Avelyn is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.
Repeating crossbow cherished by the weapon craftsman Eidas. Its elaborate design makes it closer to a work of art than a weapon. Intricate mechanism makes heavy damage possible through triple-shot firing of bolts. but in fact each bolt inflicts less damage."
How to Get / Where to Find the Avelyn
The Duke's Archives. Found in a chest on top of a bookshelf. There are three ways to reach it:
- Rotate the stairs, then immediately run down, and off, when the lowest part of the stairs is above the bookshelf. This can be a hit and miss approach, so prepare to die. (Note: if you start moving down the stairs immediately once you are able to and hug the right side of the stairs the entire way down without stopping, you should be able to reach the chest fairly consistently since the timing seems to work out correctly, with about 45% equip burden.)
- Stand on the ledge above it (at the bottom of the stairs) for 10+ seconds. Sprint up and activate the stair, wait until it has rotated 180 degrees, then quit and reload your game. You should now find yourself back on the ledge, above the shelf, with the stairs turned the other way. Drop down.
- Online: Wait on the ledge above the bookcase while a co-op player rotates the stairs, then drop down.
Notes
- Give to Frampt to receive 50 souls.
Hints and Tips
- After you open the chest, if you have not cleared out the enemies in the room prior to attempting to get the chest, it is strongly advised to warp back to a bonfire instead of attempting to clear the room. Immediately upon opening the chest, you will be pelted by arrows from the undead archers, on top of having already taken damage from the fall. If you fall off the bookshelf to the right, it should give you enough time to warp back to a bonfire. The reason being that if you happen to die after getting the chest, there is a possibility that your souls will spawn directly in front of the chest as opposed to anywhere else, even if you died on ground level. Especially if you have built up a lot of humanity, dealing with the annoyance of having to clear the archives again to continue your quest is far better than having to make this very difficult jump twice in a row.
- Special: Avelyn fires 3 Bolts right after another in burst fire fashion.

My deaths during the Dukes Archives:
6 while attempting the Dukes skip.
1 To seethe himself when trying to take the Tail.
1 Due to falling off an invisible path.
7 While dropping in attempt to get Avelyn
Why was this the hardest part of the Archives?!

I had lots of trouble with Manus and Kalameet on NG+, until I tried main-handing Avelyn with Havel Greatshield, Child Mask, and Cloranthy Ring. Love this weapon! I was able to cheese 2nd phase Ornstein with this, too!

It sucks that crossbows doesn't have zoom function and you need to use a binoculars to do it, making it a hassle to use

Lightning Infused Avelyn with Lightning Bolts is probably one of the strongest combos in the game with little to no stat investments. A great offhand addition if you want to surprise people in pvp, or even just down regular mobs in one 3-shot burst from a range. Barely any Str/Dex and still faceroll almost the entire game with this and a Chaos Gargoyle Halberd/Balder Side Sword.

Works well in pvp if you use the dragon torso stone, if someones blocking up close and their guard gets broken, you can shoot them. I suggest using it in the offhand.
this is the last piece to my int dex build, this works great for me as a secondary attack when i roll back and to the side giving an oportunity to shoot!

With 14 intelligence (and the DLC) method #2 plus hidden body and ring of slumbering dragon makes it A LOT easier. The archers won't even shoot at you. Mage seems to see you somehow but spells appeared to be blocked by the bookshelf. Hidden body is cheese, yeah, but this jump is pretty damned gimmicky anyway.

Someone should REALLY update this page that making it Crystal will reduce the 150 durability to 15. I really could've used that information before I totally botched my only avelyn... on my crossbow run...

So this is clearly the best crossbow of the game : it deals much more damages than the others if the 3 bolts land on the target, it doesn't seem to be slower than the others and it has a very inviting style. It is a great choice if you havn't any good alternative range weapon. However, if you have a dex build then pharis bow may be a better choice since it is faster to shoot. Furthermore this weapon is one of the hardest to find in the game.

Does it use 3 bolts per shot, or just 1 bolt with 33.3% damage on each one?

I didn't even know this was in DS1, I found it in DS2 and was like "Oh wow."
This thing is very effective against Gwyndolin. It fires almost instantly with no "wind up" animation first, so winging him as he teleports is easy. You can often get two rounds on him per teleport and sometimes three. Just be careful not to be caught by one of his attacks during the reload animation after firing.
I died trying to get Avelyn, so naturally I wanted to try it again but the stairs are on the other side now and I can't find a lever nor can't I find another way to the other side where those stairs are now.
I don’t understand why this isn’t one of the weapons you need to get for the Knights Honor achievement, I’m pretty sure this would classify as an excellent rare and hard to get weapon.

lol somehow I lucky dropped on the bookcase landing right in front of the chest perfectly on the first try! :P

Remember to clean the area first to avoid being killed as soon as you open the chest and half a second before you can actually pick it up. It would be **kin frustrating I assure you

Second method doesn't seem to work. Am I doing something wrong?
- Anonymous
Jogging down the steps with a mid rolling weight ratio as soon as the animation for turning the lever ended allowed me to land this fall perfectly, I didn’t hug the side of the stairs as mentioned here however the timing may vary randomly as this was my only attempt therefore I didn’t try with a fat rolling ratio though I’d imagine you would miss the ledge and splat into the ground harder than the one reborn after it’s moon birth

How do I get this thing to +15? Andre's already got the very large ember and my Avelyn doesn't even show up in modify equipment.

I can also confirm that Avelyn is great for destroying wrath of the gods mage spam users and also great for getting some damage in on an invading dark spirit as they spawn in before the fight even begins :)

Call this thing the Mage Masher. I think crossbows deal about the same poise damage as a straight sword, and like everything else, also deals double when counter attacking. This leads me believe that this one with 3 bolts a spray, it deals about 30 poise damage, and about 60 during a counter. How this works in practice: if you see that catalyst or talisman twitch, spray them down, as due to the ring and stat investments of a pure caster (45 dex for max cast speed, 40 cast stat for damage, and a Bellowing Dragon Ring usually over Havel's) and most casters will still want to quickroll, they're poise will be in the gutter, and you will be able to stun them out of their cast animation, usually by the second bolt. You can really shut down Dark Bead and Wrath of Gods spammers with this beauty.

Can confirm that the second method works, but make sure to walk out there properly or else you risk falling all the way to the floor.
got on top of the bookshelf first try on my latest character, just make sure to jump out of the stairs before you're over it, because the momentum will make you land right on top of it, otherwise, you'll overshoot it if you try jumping out right as you're above the self.
