Drops | 200 Souls (NG+ 800) Transient Curse Jagged Ghost Blade |
Ghost is an Enemy in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.
Ghost Description
The ghosts of New Londo are the spirits of the former residents, who were wiped out when the city was flooded. They are cursed beings, so to interact with them you must become cursed yourself. These ghastly white shades glide and attack through walls, ceilings, and floors. They have long melee ranges and a vicious grab attack. Some are also hidden above and below you, and will stab at you when you go past.
Drops
- Transient Curse (can drop x2) (5% Chance)
- Jagged Ghost Blade (1% Chance)
Attacks
- Stab.
- Long ranged Stab.
- Double overhead Stab.
- Long ranged Grab, then reels you in and slits your throat.
Combat
New Londo's Ghosts and Banshees cannot normally be blocked or harmed by the player; however, there are three ways to enable combat:
- Become cursed: A distinct disadvantage, leaving you at half your normal hp, but you will not need to renew it throughout the segment.
- Use a Transient Curse item: The female undead merchant in the aqueduct will sell you up to six for 4,000 souls a piece. There are a couple placed drops in the New Londo Ruins area itself, and the ghosts there may also drop two Transient Curses at a time. Transient Curses will last for 5 minutes, but can leave you very surprised when they run out, suddenly leaving you unable to block and hit.
- Use only the cursed weapons: Ghost Blade, Jagged Ghost Blade or Greatsword of Artorias (cursed). Note that the ghosts attacks also goes straight through normal shields and armor when you are uncursed, so you might as well fight naked. The Ring of Steel Protection will lessen the damage taken (same with high humanity), and you are also able to block with your cursed weapon when it's 2-handed. High poise is also useless, since they'll stagger you no matter the amount of poise. The only poise exceptions are the Havel's Greatshield special ability and the Iron Flesh pyromancy, the latter will also reduce physical damage by 40%, but they both have limited duration. Do not engage multiple ghosts uncursed!
Strategy
- Beware of the ghosts' long-range grab attack, which they can use while floating over open water. If it connects you will be pulled into them, heavily damaged, then released. If there is no ledge below you to fall onto, you'll plummet to your doom. The best strategy is to lure them out of hiding in small groups (ideally one or two at a time), and kill them with a fire weapon after blocking their attacks. Weapons with fast attack speeds are also useful as the ghosts are easy to interrupt. One of the most difficult aspects about fighting ghosts is their ability to come at you from any direction and especially through walls. Many times you won't even know they are there until you have been attacked or surrounded. This makes it important to make your way through cautiously and eliminate ghosts as you come across them. This is due to the fact that you don't know if another part in the level will take you close enough to allow them to detect you and catch you unawares.
- Wearing the ring of fog may help to decrease the radius at which they detect you, but it decreases the range by a small bit.

If you are cursed: magic can also kill them (for the sorcerers among us). If you don't have or don't wanna use Transient Curse: Get the regular curse. Warp to the depts, take the shortcut to (near) the boss room but walk back into the dephts towards the rats. After tham there is a basilisk. Let him use his mist attack on you and here you go: cursed! Yes, half you health will be gone but this curse lasts forever. Be sure to buy a Purging Stone. Undead Merchant (Female) sells it for 6,000 souls. She is near Firelink Shrine.

New player PSA: If you don't have the Lordvessel yet, just stay out of the ghost area. You are not ready.

Actually they are pretty challenging enemies for simple trash mobs with low health and cheap drop. And not because of the whole curse stuff since Transit Curses drop from them often.
Their atacks have long range and can be extremely damaging if not blocked. Plus they can ambush you through walls and floors. Even if your health bar takes half of the screen, one ghost combo can easily tear most of it, especially at NG+. They usually come in pairs and atacks from 2 sides stunlocking you with quick slashes.
So on one hand you have to stay alert all the time and proceed slowly but at the same time you can't stay in one place or they'll surround you and you have eliminate them quickly before more arrives.

i stacked a ring of fog and hidden body to rush through on ng+ and it didnt do anything

First comment on this whole wiki because this is first place I ever went...it felt natural going in blind. Used the easy transient curse thinking they should respawn as drops nope! Now I'm cursed at level 40 slaying!

I think those enemies are kinda like skellies before catacombs, basically a "Nope, don't go there yet, you have a perfectly good path to Undead Burg, make use of that!"

I found that if you use hidden body you can also attack the ghosts, just found it out and i cant find any evidence of it on google.

My wife started playing the game and didn’t know where to go and doesn’t tend to use walkthroughs. She ended up wandering down to New Londo and facing these especially unforgiving douchebags.
She played a sorcerer, so her magic attacks worked, but she ran out of spells too fast to get all that far. After playing the game myself, I fully get why she decided to stop bashing her head against these ethereal brick walls...

Transcient curse? I’m gonna get actual curse, and **** up all the ghosts

Garbage enemies, only for the fact that they have two attacks (where they slice with their right arm) that need different timings to roll, but they look the EXACT F****** SAME. I've studied the moves with extreme scrutiny. They have the SAME EXACT TELL. Don't even bother trying to dodge it skillfully. You literally have to guess. Better to position yourself so that your roll timing doesn't matter. Devs were lazy when they programmed this one.

Ghost lady: Able to move trough walls, able to attack trough walls, able to kill you trough walls, can't be hit under normal circumstances
Also Ghost lady: Able to block your path

They're weak to fire! A weakling in numbers is a weakling still.
transient curses are for pussies
we take that real curse and we like it

All of the encounters with these enemies feels cheap af. Attacking through walls, ambushes, and narrow walkways all add up to a any annoying experience. Regardless, I( will get through this and shove my halberd just their ghost asses.

Excuse me are wenot going to talk about these things sniping prowess? one nailed me with its basic attack from 30 feet away, despite the fact it looks like it only goes a foot in a half in front of it. bull*****bro

Upgraded Gargoyle Halberd, 2 handed R2 attack easily destroys swarming groups of these as it has 2 wide arc swings - rarely blocked by walls, which easily kill them. R1 attack had good range and can hit multiple in front of you in a tight spot between walls.

Black Knight Greataxe and Transient curse, ghosts are no issue, even in large groups, because of the arch of the 1 hand swing.

Im in NG+ and these jerks do 3x the damage when i'm using a heavier armor set that gives me 285 total defense as to opposed to NG where I had less than 100 defense. Seriously screw the wall gangbangs.

So there's no way to kill them unless I'm cursed or using a cursed weapon? Not even firebombs?
- Anonymous
Ghosts should have the ability to go through walls, I really like that. But at the same time there's nothing more annoying than getting hit through the walls or the floor by something you can't even hit back, because your weapon just bounces off
