Egg Carrier is an Enemy in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. Enemies are hostile creatures that respawn when players rest at a Bonfire or upon death. Special enemies that do not respawn are classified as Bosses, Mini Bosses or Invaders.
Egg Carrier Description
These unfortunate souls crawling on all-fours are infected with a parasite that's causing large eggs to grow on their backs. They are mostly harmless as only a few will actively go after you without provocation, and the ones that do move so slowly that you can out-pace them with ease. If they attack you enough times successfully you'll be infected with the Egg Head affliction - more info on this can be found here. Killing them releases the Vile Maggots growing in their backs, and those creatures are small, hard to hit and are a general nuisance, so it's advised to avoid killing Egg Carriers at all where possible.
Drops
- Egg Vermifuge (5% Chance)
Attacks
- Grub Attack - the Egg Carrier latches onto the player while a maggot comes out of one of the eggs and bites.
Strategy
Most are non-hostile, so just avoid them. Not worth the hassle of dealing with all those worms.

the real difficulty of Dark Souls is not having your stomach turn every time you respawn at the bonfire in demon ruins

The best melee weapon to kill them is probably the Black Knight Greataxe

I used the evil eye rig and would poison myself as soon as I left the bonfire. I would then kill all 24 enemies on the way with soul arrows (they don’t do much to queelag) and I would be back to full health

Guys relax with the strict advice to never kill them, after killing the bearer himself if you delay your next attack and time it right you can kill all 5 at once as soon as they spawn out. Any weapon can pull this off and the timing becomes stupidly easy after a couple of successful attempts. I often kill every one of them because it becomes really satisfying even though there’s not much reward...

Wasn't expecting the nasty surprise when I killed the two outside Quelaag's domain. The Vile Maggots killed me faster than the boss did in any of my 6 attempts.

Bit odd how some of them need to be attacked to aggro them while others are already aggro

Ugh. It's my first playthrough and I hate the thought of growing an egg sack over my head!

Great Chaos Fireball is great for dealing with these if you want to kill them for some reason. The Lava Pools kill the little worms.
Extremely easy to defeat with Greater Soul Arrows and Ring of Fog. Just keep safe distance and spam arrows (one shot, one kill). Carriers/Maggots won't even aggro at you and you can pick them from distance with ease. On the other hand single Chaos Fireball will one-shot all of them (lava pool burn maggots) but you need to get closer.
However they barely drop any souls so there's no point in killing them at all unless you need to farm Egg Vermifuges. If you want vefmifuge for Eingyi pyro-shop he will give you one anyway and if you need another for Snuggly you can pick it at Painted World or farm in Darkroot Garden from Tree Lizards.
So is there any reason to actually fight with Egg Carriers at all? No, none. They are just one of many traps for new players. Main purpose of this mob is getting egghead effect or baiting host to attack them during invasion before Quelaag where Vile Maggots will help the invader.
