire from the dragon head, high int for versatile magics and also scaled sword AR. The rest can be vit, end, and min requirements for the rest.

Quick notes; The sword and magic wave can both hit and do damage if you catch an enemy right at the tip of the sword. Also, the wave can be either horizontal or vertical depending on if you swing one-handed or two.

My favorite sword. I love this thing. I don't know why, I just do. I love how it's been in every game so far (besides Sekiro but that makes sense since it's a different setting)

Personally I find Butterfly Horn or some enchanted weapon with decent moveset better choice than this sword.
With the strength of Lords, they challenged the ignorant slaves. Gwyn's mighty bolts peeled apart their stone scales. The Witches weaved great firestorms. Nito unleashed a miasma of death and disease. And Seath the Scaleless betrayed his own, and the ignorant slaves were no more.

Can we talk about how painful getting this is when his tail is constantly clipping into the wall...

Fun fact: In polish translation, item description says, that sword was made by Seath the Scaleless scales

Seath's attack where he flails or stomps his tails looks so funny to me, yet it's oh so deadly.

Just did it NG+ couple of big fire balls free aimed did the job

Shoulda read this page ages ago. Third playthrough and I've still never gotten in despite every hit being a vertical attack on the claymore (dunno if angle of the attack matters at all in reality though), but apparently I must have been attacking too close to the base of the tail -.- oh well, hopefully run #4 will work out better.

for anyone still having trouble here is a tip for you you want to hit the white part of the middle tail and the best way i have seen is to use gc on the tail
- Anonymous
The trick is to memorize where his tail lands the 4th time he swings it down. He doesn't pivot while he's attacking so you can chip at it that way if you didn't fully cut it while he's stunned from breaking the crystal
- Anonymous
Idk why people have difficulty cutting off the tail. Just snipe it with a CSS after baiting Seath into breaking the crystal. Because yes, he can break it himself giving you an even longer window of opportunity. Plus as long as you already have been building your wizard kit, it should only take 1 well aimed CSS to cut it. This applies to Kalameet, Priscilla and the Gaping Dragon as well.

TIPS ON HOW TO CUT THE TAIL EASY AS A SORCERER
you will need at least soul spear spell
enter the room, run to the right tail (as it shoots laser from your left to right), go behind it and turn left to trigger the tail wiggle so that after you destroy the crystal, it still has the middle tail facing towards you. while it still stunned, run towards the middle tail and cast soul spear as close as you can to the middle tail without lock-on. you will cut off the tail after 2-3 shots.
afterwards you should never get in behind it in between of the middle and either of the side tail as it will trigger the wiggle. low hp INT build would never survive the attack nor have time to recover. so stick to the front of the right (its left) tail and attack from the right tail from that direction (again, as it shoots laser from your left to right).

So much of the comments are: how to cut tale??? And me cut tail ez. So heres some helpful info for using this weapon.
First of all the durability cost listed for using the r2 2 handed is actually 80 not 40. Its only 40 1 handed. That being said you should keep repair powder in your hotbar and use it frequently if you want to spam blast attacks. However this isnt a mindless spam weapon, as you will find people rolling through or blocking your projectiles if not timed properly. Advanced users will lock, wind up the r2 and then unlock to free aim at targets. It is far more reliable to wind up your r2 while someone recovers from a backstab/riposte, especially 2 handed. This will often instakill most players, as they must roll/block the projectile, the blast and your sword almost all at once. You will be surprised how the moonlight blast can sneak between iframes.
Another approach is firing down narrow hallways or corridors, or charging the r2 around a corner to hit a target as they enter line of sight. With the proper angle you can still hit the moving host with the blast, forcing them to panic roll into a wall.
Then there is of course cliffs. Because this weapons r2 will often blow people backwards, you can abuse the rafters in anor londo, the bridges and ledges in places like the catacombs etc. Even if they block it they will often still get pushed back far enough to die. Since you are running int for this, i recommend logans catalyst, pursuers and if necessary power within for dealing with 3 enemies at once. When a player triggers your pursuers that is the time to start free aiming the r2 for a rollcatch. If they are stupid enough to stand and try to block the pursuers, then this will usually kill them.
Finally. Dont be afraid to let loose at the back of a fleeing host. Its not easy moving the camera especially on consoles. They will never see it coming and panic roll into the blast. Moonlight greatsword is more fun than meta to be honest. I see mages everywhere wielding it but they always forget the potential of the r2. I hope this reminds you.

I just replayed DS1 as a sorcery build for the first time and damn I forgot how much of a pain in the ass it is to cut this mfs tail off. When he isn't just swinging around the part of the tail you need to hit clips through the wall lol. With 15 Estus it's simply a matter of persevering

Get enough stats to two-hand Zweihander (16 str and 10 dex, which is conveniently what MLGS requires to 1H) and upgrade it to Raw +5 for 379 physical damage. Then, use a gold pine resin on it to add 150 lightning damage. If you lure Seath as close to the crystal as possible and break it, he'll be stunned long enough for you to get one hit on his tail (make sure to be below 25% equip load). From there it should take only 1 or 2 more hits for the tail to come off. Hope this helps.
- Anonymous
I struggled with this **** atleast 8 times attempting to cut it off. Achieved it but I had to (as usual) strip naked to get the fast run and stamina to chase the middle tail. Still not sure if it's how much damage or how many hits to trigger the tail to fall but I managed finally with great club. Also samething with kalameet whatever its name but after dying 10 times, the 11th time his tail broke after only a single hit. I'm not sure if that was a bug or if tail HP don't reheal. Very strange but thought I mention it for those depressed each hit damage to tail is reset when you die, it doesn't.

Why, oh, why would FromSoft make it require such a high intelligence score? I feel like more melee-only players would want to use this than people with high magic builds. I get it from a lore perspective, but still... I had wanted to use this with my quality build before I found out about the magic requirement, and I bet a lot of people felt the same way, too.

PVP wise, this is a Top Notch weapon, amongst the absolute very best. Has a great well balanced moveset (not a single move is bad, slow, or leave you open for punishment). Good running attack, R1, great criticals, good for Dead Angles, great with One hand and Two hands, the R2 effect is one of the best weapon effects in the game (if not the best)... And the damage is just amazing (even just with the base requirements) but in a pure INT build is just plain OP. The weapon is quite fast for size and the damage output makes it kind of risky to attempt parries on it, still doable of course...
The only BAD aspect: requires 28 INT to wield it; so, for the most part in a correct build (let's say meta or lower) you won't be able to use other Melee weapons (you have to make a build just to use this one... and that sucks!) ALSO people tend to use it on Wizy's build (the coward way of playing this game as everyone knows) and end up fighting with Dark Beads, pursuers and Crystal Spears and all that OP crap. Whenever I face a worse player that is using this weapon, I know that if I manage to hurt him he will immediately change to "PLAN B": Magic One Shot you!

If you're a sorcerer you could also just use some pyromancy to cut off the tail

1) you need to hit the very tipity tip of the tail. it doesnt take very much damage if you do. be really light for speed and dont worry about shields or spells
its very hard to die or even get hit by seath if you just watch where he is and what he is doing - so slow and predictable.
2) how you will die is trying to hit the rear tail without leaving enough space behind him to run directly *away* from the tail smashes that will follow. dont put yourself behind him near a wall.
so its: kite for space behind him, bait the breath attack, circle to the very tip of the tail, hit it twice, run directly away from tail smashes. repeat.

This is a random question, but how long is the moonlight greatsword, im thinking of making a prop, but i dont know how to do pixel measurements

I have played through this game roughly ten times. Only the first time, and my 100% achievement run did i ever bother trying to cut the tail. Trying to do it with magic is even harder, and a high int character is the only one worth getting this for.
Its the coolest weapon because it appears in every game but they did it dirty in this game.

***FOR SORCERERS***
For too long I have tirelessly worked to try and get a good blade to cut his tail off, since we can only lock on to the center of enemies and blind shooting didn't seem like a good idea.
After getting a longsword to +5 enchanted, trying to cut the tail off and failing miserably (could deal 300 dmg max) (also couldn't use the lighting resin on it because it was enchanted), I, out of frustration in a gush of creative wisdom tried to land a Soul Spear without locking on, just aiming for the general direction of his tail. I missed the first, but the second one chopped the thing right off, like a ****ing carrot. Magic users, please try and land Soul Spear/Crystal Soul Spear on his tail instead of trying weapons. You'll get enough time (a chance) to cast 2 of them. So pretty nice. Good luck
sorry for weird english

**TO CUT OFF HIS TAIL:
You must hit near the tip of his "MAIN" tail. His MAIN tail is the longest one.
**BE AWARE: If you summon a friend, both of you may see his tail on opposite ends. This was messing me an my friend up. It's an online desync issue. Hit the HOST world tail, not the summon. My friend couldn't even see the tail that I saw, it was on the opposite side for him. Someone should add this to the article.

By far my favorite weapon in the game but the R2/RT attacks break the sword really fast so make sure to have repair powder
To cut the tail, when you bait them blast attack on the crystal, start running as soon as you see it coming that way. Be light. Then wail on the tip. I used a zwei + 10 buffed with lightning resin while tripping on power within. Got it. Then proceeded to destroy him.

Note that when his crystal is broken, he will always do a roaring animation. You can abuse this by getting him to destroy it himself while standing as close to him as possible, then circle around and get some free hits on the middle tail.
