Drops | 900 Souls (NG+ 1800) Green Titanite Shard Red Titanite Chunk |
Burrowing Rockworm is an Enemy in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. Enemies are hostile creatures that respawn when players rest at a Bonfire or upon death. Special enemies that do not respawn are classified as Bosses, Mini Bosses or Invaders.
Burrowing Rockworm Information
Giant worms faced after the Ceaseless Discharge. Have pincer-like mouths and spits corrosive acid.
Drops
- Green Titanite Shard (25.81% Chance)
- Green Titanite Shard x2 (4.76% Chance)
- Red Titanite Chunk (5% Chance)
Attacks
- Ground Rockworm
- Acid spit: Spits a ball of acid out at close to medium range. Does 40 durability damage to all equipped items, even secondary weapons/shields. Durability damage still applies if blocked.
- Lunge: Lunges its upper body forward to deal medium-high damage. Hard to block. It recovers fast after using this.
- Bite: Grabs you with its pincers and goes on to eat you. Very painful and will kill low health/armor builds in one grab. Can be escaped by repeatedly mashing L1/R1 in order with minimal damage done to you.
- Sweep: Sweeps its body from its left to its right, to left, to right. (I forgot to test if it attacks the same if standing on its left side)
- Hanging Rockworm
- Acid sweep: Spits acid around 180-degrees in front or behind itself, depending on where the player is. Has very short range from the front, about medium range from behind. Does 40 durability damage to all equipped items, even secondary weapons/shields. Durability damage still applies if blocked.
- Lunge: Lunges its upper body forward to deal medium-high damage. Hard to block. It recovers fast after using this. Can also target the player, if behind.
- Bite: Grabs you with its pincers and goes on to eat you. Very painful and will kill low health/armor builds in one grab. Can be escaped by repeatedly mashing L1/R1 in order with minimal damage done to you.
- Thrash: Thrashes forward 4 times, attacking everything at close-to-mid range, largely forward and at shallow/moderate angles. Can also target the player, if behind.
Strategy
They pop out of the ground at certain places and spit acid from a distance. If the player chooses to try and fight them up close they have two so far know attacks for countering that. They will sometimes thrash about spinning and smacking everything around them, knocking the player back. Other times they will grab a hold of the player in its pincers and clench them hard taking away allot of health, then throwing the player down in the dirt. This attack is best avoided by watching the pincers on the mouth, as they will extend outwards when they are about to bite.
- I noticed the hanging ones don't seem to fight back much if you attack with a spear from a shallow angle from its right-front, just stabbing them to their right of their eye with the heavy 1- or 2-handed attack (seems you have to be closer to hit their left side). Occasionally, they'll do their acid sweep, but you'll recover from your attack and be able to back off well before it comes close (it'll probably still miss you if you don't even move at all). They don't seem to attack any other way if you stay back far enough to just barely be able to hit them, and many times they'll just take the damage without doing anything about it.
- For those who lack ranged weapons, the Poison Mist/Toxic Mist pyromancies are very effective. On NG, one use of Poison Mist will kill a rockworm outright, can be used from a safe distance with a bit of practice, and can hit two at a time in the area leading to the Large Flame Ember. Patience required.
- Ranged attacks are obviously recommended.

here's my theory - the burrowing rockworms are the adult form of the maggots that come out of the egg dudes that quelaag infects. so they're quelaag's kids in a way

What are those drop rates based on? Datamining? Testing? Sample size? Because those numbers seem extremely high compared to what I'm experiencing. Anecdotal, yes, yes, but getting a single Green Shard from well over 100 kills is so impropable I'm inclined to believe those numbers are wrong.

The hanging ones are much more aggressive against targets behind them. You can kill them from the front with minimal danger as long as you have a weapon with good reach (used Zwei), so the safest spot in the area near Large Flame Ember is ironically right in the middle of them. With 3 of them alive I could safely kill them without any real retaliation.

I don't know where this drop data came from, but I've killed around 150 of these things with 410 item discovery and I've found one red titanite chunk and two green titanite shards., so I have a hard time believing the listed numbers.

Dung pies make quick work of them, it takes two to apply toxic
I’ve been farming them at SL1. Poison knives (can be bought from undead merchant in the tunnel near Firelink Shrine, leading to Undead Burg), will drain their entire lifebar.
Only two knives are required to proc the poison and kill them. Extremely effective for little to no risk, as they cannot aggro you at this range.
